Description

The 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 5" Random Orbit Sander (model XOB01Z, tool only) delivers increased efficiency and mobility to woodworkers. The XOB01Z features three speed settings, superior ergonomics and up to 40 minutes of run time on a single charge (battery sold separately). Match the speed to the application with three speed settings (7, 000/9, 500/11, 000 OPM), which are easily changed with a one-touch electronic control switch. The large 1/8" random orbit action is engineered for efficient sanding, fast material removal, and a swirl-free finish. The pad brake reduces free-spin for improved overall finish, and a control system regulates pad speed at start-up. The XOB01Z uses quick-change 5" (8-hole) hook-and-loop abrasive paper for increased versatility.

  • Cordless!! Great tool
Uses 8 hole hook and loop 5” disks. I find them to be the most common type available at local hardware stores. The sander is powerful and has a large orbital oscillation pattern of ⅛” (3mm). Having 3 speeds is nice but it can feel like it’s slow even on the fastest setting. It’s moving a little slower than most corded sanders but the sandpaper will still cut fast with the large orbital pattern. In fact, I use higher grit in this sander than I do in faster corded sanders. The hook and loop pad is very flat on mine. The very flat pad and the slower orbital oscilation can make higher grit sanding pads grab your base material more and the sander can feel a little difficult to control if using much pressure. I’ve found using light pressure gives me the most control and even using two hands with light pressure works really well for control. Even with the slightly different technique from my corded sander I find this Makita to be very useful and surprisingly good. It runs very quiet for a sander and even though it sounds slow, it is efficient and cuts fast. I use it with a cordless vac and the dust collection is great. I usually remove the dust bag from the dust port adapter and my vac hose fits in the bag’s place. I temporarily tape the hose in place. I do think I will buy Makita’s hose adapter for their sanders to use with this one. The dust bag does a good job but as with any sander indoors, it will get dust everywhere without a vacuum dust collector. I hope this review is helpful. ... show more

  • Works great - eats batteries for lunch
I’ve been very happy with the performance overall. The dust vacuum is quite a bit more effective than I had expected at keeping sanding dust to a minimum and in terms of sanding power it does exactly what you’d expect. It flies through those batteries though - I have several Makita tools since I’m already in their battery system - and most of my tools can get quite a bit of use on a single battery charge. I frequently drain both of my batteries when using this tool for any length of time - sanding a dresser for example. I almost wish I had opted for corded except that I also use this outside sometimes and it’s way more convenient to use the battery based one. ... show more

  • Great sander, not too buzzy in my bones. Get 3Ah batteries.
Great sander. Gets the job done on a 3Ah battery, you can almost fully charge another 3Ah battery as fast as this will use one up at full speed. Doesn’t shake your hand and arm bones to death, even without any gloves on - it’s actually not unpleasant to use. Just guide it around your surface - the sandpaper doesn’t get hot if you don’t press on it and just let it do the work. I got perfect sanding results with almost no experience using an electric sander, just stepping up through 4 or 5 grades of paper (I used Serious Grit brand, it’s nice but probably any 8-hole paper is fine). It’s not too heavy, and high speed is plenty of power for the pine and mesquite that I’ve done so far. The little bag is a joke. I left it off and can see dust blowing out at speed from the tube, so it must have a fan in there pulling the dust through the 8 holes and out the exhaust. I ordered a universal vacuum fitting set that hopefully fits this to the basic shop vac I have, but it’s surprisingly good by itself (though makes a mess of course). Once the battery gets down to 1 bar, it will start to lose some top speed. I found it to be somewhat less effective when this happens, so I go ahead with battery swap to keep it running near full speed. 2Ah will get some sanding done, but it runs down faster than you want it to. 3 is good, lasts longer than I expected at full speed. ... show more

  • Good battery operated tools are handy, not cars, wake up
Works good, it shouldn't leave me stranded

  • Super handy sander
I already have a big investment in Makita LXT tools and batteries, so this was a no-brained. I had been using a corded random orbit sander, but it unfortunately died on me. I switched to this one and it is great. Just as much power as the corded ones, and it has a really long runtime with a 5AH battery. It runs longer than it takes to recharge the battery, so you can run it forever with just two batteries. My only complaint is how tall it is. To fix this would require a significant redesign due to the need for the battery to fit SOMEwhere. Oh also, the dust output is a weird small port that doesn’t fit my standard size hose like the old corded Porter Cable that I was using before, so that was a bit frustrating. Still, I love this thing and expect to get a lot of use out of it going forward. I don’t see any need to go back to a corded option. And while I normally always do have a vacuum connected to my sander, meaning it might seem pointless to have the sander be cordless, it is much nicer to only worry about ONE thing attached than two. One final note—since I couldn’t get a good deal on the smaller dust extractor port with my existing vacuum adapter, I can’t speak to the quality of dust collection. With the poor fit, it did not capture dust very well at all, but it is likely that will change greatly once I find an appropriate vacuum hose adapter. ... show more
