  • Good quality, simple to setup/use (w/ WiFi) at a great price point
Size: 16A-NEMA 6-20 Plug J1772 (For All Other EVs) Color: Black
Quick and easy WiFi setup using Smart Life app, works great at L2 charging at 16A on a dedicated 240V 20A GFCI circuit (for home use) and the 120 adapter is nice to have for portable use at 120V.

  • 3.6 kW max power (15 amps), easy to use, includes brackets.
Size: 16A-NEMA 6-20 Plug J1772 (For All Other EVs) Color: Black
The media could not be loaded. This EVSE has a SAE J1772 (the standard level 1/2 charging inlet for all non-tesla EVs) car charging "gun" and a NEMA 6-20 plug. It comes with a NEMA 5-15 to 6-20 adapter so you can plug it into any standard 120 volt household outlet. It comes with a wall bracket for both the main body of the EVSE, as well as a "plug in" J1772 with a cord wrapping hook, so you can screw the brackets to a wall and have a fully fixed EVSE, or you can pull the unit out of the (slip in) bracket to take it with you as a travel EVSE. When plugged into a 120volt source, it supports 8, 10, 12, and 15 amps. When plugged into a 240 volt circuit (NEMA 6-20) it supports 8, 10, 13 and 16 amp charging levels. It also has a timer button where you can set it to start charging from 1-12 hours in the future (typically used to charge overnight when you have less expensive electricity available). In addition to the simple amp control and charging delay timer that you can control via the two front panel buttons, you can install the "Smart Life - Smart Living" app by Volcano Technology and it allows you to set start and stop times for charging, which you could use to limit the total amount of charging. (95% of the functionality can be accessed with the two buttons on the front panel, so installing the app is semi-optional, but it does give you realtime views of the voltage and current going through the EVSE). The amp limiting worked perfectly, and at 120 volts a current meter always showed slightly lower amp draw than the setting. In my testing on a 240 volt circuit, the maximum draw I observed was 15 amps (3,600 watts, or 3.6 kW) even though the display said it was delivering 3.7 kw. Note: If you plug into a standard household 15 amp circuit, the 12 amp setting is the right one to use (12 amps is 80% of 15 amps, the maximum rated allowable continuous draw, only use the 15/16 amp setting if you are on a 20 amp circuit). When powered by a 240 volt outlet, this charger provides a solid 3.6 kw of charging (43 kWh over a 12 hour period), which is plenty to fully re-charge most EV's overnight. With a 120 volt outlet at 12 amps, it can deliver 17 kWh over a 12 hour overnight charge, which is enough travel distance for most people's average daily driving. I charged my car at 3.6 kW for an hour and then looked at it with a thermal camera, and the temperature of the J1772 gun, wire, and EVSE were very acceptable for continuous use. It claims to have a 25' cord, but the length of the cord between the J1772 "gun" and the body of the EVSE is only 24 feet (But you do get another 18-24 inches of "reach" if you include the length of the J1772 gun, the EVSE body, and the 18" power plug cord. The unit is a little heavy to "hang" from an outlet, so you should probably plan on installing the included wall mounting bracket to provide strain relief. Overall, it is a very functional unit that gets very close to meeting its specifications. (3.6kW vs 3.7kW max power, 24' vs 25' cable length) At this price point it is a good value for a universal voltage 15 amp EVSE. ... show more

  • Lots of cool features - a really great EV chargin solution.
Size: 16A-NEMA 6-20 Plug J1772 (For All Other EVs) Color: Black
Since purchasing our 2023 Nissan Ariya a year ago, I have acquired a few of these. One reason is because, early on, I was a bit paranoid and had “range anxiety.” The other was because I didn’t want to just rely on the OEM charger, and I wanted to have a charger at home, one in the car, one as an emergency spare, and at least 1 other at a location I frequent. As such, I’ve been able to evaluate different features to figure out what I like and what I don’t like. This charger checks a lot of boxes for me. One of the things that I really like about this is the app. The Ariya doesn’t provide a lot of charging details other than approximate time to full. I prefer to know more, so that I can better estimate range and charging times. The app provides all of this information and then some. Obviously, it doesn’t know the capacity of the car’s battery or how much charging time is left, but it does tell the power levels, including volts, amps, and Kwh. (It also tells you the unit’s temperature (so you can monitor for overheating. Another cool feature of the app is that it allows you to change the amperage remotely. I have found this to be an unexpectedly handy feature. Finally, it keeps a log of charging times and power used by date. The second thing I like about this is the ability to adjust the amps being delivered, including being able to turn up the level 1 (110v/120v) charging to 16 amps. Now, you should check with a qualified electrician before playing with this feature. For example, it’s generally and widely recommended that a circuit’s constant load never exceeds 80% of its total capacity. The circuit going out to my garage is a 20amp circuit. This means that (for me), I can dial the charger up to deliver 16amps (as long as I don’t have anything else drawing power from the circuit). This may not seem like much, but it does have an impact on miles/precent per hour of charge. It’s not level 2 by any means, but it’s still roughly 33% more than the usual 12amp level 1 charging. This brings me to the 2 things that I don’t really like about the charger (and they are minor). The first is that the cable that goes from the charger to the plug is remarkably short. It works better if your outlets are oriented with the ground facing up. Where I live, we have ground facing down. This was easily solved by getting a quality, short extension cord. The second thing is that the cable is a bit thinner than the OEM cable. I wish it were thicker, especially if it’s going to facilitate level 2 charging. Still, I keep my cable elevated and out of the way, so it’s not an issue for me. Overall, having used all of its features for the past several days, I have to say that this is easily my favorite charger. I’ve even switched to using this instead of the OEM charger for my “permanent” at-home charger. We’ll see how it does as we move into winter (we get very cold winters), but for the moment, this has exceeded my expectations. ... show more
