Top Amazon Reviews

  • Great performance but app could be improved
Size: WIFI 5
This review is based on a 2-story 2,300 square foot house with Gigabit internet service. I replaced a 5th generation Apple Airport Extreme Wireless N router with a 2-node Velop system, running firmware version 1.1.2.181801, released June 19, 2017. The Apple Airport Extreme worked very well with 50mbps internet service, but after upgrading to gigabit service, I also decided to upgrade the WiFi for both better speed and coverage. As you’ll see from the speed results below, the Velop really delivered on that end. PERFORMANCE Once the service was upgraded to gigabit, I decided to test both the existing Airport Extreme (“N” Wifi) as well as the new Velop (“AC” Wifi) in both 1-node and 2-node configurations. While I tested on speedtest, FAST, and dslreports, I’m only reporting speediest results for simplicity. FAST posted similar results to speedtest, and dslreports results were generally a little slower. All tests were conducted using a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 15, MacOS Sierra, using Safari without any add-ins. You may get better/worse speeds depending on your equipment. Speeds shown are mbps. Test 1 - Same room as our Internet connection, with the access point about 10 feet from the laptop: Airport Extreme: 2ms ping, 218 down; 292 up. Velop Base (node 1): 3ms ping; 462 down; 428 up Test 2 - Same floor as our Internet connection, but at the extreme end of the house, thru a few walls): Airport Extreme: 2ms ping, 25 down; 44 up. Velop Base (node 1): 5ms ping; 119 down; 33 up Test 3 - On floor below our internet connection: Airport Extreme: 3ms ping, 55 down; 39 up. Velop Base (node 1 only): 3ms ping; 228 down; 51 up Velop with Node 2 installed on this floor, WiFi backhaul: 5ms ping; 333 down; 189 up Test 4 - On floor below our internet connection, extreme catty-corner to the access point: Airport Extreme: 3ms ping, 78 down; 113 up. Velop Base (node 1 only): 3ms ping; 229 down; 142 up Velop with Node 2 installed on this floor, WiFi backhaul: 6ms ping; 322 down; 126 up As you can see, the Velop significantly increased speeds in every scenario. In test 1, this is most certainly due to moving from WiFi N to WiFi AC. In test 2, we can see the signal strength and ‘beam forming’ ability of the Velop help it handily beat the old Airport Extreme. In tests 3 and 4, adding a Velop node on that floor improved speeds from just having one Velop node serving the whole house. However, even with one node for the entire house, the speeds were still significantly higher than the old Wifi N router. On the other hand, I think the Airport Extreme 5th Generation would have continued to serve us well if we kept our 50mbps service or even upgraded to 100mbps. Qualitatively, the WiFi performance throughout the house, garage, and yard were noticeably better with the Velop 2-node system. Everything was more responsive; videos loaded much faster, etc. COMPARED TO OTHER MESH SYSTEMS: Prior to getting the Velop, I had tried Google Wifi, as it provided 3 nodes for a lower price. While the setup app for Google Wifi was awesome, there is a compatibility issue with our ISP that caused me to return it to Amazon. (It doesn’t support bridge mode without disabling mesh functionality). Nevertheless, I think the Velop would have outperformed Google Wifi in tests 3 and 4 given the Velop’s dedicated wireless backhaul vs. Google’s shared bandwidth. On the other hand, based on published reviews, I think the Netgear Orbi would have performed even better than the Velop, but I went with Velop because it was aesthetically less obtrusive than the Orbi, and had a price advantage. OTHER OBSERVATIONS OF VELOP The setup was quite slow. One issue is that the app asks you to look for a blinking purple LED, which to my eyes looked like magenta/pink, leading me to think there was an issue with the product. In addition, the app itself is very slow to start up, which makes logging in to check on the Velop status somewhat irritating. Also irritating -- the use of small point, low contrast fonts in the app. During my tests, I also ran into a bug which caused Node 2 to not connect with Node 1. For my tests, I initially only set up the first node to do all my speed tests. During setup, the node upgraded its firmware. When I tried to add Node 2, it wouldn’t connect to Node 1, even after I performed a hard reset on Node 2. I ended up disconnecting Node 1, plugging in Node 2 as the main node so that it would upgrade its firmware, then reset it. This allowed Node 2 to connect with Node 1 for the mesh functionality. Hopefully Linksys fixes this in a future firmware update. Overall, this was a great upgrade to our Wifi to make better use of our gigabit service and to improve the Wifi signal quality on the property. ... show more

