  • Much Better Value than the AlpsWolf 4000mAh Camping Lantern
TL;DR: The LE lamp is a much better value than the AlpsWolf even if a few dollars more: 1) Better usable battery life 2) Far better functionality 3) Better quality I actually needed 2 lamps and bought this and the "AlpsWolf Camping Lantern" on different lightning deals on Prime day. I didn't intend on comparing the 2 but decided to see what the difference was when I got them. There are a bunch of cheaper lamps out there that look just like the LE lamp. The "AlpsWolf Camping Lantern Rechargeable Camping Flashlight 4000mAh" is one of the many cheap versions that look and have exactly the same functionality, only difference I see is that some say 4000mAh and some say 3600mAh. Here's what I found: 1) Usable Battery life. This one surprised me. This LE lamp is 2600mAh while the AlpsWolf says it's 4000mAh. I charged both up completely overnight then set them to their brightest setting and waited to see which would last longer. The first time the AlpsWolf did fine and outlasted the LE before going dim (lasted about 3.75 hours, higher than it's stated life!) BUT: I then I charged both up again overnight and did the test again. This time the AlpsWolf went to a very low dim level about the same time that the LE Lamp died (little over 2 hours). Here's where the LE clearly wins: the LE Lamp has a 180 degree mode at full brightness. When I'm camping, I don't need to light up the trees behind the table. In 180 degree mode the LE Lamp lasted about 4.5 hours. I reran the tests and each time other than the first time I used it, the AlpsWolf lamp went dim a little after 2 hours. The LE lamp at 360 degrees was consistent, lasting a little over 2 hours and over 4.5 hours at 180 degree mode. I didn't notice any significant brightness difference between the two lamps either when they were bright (note that the AlpsWolf brightness dims as the batter runs down though...). The AlpsWolf lamp covering is completely opaque while the LE Lamp is opaque but slightly more transparent so you can see the LEDs. 2) Functionality/Design The LE Lamp has many functional advantages: a) 4 charge level LEDs show battery percent charge b) ability to see charge level without having to turn on lamp (press power button once) c) both 360 & 180 degree illumination ability d) variable dimming capability for lamp. You don't just get bright and dim: select the lamp mode you want (360 or 180), then hold the power button and it will dim down. You can choose just how dim you want it. Press and hold again to brighten (this only works for white light lamp mode, not red or flashlight) e) Separate button for flashlight, right where your thumb will be when holding the lamp handle for the flashlight f) integrated hooks for hanging. Don't need a carabiner to hang the lamp g) integrated charging cable. Some might not like this, but the charging cable is part of the lamp and is wrapped around the body when not in use. I found this very handy and the design appears robust. h) consistency of light: the LE lamp is full brightness until it goes off (but then it's off and not usable). The AlpsWolf light would dim down as the battery ran lower. 3) Quality Both lamps appear almost identical. Almost. The major difference is the rear end with the controls (completely different), but looking closer the actual measurements on the green rings and front flashlight cowling differed between two by several millimeters. One is a good copy of the other. a) Weight: The Alpswolf supposedly has 2x 18650 batteries for 4000mAh while the LE Lamp only has a single battery for 2600mAh. But the LE Lamp weighed ~1/2 oz. more. Huh. b) LE Lamp: button detention, quality if the plastics, and fit and finish all were noticeably better. It felt more solid when being used. c) The charging indicator on the AlpsWolf is a bi-color LED in the power button. Blue means it's charged, red means it needs a charge. But the red was faint and only in a small part of the button. Yea it worked but just was cheap. 4) Longevity I can't address this for the LE Lamp. After 1 charge the AlpsWolf was already less than 2/3s of it's rated life (~2 hours / 3.5 hours rated) so it is being returned to Amazon. What didn't I like about the LE Lamp? a) Inconsistent power usage indicator. The power indicator would say 50% capacity after 3.5 hours in 180 mode then be dead an hour and a half later. b) lamp covering should be more opaque. I actually preferred the opaqueness of the AlpsWolf. I don't need to see the individual LEDs. Summary: The LE Lamp is just a better value overall: better usable battery life, better functionality, higher quality. It's not perfect, but no product is. While it's possible that I got a bad version of the AlpsWolf, that doesn't make up for the lower quality and worse functionality. I honestly have my doubts about the "4000mAh rating" on the AlpsWolf as well. The LE Lamp delivers what it promises, and importantly, it doesn't over promise either. Do I recommend the LE Lamp? Absolutely. ... show more
