For the pizza oven, each piece needs to be about 5" long and about an inch wide. With the ring guard, the hammer never hits the blade or my hand. I'm using live oak, which is fairly hard, so I keep a file nearby to sharpen the edge from time to time. It came with mounting bolts, so I affixed it to a stump.
