NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A TIME MUST-READ BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the iconic internationally bestselling author of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy: A forbidden affair erupts volcanically amid a decadent tropical wedding in this outrageous comedy of manners. A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK: The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, CNN, Lit Hub, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Reader's Digest, BookRiot, SheReads, PureWow, Publishers Weekly "Imagine Crazy Rich Asians mated with Saltburn and you've got Lies and Weddings—a heavenly summertime read!"—Plum Sykes, New York Times best-selling author of Bergdorf Blondes Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a problem: the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister’s wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who’s-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money. Should he marry Solène de Courcy, a French hotel heiress with honey blond tresses and a royal bloodline? Should he pursue Martha Dung, the tattooed venture capital genius who passes out billions like lollipops? Or should he follow his heart, betray his family, squander his legacy, and finally confess his love to the literal girl next door, the humble daughter of a doctor, Eden Tong? When a volcanic eruption burns through the nuptials and a hot mic exposes a secret tryst, the Gresham family plans—and their reputation—go up in flames. Can the once-great dukedom rise from the ashes? Or will a secret tragedy, hidden for two decades, reveal a shocking twist? In a globetrotting tale that takes us from the black sand beaches of Hawaii to the skies of Marrakech, from the glitzy bachelor pads of Los Angeles to the inner sanctums of England’s oldest family estates, Kevin Kwan unfurls a juicy, hilarious, sophisticated and thrillingly plotted story of love, money, murder, sex, and the lies we tell about them all. • a lot
This book is a lot to get through. It took me three attempts of starting and giving up before I actually read it. It is a really good read once you get into it. There are a lot of characters and it required a bit more concentration on my part to keep everything together. I found the ending was predictable ... show more

  • Three Star
It was really slow in the beginning and there was really no solid story till the last few chapters. It took me a very long time to finish this book unlike Crazy Rich Asians and all Kevin's books prior to this one. Overall, it is ok. But I won't recommend it either. It is not a "must read" type of book. ... show more

  • fun, unique
This was a great story, with multiple characters- spanning generations. It was a fun take on marriage for money but full of heart.

  • Always entertaining!
I love Kevin Kwan books. The characters are so clever and the opulence is just entertaining. I love to imagine all of the fancy places Eden went to. The descriptions were mesmerizing. It was so fun to travel from Hawaii to London, LA and Venice. I’d like to imagine being one of the people who enjoys the secret places only known by the Uber rich. I would have given it a 5 but some of the social lecturing took a bit away. Other than It was such a fun read. I highly recommend if you are looking for an entertaining light read. If you like Kevin Kwans other books you will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Thoughtful romp!
Humorous and captivating story! Revealing money isn’t everything but it can make things more fun! Wouldn’t it be a trip if all the billionaires donated all their billions to ways to make the planet and all the peoples better off?

  • Just as fun as a you’d expect a Kevin Kwan to be. The perfect beach read.
You know there will be fabulous couture, jewels, food and locations. You know there will be heros, heroines, and an amazing glamorous villain(s). And you pretty much know how it’s going to end. So the point of one of Kwan’s books is the twists and turns of the journey and this one has his bigger twist yet. The only drawback is that, we know that Eden is fully aware of how ridiculous the people who surround her are, and how their lifestyle is a reflection of the overwhelming wealth gap we have in this country. We know this because she mentions it multiple times. And yet no one else cares and life goes on in their little 0.1 bubble. Maybe this, and the sub story of racism toward and in Asian communities is Kwan’s way of beginning to bring some balance to his fabulous tales if excess. Which are, don’t get me wrong, so much fun to read. But even fun books can give a nod to social responsibility. If these are baby steps, keep it up, Kevin. ... show more

  • It’s not Leo Tolstoy…
Okay, Kevin Kwan is not Leo Tolstoy, and “Lies and Weddings” is NOT “War and Peace”. But, then again, who is and what is? Kevin Kwan is the author of four previously published novels, set in Singapore and London/Paris and other interesting waterholes for the insanely rich. His first book, “Crazy Rich Asians” was made into a fun movie that has done extremely well financially over the years. The producers of the movie seem unable to put together the succeeding movies-from-books in Kwan’s series. Covid, actors’ commitments, financial problems, writers’ quarrels over money and billing seem to have slowed the pace to a crawl to any sequel(s) to “Asians”. There shouldn’t be many problems with the future filmings of “Lies and Weddings” because the book looks ready-made for production. I’ve long thought that weddings (and funerals, maybe) are the best settings for novels. You have love, bridezilllas, money issues, and a whole lot of emotional anguish. Kwan’s book seems written specifically for transfer to the big screen. His characters are mostly wealthy- either insanely or merely extremely - and seem only to wear “designer clothes”. They live and vacation in the trendiest places. They’re not you and me and that’s what’s fun about Kevin Kwan’s writing. So, is “Lies and Weddings” a great book? No, but it is well-written for its intended audience. It’s a short, fun book which anyone who enjoyed Kevin Kwan’s back list should enjoy. And the inevitable movie. ... show more
