It’s not horrible, but it’s difficult to change directions far from smooth. When you want to go down it jumps about 3 inches until you get it moving then it works ok. Not really good for fine movements

Works exactly as it should. Had me fooled a bit when it didn't have any ratchet clicking under no-load but I guess this is normal because it was working fine. They list it as a come along as well as lifting so you should probably not expect any clicking until you take up the slack and it gets under load when using as a come along. Test lifted a few items and it worked like a champ. You can let things down just as easy as when you pick it up. Has a neutral setting on the latch so you can feed the chain back and forth to set your load. Lift handle spins all the way around if your load allows to speed up the lift and also ratchets up and down which lifts very, very slowly. You can also spin the knob on the ratchet handle to take up the slack instead of pulling on the chain. This chain hoist is excellent in every way. The only negative, and it's not related to the build, is that this unit is only rated for 3/4 ton. My cable come along is rated for a couple of tons and is much lighter to transport. So mostly this is a lift item. For come along use, I'll stick with the cable one. Highly recommended.
