Description

Waves! I’m back with another review. This time I did a buddy read with my book club, Books & Broomsticks. Title: The Love Wager Author: Lynn Painter Narrators: Kristen DiMercurio and Zachary Webber Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐+ Where should I begin? From the very start, this book is engaging and fast-paced. The initial scene was fantastic, immediately grabbing my attention and providing a strong introduction to the main characters. Beyond its excellent writing, this book deserves praise for its developmental edits because every scene and chapter served a purpose. For me, the most compelling aspect of Lynn Painter’s writing is how she masterfully crafts narratives that resonate deeply with readers. She writes and presents her characters with a notable lack of pretension. What you see is what you get. It’s as if she’s sharing her real-life adventures and natural comedic talent around a campfire, creating stories that are both deeply funny and profoundly moving. We have a dual POV from two accomplished professionals who, though successful in their careers, share a profound, desperate longing for love. The storyline subtly incorporates elements of past trauma without overpowering the narrative. This is what brings Hallie and Jack together and keeps them circling each other's orbits with no off-ramp. But you know what? We all crave deeper bonds, and being best friends is sometimes the first step. It would be a disservice not to mention the superb narration delivered by Kristen DiMercurio and Zachary Webber. Libby offers the audiobook, and it’s a worthwhile listen. Finally, I want to talk about the spice. Now, admittedly, I usually skip the spice. I appreciate a slow burn with grand gestures, but the author’s execution of this aspect of the story was superb. I really valued how well-written it was and how the plot remained coherent without the spice dominating the narrative. So, I’ve got a book hangover! Seriously, if you enjoy characters with real substance, top-tier banter, many laugh-out-loud moments, and a truly amazing ending without a cliffhanger, then The Love Wager is the book for you. Dare I say this had all the best tropes? This was a swoony and hysterical read that followed Hallie and Jack’s wager on who can find someone and fall in love first. My thoughts 💭 -Surprise I loved it. Hallie was so funny and I want to be her bestie irl and Jack kept up with her goofiness and was such an endearing character -Just all around cuteness that’ll make you swoon and laugh and love love -The banter is top notch and had me cackling , if there’s one thing about Lynn painter it’s that she makes me lol -I hope they make this into a movie bc that end scene in the rain 🌧️ BYE it was so perfect -This is book 2 in a series of interconnected stand alones. The first book is Mr. Wrong Number. You don’t have to read them in order but as per usual I’d recommend it! - The only thing that threw me with this one was like…why weren’t they together? I devoured this book and I adore Hallie and Jack. First of all, the banter was everything. I laughed out loud multiple times and had a smile on my face so much of the time. I liked that Hallie has her stuff together and that it was clear from the beginning that Jack was attracted to her. I’ve been on a roll of books with heroines that either had self esteem issues or were being discounted in some way, so it was refreshing to see these two interact without some subtext that the heroine should be thanking her lucky stars that the hot hero was paying attention to her. I also love how Hallie was so unapologetically herself. It was refreshing, and she’s hilarious. Jack was funny in his own right, but he was the Dean Martin to Hallie’s Jerry Lewis. Hallie and Jack’s story felt very real as it progressed from attraction, to friendship, to more, while never losing the friendship. My favorite thing in rom-coms is when the intimacy is established even without sex; when it’s there because of closeness, familiarity, and because the hero/heroine genuinely like being around each other and have fun interactions. The way everything played out made sense. Yes, they could’ve communicated sooner as they started realizing their feelings, but it made sense why they didn’t. It wasn’t a forced lack of communication to move the story along, as happens so many times in rom-coms; it was a genuine desire to be careful because they were becoming best friends and didn’t want to ruin that. I also liked that the potential conflict was always there, and was addressed, but wasn’t unnecessarily drawn out. Sensitivity warning: Open door romance (though it doesn’t come into play until later in the book and it’s not an overwhelming amount of scenes) and pervasive language (including heavy use of f-bombs and sexual innuendo).

3.5 ⭐️ I enjoyed this book for the most part: the banter was good and the relationship build up was slow and steady. Honestly if it had not been for the third act breakup I think the rating would have been higher. The sequence of events in the last 100 pages was very strange to me and not the most enjoyable but everything leading up to it I liked! Hallie and Jack each had their own annoying qualities but their friendship and banter was fun to read.

Read if you enjoy: - Friends to Lovers - Online dating - Dual POV - Fake Dating - Forced Proximity - Lots of LOL moments What a cute romcom! This sequel to Mr. Wrong Number (Still my favorite of the two!) did not disappoint. Although it is the second installment, you can easily reads this book as a stand-alone and will completely enjoy it. This book had such a great combination of character build-up, spice and drama! The main characters were very likable and had me laughing-out-loud so many times. Loved the fake-dating towards the last portion of the book and how each let their feelings flourish under said "faking" acts. Very enjoyable and leaves you with a happy feeling in the end. Highly recommended!

3.5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Tropes - one bed - one night stand - fake dating - jealous MMC - dual POV This book was the second to me wrong number and was very cute but also boring like it was the same thing happening over and over again in a different font but nonetheless some moments were very cute. !!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!! I love that liv got Jack a dating app and I love their sibling dynamic it was way too cute. Another thing I loved was Jack being jealous of Alex and he even went as far to cancel their reservations and show up for her even when he wasn’t asked to and what’s makes it better is that these were Olivia’s plans to help him win back Hallie. What I didn’t like was how Hallie never actually told Ruthie she wanted to move out and how it basically ended on a cliffhanger like what does Jack get for Christmas it could’ve at least been in a bonus misc. on Lynn’s website. other then that the book wasn’t terrible so read at your own discretion.

📖 RomCom ⭐4.5/5 🌶️ 🌶️ (multiple open door scenes but nothing explicit) ➡ Hallie Piper is fun, ambitious and outspoken but a year after her long term boyfriend left her heartbroken, she still hasn't meandered back onto the dating scene. Feeling eternally lonely since his favorite uncle passed away and his little sister got engaged to his best friend, Jack finds himself rushing toward forever with the wrong woman. When a misunderstanding brings them together for a night that ends in Hallie sneaking out of Jack's hotel room braless the next morning, they both think they've seen the last of each other. To their surprise, they reconnect weeks after their run in through a dating app they've both committed to trying in hopes of finding the one. They strike up a bet and a friendship to see who can find lasting love first- but when their dates continue to end in disaster, they start to realize their friendship may be turning into something more. ◾ 🎯 What I loved: This was such an easy, fun read. It was a great friends to lovers trope without excessive pining- something I find most books with the trope have too much of. Both Hallie and Jack were smart, driven individuals on their own that brought out the best in each other. Their banter was top notch and I thought it was fun that their relationship was sandwiched between two weddings. The Love Wager wasn't emotionally stressful- it marketed as a fun RomCom and totally delivered.
