  • Great value Mesh router, works better than expected - Detailed Review!
I wanted to give some detailed observations after using the MeshForce M3s set for a week now and playing with it thouroughly. I had studied the many options available and this just seemed to be the best value and best reviews. My house is fairly large (>5000 sq/ft) and since it is fairly new, it is fully wired for ethernet to a utility closet where I have Verizon FIOS @ 1GB speed. Lucky me... I work from home full-time and have over 30 devices connected, so things have to be very reliable for me. This was great and I worked wired and wifi for the entire week in my office without any issues. I was replacing a pair of Linksys EA8500 routers that I had wired together and worked OK, but I did not have true roaming which I really wanted. I had 2 SSIDs and had to play with some devices to pick the right SSID. I tried to use the same SSID for each, but this just did not work well, but I did use the same SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz and that was fine. Your Wifi devices *should* pick the fastest connection they can. I really wanted a true Mesh system and full roaming with just 1 SSID - I got that with the MeshForce. I connected the 3 units to ethernet at the farthest reaches of my house with 1 unit at the router itself where 1 of the Linksys routers was. I tried one unit on and off of wired/wifi by itself for a day and they still worked perfectly fine in both cases. Since this company is somewhat unknown, I wanted to know if I was getting a solid firewall. Very little mention of this in the reviews. This is important, but I tested cleaned, see below. I can't easily tell if there are any backdoors or other weaknesses in this thing, but guess I can live with this for now. ** First the cons: If you need a super highly configurable router with rich features, this is not for you. Stick with ASUS or one of the others that is better suited. Support is somewhat questionable, how do I do an RMA if needed? This is important. I can live with this, but it's a weak point until proven otherwise. The application is not terrible, but not great either, I can live with it. There is no way to control or reset your network while you are outside of it. MeshForce mentions remote control, but it's really just local control. Not what I'd call remote. There is no control from a web page, not the app is the only control method. The units seems very lightweight and cheap, but not an issue, they all have strong signal, sit on the shelf without the ugly and bulky antennas sticking up. Will blend in to most any decor. ** Now the pros - there are alot of these: Install was super easy, I was up and running on all units in 5-10 minutes. They just find each other and do their job. You can change the subnet, DNS, auto-restart times, port forwarding, and time limits, SSID name, all the basics - and this will work for most people. It's flexible enough. I switched to use OpenDNS and this was fine. I get very fast speeds from my iPhone and iPad in the vast majority of the house and good speed at the farthest reach and in the garage. Better than with the Linksys routers overall. Seamless roaming, so I was happy. I did not have to manually change anything. All devices connected without issue, they all show in the app. I reused 1 of my SSIDs and everything just connected quickly. Since I changed the subnet, I did have to reset a few devices to get them useable right away. You can tell which device is connected to which unit/node, so you can optimize placement easily, but you have to look per Wifi device to see what it is connected to, not per unit/node which a be more useful.a Roaming (and there is a setting for fast roaming, whatever that means) worked great, I do not notice any lag or dropsouts, or weak signal anywhere. Using Speedtest and my iPhone, I got 200-300MBs down and up in the vast majority of my house. I tested the firewall for any obvious weaknesses using ShieldsUp! (grc.com). The only issue was that external ping packets were responded to, but no open ports. You cannot change the "respond to ping" but I am that is OK with that. It was otherwise clean. Hope that helps, overall this is a great value and works well for me. So it should work well for most others, even if no ethernet connections between units. ... show more

  • Best upgrade for your home.
I live in a large, Five-bedroom two-story 3400 sq. ft home. I had been using a major brand 802.11ac dual-band router that claimed 2 frequency connections throughput. There is 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 3 iPads, 4 Phones, 5 google home devices, a WiFi enabled doorbell camera, 3 security camera, 4 streaming TVs and a printer on my WiFi network plus a Smarthings hub and two laptops that are connected by ethernet cable. Over All I have 55+ Wifi enable devices throughout my home. Connection on the smart TVs from the previous WiFi router has been acceptable although interrupted by the dreaded "Buffering" message more than I'd like, even with 300Mbps internet service from a major provider. Installation was very simple. There are three apparently identical mesh units provided; all have connections for WAN and LAN. I connected one of the unit to my cable modem then placed one unit on the front side of the house and another on the back side of the house. Using the "Mesh" app, I set the SSID and password. From ten feet away from the the base unit I consistently got 300+ Mbps. The remote units consistently yielded above 200Mbps and often over 300Mbs. Once installed, you can use the Mesh app to monitor the network. The Mesh app show the main screen with the three units (you can supply your own labels) displayed and the number of devices connected; (b) and (c) show the options in the app, and (d) shows the three units and the box the product comes in. The unit in the middle is rotated so you can see the three connections on the back (LAN, WAN, power, and a reset button). Pros: 1. Good solid WiFi coverage throughout my house. Devices are pretty much plug-and-play after configuring the SSID and password. 2. These units are very small, about 4" high, 3.5" wide, and 3.5" deep, so they will fit almost anywhere. There are some holes on the bottom apparently for hanging the unit on a wall but I didn't try that. 3. The units are fairly stylish and won't stand out if you need to place them in a visible location. There is only one LED on the front of the unit which is not particularly bright and wouldn't keep you awake if you put a unit in your bedroom. Cons: 1. Only one LAN jack on the base unit, so if you have a number of devices that are going to be hardwired (both of my desktops are wired in, and I have a SmartThings device plugged in as well) you will need an inexpensive network switch to accommodate the extra devices. Note, however, that each of the remote units also an ethernet connection, so you could use that if you connect devices without WiFi. 2. You are limited to WPA/WPA2 (TKIP) security; no WPA2 (AES) or WPA3 is available. Hopefully this will be fixed sometime in a firmware upgrade? Summary: Very good WiFi coverage is provided throughout the house. As mentioned earlier, the system is pretty much plug-and-play and will certainly app eal to users who simply want a WiFi system that is easy to setup and works reliably. All in all, this has been a good upgrade for my home. ... show more
