I was a bit skeptical given this 3hp diesel engine was so cheap, but it arrived and after purging and priming the high pressure fuel pump (normal to do). the engine started right up. I'm using the engine to drive an alternator and the estimated load on the engine is approximately 2.5 HP. The engine seems to handle the load no problem. Make no mistake, this is a diesel engine and its a bit noisy and seems to vibrate more than a gasoline engine of the same size. Overall its a good value for the money.     • It came early. Five days early.
No, I have not put it to work yet. I was impressed with the shipping crate. I've gotten things "Made in China" in the past, and the shipping crate almost survived shipping. It took a little time to figure out how to get into this crate without destroying it. And the engine appeared to be in excellent condition, until I pulled the rope. The cooling shroud was bent in against the cooling fins on the flywheel. Yet the recoil was completely undamaged, indicating the shroud was bent in before the recoil was mounted on it. Very minor repair to the shroud and the engine turns freely. Getting it started is quite another matter. At one time or another, most people have started a lawn mower. No, that does not prepare you for this. You have to pull the rope like you're mad at it, trying to break the rope. The first time it got over top dead center during compression, it fired I didn't run it long, but it sounded good. Further instructions tell you to run it at reduced load for the first twenty hours at reduced load. The "break in" period. Not unusual, since all new engines require a break-in period that varies from one engine to the next. But where many of them may be run at no load, this one must have a partial load. I'm still working on that before it gets put to real use. It's turning into an interesting project, but not disappointed. In fact, I'm considering a ten horsepower one for the next project. ... show more
