  • The "Architect" Starter Kit (That Won’t Hurt Your Feet!) IYKYK
If you have a toddler who lives to "Hulk smash" everything in sight, these Melissa & Doug Jumbo Blocks are about to be your new best friend. I was a little worried about having giant blocks taking up the living room, but honestly, they’ve become the centerpiece of every playdate. The best part? They’re made of extra-thick cardboard, so when your kid inevitably builds a tower six feet tall and knocks it over, it doesn't sound like a construction site collapsing—and nobody gets a bruise. They are surprisingly sturdy, too; my little one has definitely sat on them and used them as "stepping stones," and they haven't crushed yet. You get 40 blocks in three different sizes, so they can build anything from a castle wall to a very questionable-looking "dinosaur cave." They do come flat, so be prepared for a bit of a folding marathon to get them all set up (maybe put on a podcast while you do it), but once they’re together, they’re solid. If you want a toy that actually encourages some serious "big hands on" play and keeps them busy for hours, these are a total classic. Just a heads-up: your living room will look like a construction zone, but at least it’s a fun one! ... show more

  • Good quality. Lots of blocks.
I worried when I purchased these that they might be flimsy, difficult to assemble, or cheaply made with too many yellow blocks. After a few months with them, I can safely say that they've exceeded my expectations. They do require assembly, but they all fit together in the same fashion. The first two or three might take you a while to figure out, but once you have the pattern down, you can move really quickly. The first blocks might have taken me 5 minutes each to put together, but then I was doing them all in 2 minutes or less each (all sizes - all colors...they're all really the same basic folding design). These are strong, and solid. The coloring on them holds up well. They stack well and are solid cardboard. This means your kid can stack them up and knock them down as much as they want and they'll stand up to the play. There are fewer red bricks than blue or yellow, but that wasn't an issue for us. Kids aren't architects, they just to stack stuff and knock it over...and it doesn't matter which blocks I use to do that - it's still fun for them. This container has 40 blocks in it. That's more than enough. When you've got a dozen or so folded up, they take up a lot of space, so you just keep the rest for replacements. However, it has been a few months and none are worn out or broken. Now that I've got a daughter who's approaching the age to play with these, I'll be using the existing blocks and those left unfolded still will be used for her enjoyment. High quality. Fun to play with. Will probably last longer than your child's interest in them. ... show more

  • LOVE these blocks!
Given some of the negative reviews, I was a little worried about these cardboard blocks, but decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did. My 26-month-old son LOVES them and they are so great for imaginative play. "Build-a-house?" he asks me. These blocks are quite durable. We made a pile of them at the bottom of his slide for him to barrel through (hysterical, if you haven't tried it) and they haven't shown the slightest bit of wear yet. He steps all over them, stands on them, and falls off of them but they don't cave or collapse inward. We have built huge towers and brought them crashing down and they still look great. Some people complained about not having enough blocks, but these were plenty for us. Maybe as my son gets older, we'll need more, but at 26 months, 40 blocks is more than enough. Another complaint people had was the assembly of these blocks - I don't get what was so bad about it. My husband and I folded them one night while watching an episode of Friends - it only took 20 minutes with two people to do all of them, and it wasn't difficult at all. After the first one, you get the hang of how to fold them and then it's easy. I'm also surprised at how many people complained they weren't aware they had to assemble them; I would imagine that more toys DO require assembly than DON'T. If you've ever put together Little Tykes Cozy Coupe, you are a seasoned veteran indeed and these blocks are an absolute cakewalk. I'll be buying this toy again and again as my friends' children turn two because of the HOURS of fun, creative play they bring to kids. Definitely worth the price for me and I have zero complaints about this product. It beats the heck out of the loud, obnoxious toys shown on every commercial! ... show more

