  • All Owners that are having any sort of connectivity trouble or hardware issues with stability, please read!!!!!!
Ok, I was in the same boat as many other negative reviewers here. I couldn't get the Smart WIFI Web Based Setup to work, then the router started to loop and then it would randomly reset/reboot on its own. Now, I am not a network tech or even in IT but I do know my way around most electronic devices. These symptoms that others had written about were the same that I was now experiencing with this brand new router. Heck, I couldn't even make it to the setup page to try and update the firmware because of the hardware resetting/rebooting every 10-45 seconds. Stepping back for just a moment, this reminded me of a 12v audio/computer installation that experienced similar problems/behavior. Our 12v in car PC would have instability and random reboots/random hardware failures. After many hours testing each component in the setup as well as checking each wire in the custom harness, a ROOKIE, yes a ROOKIE got his multimeter out and tested the source power (where the harness was hooked to the battery/distribution box) and the destination connections (where the harness lead into the car PC) and as it turns out, the voltage was below 10V, causing us to realize that we used the wrong gauge wire. We essentially used the bare minimum wire for the installation and whenever the in car PC would have a load on it (cold boot), the voltage would drop just enough to cause issues. We beefed up the power line considerably and all was well after that. Why the heck do I write a router review that includes a story about a 12v car PC? Cause the same problem is here: The Linksys label on the bottom of the router calls for a 12v 2a power supply. I checked the power supply that this NEW router came with and low and behold, the darn thing is rated for 12v 0.5a. This router will NEVER work properly without the correct power supply. I got a power supply from my LED strip parts bin that was rated for 12v 3.0a and plugged it in (same barrel connector). The router immediately came online, downloaded its updated firmware immediately and went online within 1 minute. I have only had this router for two hours since the power supply was corrected and I have had NO issues as of yet. To all of the folks that still have this router and are having any intermittent connectivity issues or having setup issues, check the power supply label and see if it is 12v 2.0a or higher. If it is not, replace it and hopefully that will solve your issues. Keep in mind that you may need to complete a factory reset with the new power supply and go through the setup process (as noted in the forums and manuals). If your router still is NOT working after correcting the power supply and redoing the factory reset & setup, then you may truly have a defective unit. ... show more

  • Not what I was hoping for. But it works at least.
I've always stuck with Linksys products even if they haven't been the greatest. I dunno why, loyalty I guess.. After my WRT160N finally went out for the last time I decided to go with this for an upgrade to my existing network. I was hoping having the dual band and AC speed might solve some of my wifi issues I had been having with the WRT160N. Out of the box this item looks great. It isn't overly large, looks pretty sleek. I elected to get a unit with the antenna this time for the boost to signal strength so those sticking up was to be expected. Set up was overly simple and completely different than what I had been accustomed to. I'll have to be honest, I don't know how I feel about Smart Wi-Fi yet, it feels sort of wrong being able to access my router settings from Linksys website no matter where I am, but it's done and we'll see where it takes me. Immediately all of my devices connected across both bands and it seemed to have a stronger signal even out in my garage so I am happy for the increased coverage. I started running some speedtests to see where I was and was disappointed to see that all devices connected to this router were topping out at 6MBps. I unplugged from the network and went straight into my modem and saw the speeds increase to 19M close to the 20M speed I was expecting. I tried again, rebooting the device, checking for updates, checking from both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz band, but I can't seem to get any device, whether it is a laptop, desktop, phone, etc. to get a faster wifi connection to the net. Not to be deterred I continued on with this limitation. I connected a 500GB external USB Hard Drive to the router to test the networking capabilities of that. Everything worked like a charm except the transfer speed was still limited even to this device. I have been unable to write or read from the device at more than 6M, even though USB 2.0 should be able to handle 60M. Obviously this 'throttling' is getting annoying at this point. Next up I actually used the device for a few days. After day 1 my connection to the internet was lost once while I was home and using the network, I had to reboot the device. Since then it has been about two weeks and that has only happened 1 other time. The network had come back up, but just wouldn't connect to the internet. I have also seen when the connection dropped but it did connect back to the internet within a minute. Not such a big deal, a minor annoyance... I've also found that now for some reason one of my laptops will not connect to my wireless laser printer. Every other device connects just fine, desktops, laptops, phones, etc. and all can print as normal. However this one laptop no longer will see the printer. Quite annoying because it is my wife's laptop and you can imagine how annoying she can be about it when she can't print her coupons and needs to use my computer. Yep. Eventually I started to notice some issues with the external USB Hard Drive as well. I would try to connect to it from my computer to add files and it wouldn't detect as a storage device. It would get locked into some mode where it appeared as an mp3 player, or a network device, but I had no access to read/write to it. I would have to reboot the router to get it going again as unplugging the Hard Drive and plugging it back in, or powering cycling it wouldn't have any effect. I also downloaded the Smart Wi-Fi app for my android device to give that a shot. I am completely underwhelmed by it as you really have no access to do anything from the app other than just look at what is connected, or verify that the router is connected to the internet. Oh, and you can turn on your guest network... which I guess is convenient, though I likely won't use that as it isn't often (ok never have) my guests use anything other their phones and they have their own data signals for that. The speedtest button doesn't work on Android and is annoying because you really want it to work. I most likely won't ever open it again. All that being said... at least it works. My WRT160N had stopped connecting to the internet period so this was a much needed replacement. I will probably start looking for a new solution though, most likely after the holidays as I'll need to watch spending until after that, and I don't want to return it and have nothing at all. Overall, I'm disappointed I can't give this a 5 star review because I was really hoping this would be an awesome device and solve all my problems, as such it barely squeaks by as passable and I'll probably start considering other brands from here on out. Edit 8/12/16: At this point I'm still rating it a 3 star. I did resolve my throttling issue finally when I swapped out my N adapter for an AC adapter. I never did get the HD issue resolved so I just unplugged it. It still reboots randomly, and I think I narrowed down the printer issue but it's still an issue. I was able to get it to print from all devices finally, but the router would boot the printer off the network after 10 minutes when the printer goes into standby, so I would have to reboot the printer anytime I wanted to print anything. Now however, the router refuses to connect to the printer at all, so I ended up having to move it by my desktop and plug it in via USB and reinstall the printer on all the other computers by network share which means I'm SOL for phone and cloud printing. ... show more
