I haven't used a chain hoist since I was a kid. This one work smoother than the ones that I used way back then. I bought the 1 ton unit with 20' of chain. That's a LOT of chain. I forgot how slowly these things run. It's about a 30 to 1 ratio I think, so you'll be pulling about 600' on the control chain to raise the load 20'. That gets old fast, but this doesn't require AC power and it's pretty easy to move. Another thing to keep in mind is that the lift chain is almost drippy oily with black oil. That's probably why it's so smooth. But it'll get black oil stain on anything it touches, and as it lifts the chain comes down on your load, so watch that. Some folks seem to have trouble with it being jammed on delivery. It comes fully extended on delivery, or at least mine did. So the little tiny chain loop on the end should get bigger as the chain is pulled back up. Slowly work the control chain until you get it moving the right way, and do not expect this to work properly in any position except vertical. They need the weight of the chain to keep the gears engaged. They ALL work like this, and have for the 30+ maybe 100+ years that people having been using this type of hoist. ... show more

I bought this hoist to lift cemetery stone for a team restoring Civil War era grave markers. It moves slow and doesn't require shifting from RAISE to LOWER like a come-along.
