If you have a toddler who lives to "Hulk smash" everything in sight, these Melissa & Doug Jumbo Blocks are about to be your new best friend. I was a little worried about having giant blocks taking up the living room, but honestly, they’ve become the centerpiece of every playdate. The best part? They’re made of extra-thick cardboard, so when your kid inevitably builds a tower six feet tall and knocks it over, it doesn't sound like a construction site collapsing—and nobody gets a bruise. They are surprisingly sturdy, too; my little one has definitely sat on them and used them as "stepping stones," and they haven't crushed yet. You get 40 blocks in three different sizes, so they can build anything from a castle wall to a very questionable-looking "dinosaur cave." They do come flat, so be prepared for a bit of a folding marathon to get them all set up (maybe put on a podcast while you do it), but once they’re together, they’re solid. If you want a toy that actually encourages some serious "big hands on" play and keeps them busy for hours, these are a total classic. Given some of the negative reviews, I was a little worried about these cardboard blocks, but decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did. My 26-month-old son LOVES them and they are so great for imaginative play. "Build-a-house?" he asks me. These blocks are quite durable. We made a pile of them at the bottom of his slide for him to barrel through (hysterical, if you haven't tried it) and they haven't shown the slightest bit of wear yet. He steps all over them, stands on them, and falls off of them but they don't cave or collapse inward. We have built huge towers and brought them crashing down and they still look great. Some people complained about not having enough blocks, but these were plenty for us. Maybe as my son gets older, we'll need more, but at 26 months, 40 blocks is more than enough. Another complaint people had was the assembly of these blocks - I don't get what was so bad about it. My husband and I folded them one night while watching an episode of Friends - it only took 20 minutes with two people to do all of them, and it wasn't difficult at all. After the first one, you get the hang of how to fold them and then it's easy. I'm also surprised at how many people complained they weren't aware they had to assemble them; I would imagine that more toys DO require assembly than DON'T. If you've ever put together Little Tykes Cozy Coupe, you are a seasoned veteran indeed and these blocks are an absolute cakewalk. I'll be buying this toy again and again as my friends' children turn two because of the HOURS of fun, creative play they bring to kids. Definitely worth the price for me and I have zero complaints about this product. It beats the heck out of the loud, obnoxious toys shown on every commercial! ... show more

My boys have had so much fun with these blocks over the years, especially between the ages of 2-7. Their favorite activities with these oversized blocks were creating tunnels and forts/barriers to be broken through like pictured below. Our whole family also enjoyed having nerf battles and we would hide behind the brick wall for defense. They are sturdy and durable. We have had these around 5 years. You do have to construct them yourself when you first get them. However, once I got the hang of it, it didn’t take too long. The blocks can be difficult to store once play is over. I found a big trash bag is the easy, quick way to store them until next time! ... show more

    • Excellent fun toy for the money
The blocks are exactly what I was hoping for: Large, light-weight so the kids don't kill one another toppling towers bigger than themselves, and absolutely fun in their utter simplicity. The blocks were easy to assemble. Two of us did it in about 15 minutes. Once you get the hang of it, it's kind of fun, especially with the kids eagerly awaiting the next block. My kids love to build everything from 5-foot towers to tables and chairs for their dolls. They mix and match with their regular blocks for added texture and sounds effects upon destruction. If I had to list drawbacks, the biggest is that while the blocks are well enough reinforced to handle a bit of weight (the kid standing on the red block in the photo, for example), the sharp edges of the other blocks put some serious dings into the cardboard when the blocks topple onto one another. I could see these dings leading to destruction of the blocks over time. Our blocks began to get dinged up within the first five minutes of use, and it's not like the girls were unusually rough with them. Too, consider storage. An assembled set of 40 can consume an entire toy box (luckily we happened to have a spare). Lastly, I wish there were more jumbo blocks (the red and blue), and less of the yellow. Overall, none of this detracts from the well-executed purpose of the set. I believe it will last just as long as the kids need it to, and if it doesn't, at this price we'll just throw the beat up ones in the recycle bin and buy another set. ... show more

