  • Much better than Genie's remote access box
I have a Genie Accelerator garage door opener, and while the opener has been great, the remote access box that comes with it has a major flaw. The lid falls off every time you open it! Since I know it has a problem, I could get it open without having it fall off, but you have to be very careful. I got tired of coming home and seeing the lid haphazardly placed on top of the box, so I tried to beef up the hinge. I put in screws and washers to make it so the lid would not pop off easily. The only thing this did for me was the next person that used that box flipped the lid all the way up, and completely broke off the hinge portion that is on the box... So now there was no way that I could put the lid back on it. Genie's design is fundamentally bad... I am a mechanical design engineer, and the Genie P.O.S. is like something designed by a high school senior with no experience. It completely sucks. The Liftmaster has a nice slide up door that is a very decent design. I don't think it will ever have a problem. If I was going to knock the design, it would be for the keypad. There is no separate button to open or close the door, you hit the zero button after the code... Which is fine if your code ends in zero, but if it doesn't then people can be confused... They key in 1,2,3,4 and then stand there wondering why the door doesn't go up... So I just told everyone that the code is new and the last number is zero, and voila, no problems reported by anyone. Also, there are two different codes for Genie intellicode doors, one that is 315 Mhz and one that is 390 Mhz... No indication from Genie anywhere on what the frequency is of their opener... Not on the opener or on their remotes... So I had to program the thing twice, and the second one I tried worked... It's been a couple of weeks, and it has worked flawlessly every time... It looks to be a durable, rugged design and I expect to have no more problems with my remote access keypad! Highly recomend this one! ... show more

  • Tips for Purchasers - especially for Genie Openers
My old Genie keypad mounted outside my home stopped lighting up so it was difficult to use at night. This Chamberlain Liftmaster replacement works but there are several quirks to installing it to operate a Genie Intellitouch Garage Door Opener. Unfortunatley the Genie keypads are no longer manufactured and if you find a used one it will be quite expensive. 1. You must have the door closed and be inside the garage (so you can get up on a ladder and open up the front compartment pf the opener, containing the light bulbs) in order to set up the Chamberlain keypad. 2. The Genie Opener "learn" button is an unlabeled push button to the left of the left lightbulb in the front compartment of the Genie Opener (on mine there are two Phillips head screws (one on each side of the white front compartment) holding the front compartment. 3. In the instructions that come with the Chamberlain keypad there are two choices, 5, and 6 for two different groups of Genie openers - mine was 6, so try that first. 4. The keypad I received had the sliding cover on so tight that I had to pry it with a screwdriver to get it to slide down. You can try WD-40 but I followed another tip, to tape a small piece of cardboard at the top of the inside of the sliding cover to keep it from sticking. 5. Yes, as someone else pointed out, after the programming, in order to mount the keypad, one must both take off the sliding cover and take off the separate battery compartment cover (which screws on with a tiny screw) to find the holes to put the mounting screws through. 6. Unlike the Genie keypad the Chamberlain keypad does not light up when you push up the sliding cover, but does light up when you touch a key. Also, unlike the Genie Keypad, the Chamberlain keypad does not have a send button to hit after punching in a four digit code. Instead you punch in a four digit code plus the Zero, 0, key in order to open or close the garage door. ... show more

  • Works great with my Genie openers--easy to configure
I bought the Liftmaster 387 LM to replace my slightly cheaper but intermittently operable Skylink S89 universal remote keypads. (“Intermittently” is the key word – I don’t want to go out for a walk, and return to find myself locked out!) The Liftmaster keypad, though a few dollars more expensive, appears to be much better made. My GDOs are both 12-DIP switch circa 1995 Genie Promax PMX75 openers. Reading through the reviews, there seemed to be some confusion whether the 387 LM would work in this application. I was happy to find that it works beautifully with these older Genie units. And where it takes needle nose pliers to remove jumper plugs, and a tiny screwdriver to set the frequency for the Skylink remote, I was able to program the 387 LM effortlessly, sitting in the car, by entering the command sequence from the keypad. The old Skylink remote keypad also worked initially but began to fail – particularly as the weather got colder. Hopefully my new Liftmaster 387 LM keypad will be found faithful – and reliable! Differences (Liftmaster vs Skylink) -------------------------------------------- Battery: 9-volt vs. 2-CR2032’s Configure with: keypad vs. DIP switch, slide switch, jumper, and keypad! PIN entry: Terminate PIN with ‘0’ vs. ‘#’ PIN entry feedback: none vs. audible beep Another positive difference with the Liftmaster 387 is that the keypad remains active (and illuminated) for a little over 10 seconds after the door begins to move. During that time, any key can be pressed to reverse door travel – similar to the original Genie keypad behavior. ... show more
