I proudly have the worst fishing channel on YouTube "George Does Stuff". While it may be terrible I love fishing!! I am also cheap!! This little rig is SUPER cheap! The rod is everything you expect with an Ugly Stik. Inexpensive, wiggly and tough as nails!! I really enjoy the fact that it's a two piece so it's easy to throw in your vehicle and have a rig ready to go whenever! I will say I do NOT like the reel. It's good for a beginner but I upgraded mine to a Shimano Sienna (500) which is a very smooth reel for $30. The kit comes with some great stuff for creek fishing. Highly recommend!!!     • The rod: Fantastic. The reel: Not so much.
The Ugly Stik is a fantastic, strong rod that's very hard to break. It's responsive and easy to use. This would be 5 stars if not for the reel in the combo, which simply wasn't good. Maybe I got a lemon, I usually like Shakespeare's mid-tier reels but this one backlashed once and after fixing that the next fish popped the reel. I've not had that happen before, the top came off, the bottom of the assembly snapped, and I brought the fish in hand-over-hand. It was just under 2lbs, a nice little white bass. But still... a 2lb fish utterly destroyed the reel. If you can snag this for under $20, the rod alone is worth it. The rod is absolutely wonderful to use and I can't recommend it enough for the majority of freshwater fishing. ... show more

Ugly Stik is a no non-sense economy brand with great quality for a low cost. I had another Ugly Stik (GX2) that I eventually lost parts for, but wish I still had - it was my first rod and the best all around rod I've ever had. Anyway, in looking to replace it I find the GX2 is mostly sold out and instead came across this 7' Saltwater Ugly Stik rod/reel combo for $40. I'm looking to get into surf casting and fishing off piers so I needed a bigger rod anyway. This one is great for the price - medium heavy, pre-spooled with 14lb mono, comes with a few bits of tackle. The rod telescopes at the base near the top of the handle by about 1' so its a bit more convenient to transport intact. I haven't used it yet so can't comment on casting or durability, but it bends at the tip like a medium heavy rod should and seems decent. Others have said the reel is poorly made, but I'm prepared to replace it if need be - I'd have paid $40 for the rod alone! ... show more
