At first, I thought the value of the little button on the underside of the tape measure was more a redundancy. I've used dozens of tapes -- digital, laser assisted, and old-school slice your fingers if you let the tape reel in full-speed kinds -- and until this one came along my favorite was a milwaukee tape simply for the large numbers and that the metal ruler was exposed on the underside so you could easily hold a dimension without having to slide a lever that eventually fails because the parts wear out. But boy was I missing the point! Today, I was cutting some flooring on my chop saw. I drew the tape out a bit past my dimension, started to mark my line, and I noticed the tape didn't start to recoil. I hadn't employed the thumb lock, so I was expecting the case to slowly slide along in some sort of coefficient of friction to spring tension. But the tape didn't budge. I completely let go, making the universal "hands up when time's up" gesture you see on every cooking or crafting competition. It didn't budge. I picked up the tape housing, the hook end still engaged, drew out a few more inches, and set the case back down. Did the hands up gesture again. Didn't budge. I slid the material the tape was resting on and the whole thing moved as one unit. No sneaky case sliding because the thumb lock was only kinda engaged. Its like this thing was glued to my board. Eureka! The button is depressed simply by placing the tape measure on a flat surface and letting gravity do what it does. That redundant button on the bottom of the tape case is now may favorite shop addition and I've got one of those Shaper Origin CNC Routers (and that's pretty cool!). Even if you don't NEED a new tape, I highly recommend this one. It stays in place with zero effort, has clear labels in eight inch increments (which I find helpful, 'cuz I can't tell you how many times I've had to hit something like 11/32), has metric units of the under side, its reasonably priced ... on a per item basis. Anyway, I'm super glad I got this one. Now I better quit yackin'. I've got some flooring to do.

I love the tapes ability to mease ID’s accurately and easily. It’s always hard to get a good inside dimension accurately. Doing a shower and need to get it right. Thx I recommend this tape. Laser works good. I dropped it in the water and I got it to work. But had to take it completely apart two or three times before it worked again. So be careful.

First the good news. It's kind of cool having a laser with a tape measure. This is useful for inside measurements where you don't want to calculate the additional length that the body adds to your measurement. Now the bad news. The tape has some downsides compared with wider, dedicated construction tapes. The lines are thinner and the 1/4 and 1/8's markings are not as prominent as on other tape measures. Not a big deal for occasional use, but it gets old if you use it a lot. I end up using my other tape measures because they are easier to read and more consistent. I sometimes am off by 1/16 using this tape due to the reading. To be fair, a lot of measuring tapes sold now are more difficult to read than many of the standard construction tapes made by Stanley, Lufkin, and others. Also, this probably only matters to someone who uses a tape a lot and appreciates the extra visual clarity. The tape used here is also thinner, or maybe uses different materials that typical construction tape, and so can deform if you don't use it gently. I put a kink in mine just by allowing the tape to spin back from several feet. One other limitation is that the laser only measures the outside dimension. It'd be more useful if it measured either inside or outside dimension. If it measured inside dimension, then you wouldn't have to rely so much on reading the tape. But, this is obvious from the description so you know you are getting it this way. One other nit is the lock feature. It's a soft lock, allowing you to pull more tape out even when it's locked. This is a feature that is different Some people may like it. I don't. If you don't like the tape, you should contact customer service. They provided me with a 16 ft replacement that I like, one that doesn't have a laser and uses a better, wider, and easier to read tape with good standout. If you are a heavy user, I'd recommend getting a good tape and laser separately. I prefer Lexivon's wider tapes without the laser. They seem like they could take more abuse than this laser tape.