    • Good quality. Lots of blocks.
I worried when I purchased these that they might be flimsy, difficult to assemble, or cheaply made with too many yellow blocks. After a few months with them, I can safely say that they've exceeded my expectations. They do require assembly, but they all fit together in the same fashion. The first two or three might take you a while to figure out, but once you have the pattern down, you can move really quickly. The first blocks might have taken me 5 minutes each to put together, but then I was doing them all in 2 minutes or less each (all sizes - all colors...they're all really the same basic folding design). These are strong, and solid. The coloring on them holds up well. They stack well and are solid cardboard. This means your kid can stack them up and knock them down as much as they want and they'll stand up to the play. There are fewer red bricks than blue or yellow, but that wasn't an issue for us. Kids aren't architects, they just to stack stuff and knock it over...and it doesn't matter which blocks I use to do that - it's still fun for them. This container has 40 blocks in it. That's more than enough. When you've got a dozen or so folded up, they take up a lot of space, so you just keep the rest for replacements. However, it has been a few months and none are worn out or broken. Now that I've got a daughter who's approaching the age to play with these, I'll be using the existing blocks and those left unfolded still will be used for her enjoyment. High quality. Fun to play with. Will probably last longer than your child's interest in them. ... show more

    • Every child needs blocks.
If you google block playing you will find a ton of articles about how important playing with blocks is to a child's development. So, we wanted to have blocks in the children's room at the library. We love these cardboard blocks because children can play with them without making noise, and won't get hurt if one is thrown--kids do have library tantrums sometimes. There are 8 large red bricks, 8 medium size blue bricks, and 24 small yellow bricks. The children do play with all of the sizes. We actually have two sets for group play. I might prefer more of the larger bricks, but the variety is definitely good--wouldn't want ALL large bricks. They come flat. An adult has to fold them, which is not at all difficult; I didn't even read the instructions. One reviewer said his children crushed them in just a few hours. I can only think that their bricks were not put together correctly. Our library kids stand on them all the time, and they are still in perfect shape. One thing I don't like about them is that Melissa & Doug put their name and phone number on every block. That's just cheesy to me. If you keep them stacked up neatly, they don't take up much space--and the kids are pretty good about keeping them neat because stacking them up against the wall is kind of fun. They even seem to feel compelled to sort them by color. Also bought these for my niece and nephew, and they work out well at home, too.     • Great addition to our toy room, lots of practical learning applications for the little ones
These are great. Easy for 1 or 2 parents to team up and construct quickly, they stay contsructed even when stood on by my toddler. There are 40 blocks (as the package says), we thought that would not be enough and almost ordered two sets, but let me tell you, you can build quite a few things with 40 blocks, and they take up a lot of room. Being an engineer myself, I appreciate the proportions of each size block match the other blocks, i.e. 1 red block is as wide as 2 blue, and 4 yellows. This makes building quick and fun structures much better, and more stable as the blocks leave minimal gaps. My son loves to build with these on his own, but loves when I build a super tall tower (~7 feet-ish) before letting him run through it seeing it all crash down. There's actually quite a bit of learning that a kiddo can get from some simple blocks. I'd get these again in a heartbeat. ... show more

    • Great toy for my 18 month old grandson
The Melissa & Doug Jumbo Cardboard Blocks was a hit with my 18 month old grandson. The colors pop (red, blue, yellow) and the three sizes (small, medium and large) are just right. It took a while to fold and assemble the blocks, but once you got the hang of it the process went fast. Kids love to stack them then knock them down (over and over again). My own kids had a set or two and they were a big hit 35 years ago as well. The Melissa and Doug blocks appear to be built just as solid as the original blocks my kids used. My expectations are these blocks will last a long time and provide many years of fun for my grandson and his buddies (and me.). I highly recommend this toy if you are looking for something that is NOT electronic and gives the ability to play along with your child. ... show more
