• 4 Stars
Yikes!!!! This 4 Star domestic thriller was so darn uncomfortable to read, why could I NOT put it down? SUMMARY Rose Gold spent her childhood as the victim of her abusive mother. Patty, her mother, had Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome and spent sixteen years starving and poisoning Rose Gold. By the time Rose Gold finally figured out what was happening, she had a feeding tube, a wheelchair, her hair was shaved and her teeth were destroyed from vomiting constantly. She had been home schooled, separated from her peers, taught only what Patty thought she needed to know, so sheltered from the outside world that she became extremely socially awkward. When Rose Gold was sixteen years old, after confiding in her internet boyfriend, she realized that Patty was poisoning her and Patty was arrested. The book skips back and forth between present day, when Patty was released from prison and to the previous five years, when she was sent to prison and Rose Gold was left to sort out her life. Upon her release, Rose Gold offered Patty the opportunity to live with RG and her little baby Adam. But when Patty arrived at RG's new house, she has a surprise waiting for her. Prior to her arrest, Patty was kind of a big deal in their small Illinois town. She was known as the single mother of a constantly ill child, the "strong woman" who had put her life on hold to care full time for that sick child. She was well known for maintaining a sense of humor and for constantly fighting for her daughter. But now that they all knew what she did, the whole town was against her. Not only that, but RG happened to live in the last house Patty ever wanted to set foot in. Was it possible that RG was not genuine in her attempt to reconcile with her mother? WHAT I LOVED There was so much to love. For one thing, I love unreliable narrators and this book has two of them!! Patty was a real piece of work. She not only was unrepentant for the years of poisoning RG, she actually wanted RG to thank her for all the time she dedicated to taking care of RG while RG was sick. But Patty, you were the one who caused the illnesses! She tried to convince everyone that she was falsely accused but no one was buying it. Her version of the story was soooo different than RG's version. I almost doubted RG. There were so many times that I literally wanted to jump into the pages of the book and stop either Patty or RG from making a big misstep!! I think that is the sign of a good book, when you become emotionally involved and want to stop the characters from making things worse for themselves. Then you have to stop yourself and remember it's just a book. The ending has already been written and you will not be able to change it. The book is so three dimensional. The reader sees so many different version of the same truths. It's easy to sympathize with most of the characters, even when they do the wrong thing. WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE Having an infant in a house with a person who is most likely unstable and potentially abusive was hard to stomach. Then, you begin to wonder if the second adult in the house is stable or not, it was hard to take and a large part of what made the book so uncomfortable. OVERALL Such a good book but so many uncomfortable moments!! ... show more

 • 💕💕FOUR STARS💕💕
“That’s what separates the sane from the not: knowing madness is an option but declining to choose it.” - Darling Rose Gold. SYNOPSIS: For the first eighteen years of her life, Rose Gold Watts believed she was seriously ill. She was allergic to everything, used a wheelchair and practically lived at the hospital. Neighbors did all they could, holding fundraisers and offering shoulders to cry on, but no matter how many doctors, tests, or surgeries, no one could figure out what was wrong with Rose Gold. Turns out her mom, Patty Watts, was just a really good liar. After serving five years in prison, Patty gets out with nowhere to go and begs her daughter to take her in. The entire community is shocked when Rose Gold says yes. Patty insists all she wants is to reconcile their differences. She says she's forgiven Rose Gold for turning her in and testifying against her. But Rose Gold knows her mother. Patty Watts always settles a score. Unfortunately for Patty, Rose Gold is no longer her weak little darling... And she's waited such a long time for her mother to come home. REVIEW: Wow, this book is crazy versus crazier. The whole book was a ride, and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. I enjoyed the entirety of the plot, and think that this book is very different than any other book I have read before. Even different then other books I have read that deal with Munchausen’s disorder. I love how the author used this detail, and really built on it throughout the book, weaving it through the narrative. I rated this book four stars because I was able to predict a lot of the twists. Even so, I thought they were well done and made the story that much darker. I also thought that there were a few holes here and there in the ending, but if you suspend your belief a little bit then it doesn’t matter as much. I did enjoy the ending though, and felt that the way it ended added to the suspense. Both the main characters (Rose Gold and Patty) were each dark, manipulative, secretive, and vengeful. They are two unique characters that you can definitely tell are related and share some unsavory characteristics. I found them both to be really interesting, and was glad that the story was told from both of their perspectives. However, I do wish that we would have gotten more flashbacks from Patty’s perspective when Rose Gold was younger, I think that could have taken the reader further into her mind, and how she really perceived things. Overall, this story was great and I would recommend it. It is an easy read, and I got through this book fairly quick. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author in the future. ... show more

 • Good but Disturbing
The book is about Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which I’ve always found intriguing. Many shows/books give us a glimpses(Sixth Sense), but I’ve never read a deep dive into the hows and whys. Darling Rose Gold delivers! The book alternates POVs between Patty (mom) and Rose Gold (daughter), giving you the perspective of both the abuser and the abused. It’s an in-depth look into their twisted thoughts and motivations. But…which narrator can you trust or do they both have nuggets of truth? Wrobel writes both perspectives very believably. The book is disturbing and I absolutely couldn’t put it down! I did not “like” or relate to (thankfully) either of the characters but I’m pretty sure this was the author’s intention. In the end, I contemplated who was the worse of the two... the mother or the daughter (hint... they are both incredibly messed up so it’s impossible to tell). While the subject matter is heavy, the reading is quick and easy. The reason I gave it four stars (rather than five stars) is the ending comes a bit abruptly. The story ends with a bang but when I figured out what was happening I wanted more! In sum, I recommend to everyone who can handle the subject matter! ... show more
