  • Overall Love It and Minor User Irritations
Style: 10.1" | QHD | Projector
This is my first android device, so I’m not sure how much is android versus IOS versus this tablet. It took a bit of learning to adapt to slightly different ways to do things. I’ve been using it exclusively for 3 weeks. Home button is a software circle that appears on bottom on the tablet when you swipe up. This is good because it allows for a larger viewing area. I don’t like it because advertisers strategically place ads where the home button is that are the same color. Sometimes I accidentally hit an ad, rather than the intended home button, annoying. Next to the home button is a triangle that brings you to the open apps, so you can use or close them fast, very nice. To the left of the home button is a back button, that works with some apps and not others, the inconsistency is annoying. It came charged so I could use it right away and with CA weather alerts turned on, it took me a while to figure out how to turn them off, there are three dots on the upper left side of the app that control the settings. It is fast, crispy, and mostly sounds very good. See the few noted exceptions below. The size and weight is perfect, easy to hold one handed. The power button is on the bottom left of the projector circle. I’ve accidentally hit it and turn it off while reading using the kindle app in a portrait mode. The kick stand is sturdy and easy to use, I love that it is built in but I like reading on the kindle app in portrait and I haven’t figured out a way to stand it vertically in an even way, see the picture. As a workshop leader, I really want to use the projector feature in my business. What is preventing me is finding a way to advance the PowerPoint slides remotely. I asked on Amazon (no answer), I send Levono an email (no reply), and I’ve searched the apps store and google. I haven’t found a simple solution. If I do I will post it here. Two things I find annoying and I don’t know if it’s the tablet or the apps. When I’m reading in the kindle app and a new text notification appears on the top the screen momentarily goes blank and resets itself. I did notice once the audio and video were slightly off using amazon video through chrome. The battery life is advertised as long life, but I must charge it more often than the older iPad I have that I use the exact same way. I will try as another reviewer noted to remove some apps. I love the idea of the projector and have been playing with it. The challenge is finding a blank wall and a stable flat surface for the projector. Overall, I love this tablet, the speed, the crisp viewing, and ease of use. ... show more

Am I keeping it? Yes. Can I recommend it? Not really. Based on my experience with this tablet, I would say steer clear of Lenovo products in general. Some of the hardware here is great, and the projector and sound system are unique. In Android, of course, unique hardware and the unique firmware it requires mean unique glitches. The audio processing creates distorted audio in some games whether Atmos is turned on or off, and seems to cut in and out in Audible. With Atmos off, the stereo speakers on my HTC phone outperform this tablet, but with Atmos the sound quality is closer to a TV than a tablet. I've been using the projector and speakers extensively as a bedroom TV, and it's a solid experience. The one big drawback is, Android in general and the big streaming apps in particular are less than remote friendly, and while there are great Android-to-Windows remote apps out there, the selection of Android-to-Android remotes is poor. The one that might be serviceable, Teamviewer, is not supported on this tablet. Performance is smooth overall and adequate to most anything you would try to do on Android, but doesn't live up to the advertised specs. Battery life has been a particular disappointment for many users of all the Tab 3 models. Actual screen time is good on mine, something like 9 hours of media and browsing or 4 hours of gaming, but the thing bleeds power in standby. Leave it sitting for more than two days, and it will be dead. In general, Lenovo went overkill on all hardware but optimized nothing. Again, it's adequate with no showstopping lag or bugs, but if your main concerns are performance and stability, look elsewhere. For me, a large, greater-than-HD screen was a priority, and adding one more use case (the projector as bedroom TV) was a big factor in whether a tablet was worth having at all. Comics on the QHD display have been great, as has Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and local media on the projector. I've even been playing some mobile games, despite being a "serious gamer." The stand is handy, and I do use the hanger to mount the tablet over my bed and project on the opposite wall. Build quality of the aluminum chassis is maybe a little too solid - you could gouge furniture pretty good with the corners of the stand. Lenovo skinning and bloatware are minimal, which is good, because it's unlikely we'll see much support for root, ROMs or other volunteer dev efforts on this pricey, niche device. So again, if the projector is a big enough draw, the tablet will be adequate for everything else. Maaaaaaaybe the Plus would be worthwhile if you really want that screen, but I would probably look at other brands with a better record for support and optimization. UPDATE 18 August 2018: Over a year and a half later, the news is no news. None of the above issues have been fixed, Lenovo stopped updating the device a few months after release, and there are no custom ROMs (there is root). But, I'm still using the tab, and no new issues have cropped up. It's still an awesome comic reader, Reddit is Fun is outstanding on this screen, and the projector is still a serviceable big screen. I'm back here today because I was looking at one of those Anker Nebula projectors on sale, and landed on, "Nah, I'm good." I've considered a lot of TVs in the past year, too, and declined. ... show more
