UPDATE: After 2 years the level wind pin ground down. Called Lew's customer support. After no more that 2 minutes, a new pin was sent to me. All she asked for was my address, and actually knew what the part was; no detailed explanation, no RMA, no warranty BS, no sales pitch, no nonsense. Would have been happy to pay for the part too, didn't even come up. How often does that happen nowadays? Ya got me, Lew. No need to look for another brand for any inshore products. ORIGINAL REVIEW: This is exactly the same reel as the Abu Garcia BlueMAX, with Lew's branding on it (the Lew's has a brass main gear, can't remember if Abu did but I think it was plastic, otherwise it's identical). I lost my BlueMAX combo in San Diego Bay :-( .I heard good things about Lew's rod and reels, so I purchased this, was not entirely disappointed to see that it was exactly the same reel, since I already know how to work with that reel. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, you have to understand for this price you are getting lots of plastic gears inside. After a little use, the reel will not wind noiselessly, if that's a problem for you, spend more money on a reel with all metal gearing, a lot more money. All said, it works just fine, I like the rod better than the Abu Garcia Rod. I target sand bass, small bonito, and other smallish fish in the bays around San Diego and this combo is a very good low budget choice, I fish from a standup paddleboard so in many cases my rods and reels got completely drenched with salt water, therefore I don't really want something that expensive. Also, since losing my last Rod, I have wised up and made a DIY leash with weed whacker string using instructions I found on YouTube. Subtracting one star because Lew's does not make their schematics available on their website, since I already have the schematic for the AbuGarcia I should be fine assuming it's exactly the same. I don't know if Lew's will give you schematics if you contact them, from their website it seems that they direct people toward sending reels in for repair rather than repairing it themselves. All I want to do is periodic maintenance myself, I will update this review if I do end up contacting them. UPDATE: I really like the rod, maybe more than the reel! Ultra sensitive and extremely light, just enough action for the plastic jigs I usually use without being too stiff, a lot better than I recall the Abu being. The reel itself is fine, I love the almost weightlessnses of these fiberglass bodied reels, wouldnt want to try to drag in a big bat ray but for the bass and small bonito I go after this is a very comfortable, useful setup. The brakes work very predictably and no issues with the button or handle getting too "sticky" due to salt water, I do rinse and oil the reel after use. Lew's did send schematics within 48 hours of when I emailed them, so for the price and service I'll up it to 5 stars.

Ordered for Christmas 2019. Lews rod and reel bait casting combo arrived. When gift was opened by my son the tip of rod was already broken off. No sign of tip was in plastic wrap or box that rod was in ...leading to believe is was broken prior to being shipped. Growing up I have never had a problem with the tip of rod breaking so easily. As I read other reviews this is a common problem not just with this rod but others as well.

Great product. Very smooth. Very light weight. I only took off 1 star for ease-of-use. If you’re used to baitcast reels it is great. But definitely not for a beginner learning how to use one.

This is my 2nd baitcaster and it seems ok. Shipping isn't done the best and when it arrived it had a bent eye. Not a huge deal but sometimes care about the product shows. I got used to fine and for the money is a good combo.

This is a great setup to start out with, I've had it for more than a year. I've caught lots of fish on it with no problems. The only thing bad that happened to it is a lag in the drag, it would stay loose even if i tightened it. But after messing with it it has been back to normal and works fine. I would get this again just so i can use it as a Texas rig setup.

Can’t really add a review sense the combo arrived missing 7 inches of the pole thanks to ups. On the other hand the reel was pretty smooth tho. Fits the hand nicely.

nice rod and reel rod is nice and firm during transist the reel handle was bent . Had to take handle off of reel and put handle in a vise to straighten it. good to go. will try it out next week.

The rod is great I absolutely love it there's nothing I wish was different on it. I have caught many bass on this rod many exceeding 7 pounds and I even saltwater fish it. I have caught 3 tarpon on it lots of big barracudas, snook, jacks and I accidentally caught a 5 foot alligator On it. And It has handled them all amazingly the guides are not micro but damn near it the reel fits perfect in my hand and even all my friends want one its deffenetly an amazing buy and for the price you cannot beat it.