  • Incredible speed, easy to set up
Size: WIFI 5
I have always needed two WiFi hubs to cover my small city condo because of the old brick and plaster walls, and dozens of nearby condos all with their own WiFi to cause interference. With older WiFi setups I could never get bridging to work, so I had two separate WiFi networks and would have to switch my phone, laptop or iPad as I moved from one room to the other. Pain in the neck! My parents upgraded their large ranch house to use 3 of these LinkSys mesh devices and it works so well I decided to try it. I can't believe how much better it is than everything I tried before! I finally have a single seamless WiFi network, so no switching between the two SSID's any more. That alone would have been enough to justify the upgrade. But the speed is also incredible. I have a fast cable modem, but the old WiFi system was a bottleneck so I had to use Ethernet cabling to get higher speeds. With this LinkSys mesh I get 200-400 Mbps download speeds everywhere in the condo! No more Ethernet cables. I'm very happy. ... show more

  • Performance A+++, Ease of Install A+, Customization C
Size: WIFI 5
30 hours with the Velop. This is surely a mixed review, and one which Linksys could EASILY make an A+, 5-star across the board. I have had a number of wireless routers, APs, and extenders. 2 story home - a LOT of devices, most recently- Uverse router located on one end of second story, connected via cat 5 to AP on other side of 2nd story, delivered strong signals to each end of the house, but handoff's were iffy, and in the middle of the home, sometimes a gap of coverage. Replaced this with Velop - turning off Uverse routing, placing one Velop node at Uverse router, and one on other side of house, and DID NOT Use the CAT 5 15-year old wiring. WOW. 20 minute simple install, and the coverage is consistently strong and fast everywhere in the home. The ease of setup was amazing, and Velop after determining the type of Uverse router, setup the Velop network quickly and reliably. This is the kind of easy network setup that I would recommend to anyone who doesn't understand networks, even my parents. And especially if they have had issues with home wireless in the past. But Customization.. Linksys has chosen to bury this under the covers... even a simple task of changing the DNS servers. If you are trying to provide some limits on the worst of the internet, you might want to use a limited DNS service, like OpenDNS Family Shield. To me, it should be a no-brainer for Linksys and every other manufacturer to let you point and click to using various DNS services, Open DNS, Family Shield, Google DNS, or yout provider's DNS. The Velop DOES allow you to change the DNS, in the same way you would most any other router, but getting to that customization is hidden. There are some ways you can dig in forums to do it, but I chose to call Linksys, late on a Sunday night, and had a great experience (seriously) with the Velop support (a 24-hour dedicated tech team)- and she was prepared to even remote desktop to help me change the DNS, but upon determining my comfort/knowledge level, she just guided me to the customization screen. Now I have full access to change the main settings whenever I want to, but it did take a call. This could have been done easier, without the call though, with going through a series of warnings and consents to let me there without involving tech support. the Velop App on the mobile device could even allow me to set checkpoints/config points and let me roll back changes that did "break my internet", and such functionality would be easy to do. Last point is the family features of the Velop. I think at the most basic for the routers should be to just use an alternate DNS. For any novice, that isn't an easy experience, but one that could be plug and play. It isn't something that you can do from the Velop App, and surely isn't plug and play. Velop allows you to block internet to devices, or to block access up to 10 sites. Seriously, 10 sites. And out of the box, I have to do that on my mobile device, not from a PC. Out of the box there is also no logging of where devices have gone. And out of the box, I can't easily see how to set up access times or to limit times for devices. These are all features which i expected to have in Velop by the description. So surely this is a mixed review. I had multiple reasons for wanting the Velop and for it's features. For performance, the main reason, the two node completely solved issues I have had for years for the couple dozen devices spread across my house, and it solved that in minutes and very easily. For ease of setup, awesome, A+. But in customization and family features, it is customizable- but hard to get to. It is similar to customizing I have seen in other good routers, but it could be easier and more accessible. And I don't think it is delivering on the family features it is promising. It may very well in the coming weeks and months, it upgrades easily, perhaps it was just rushed to market to meet the Orbi and Google devices. ... show more