  • Excellent quality boxes, but includes too many small boxes.
These brought back some childhood memories, some of which I prefer to keep buried: Build a Super Mario Bros. castle, only to have my brother destroy it and laugh. Design and build my very own house, only to have my brother destroy it and laugh. Build a staircase for my action figures, only to have my brother destroy it and laugh. "Insert anything I ever built", only to have my brother destroy it and laugh. However, my 5 year old son loves to use wood and boxes to build a "house", so we thought this would be an excellent gift for him. And we were right, he used them first to build a wall to stop his siblings from leaving the living room. I decided not to invite my brother to this party, given past experiences. The boxes are excellent quality. The kids stood on them with no creasing or collapsing. Folding the boxes looked a whole lot more confusing than it actually was. It took about 4 minutes for the first one, then once the concept sunk in, it took 20 second each. We are disappointed that the set included so many of the small, yellow rectangle boxes. They are quite small and do not offer a lot of function by themselves but all together they are useful. We wish the set had more of the larger red boxes. Those are the kind that my broth.. nevermind. ... show more

  • Creativity for the whole family Creativity for the whole family
My boys have had so much fun with these blocks over the years, especially between the ages of 2-7. Their favorite activities with these oversized blocks were creating tunnels and forts/barriers to be broken through like pictured below. Our whole family also enjoyed having nerf battles and we would hide behind the brick wall for defense. They are sturdy and durable. We have had these around 5 years. You do have to construct them yourself when you first get them. However, once I got the hang of it, it didn’t take too long. The blocks can be difficult to store once play is over. I found a big trash bag is the easy, quick way to store them until next time! ... show more

  • Great toy for my 18 month old grandson
The Melissa & Doug Jumbo Cardboard Blocks was a hit with my 18 month old grandson. The colors pop (red, blue, yellow) and the three sizes (small, medium and large) are just right. It took a while to fold and assemble the blocks, but once you got the hang of it the process went fast. Kids love to stack them then knock them down (over and over again). My own kids had a set or two and they were a big hit 35 years ago as well. The Melissa and Doug blocks appear to be built just as solid as the original blocks my kids used. My expectations are these blocks will last a long time and provide many years of fun for my grandson and his buddies (and me.). I highly recommend this toy if you are looking for something that is NOT electronic and gives the ability to play along with your child. ... show more

  • Great toy
First, these blocks are durable. I bought these for my oldest daughter. They ended up going through three children. There are still a few block around the house. I use them as spacers, to keep the couch from banging against the wall. Second, these blocks are fun. My kids built forts, and walls, and roads, and more. As simple as they are, they were used a lot. One of the favorite games was for Dad to build a tower that reached all the way to the ceiling. Then it was time for the "earthquake" (complete with Daddy sound effects and child giggles) that had the tower tumbling down to the floor. Third, these blocks are trouble free. If the kids want to stand on them, don't worry -- they won't be damaged. If the kids build tall structures, don't worry -- they won't hurt anybody. If the kids want to chew them, don't worry, they're safe for that also. I thought the blocks were a nice toy, but my eyes were opened this Christmas. The daughter I bought these for left home, got married, and had a baby. (That's a nice order of things, but I won't claim the blocks helped with that part of here development!) This was the baby's first Christmas. It turns out we had a minor fight over who would get to give the new baby these blocks as a Christmas present! (My youngest daughter won.) You simply can't get a better review than that. ... show more

  • Build a tower!
My 2.5 yr old son loves these bricks. They required a bit of assembly, but once you get the hang of the construction they can be put together quickly. My 16 month old daughter loves to build up a few bricks on her own and knock down her brother's hard work as well. The bricks are easy to stack and fit together well for easy storage in a small space - no odd corners or mismeasured sizes. We've had these for a few months and the bricks are all still intact and in good shape even though my kids stand on them, repeatedly try to see how hard they can knock over towers to see how far the bricks fly. The number of bricks really isn't enough to build a big structure other than a decently tall tower or medium sized wall. For the price, I only bought one set, but a second set would really allow more building. ... show more
