PROS: Easy to play Attractive design Durable Can withstand temperature extremes and humidity levels CONS: High price Rounded back causes uke to slide onto lap Expensive strap (over $150 as of this writing) CONCLUSION: If you don't mind paying dearly for an instrument worth a fraction of its price, definitely buy this ... you'll love it. On the other hand, if funds are limited, check out the Enya Nova U. It's great fun to play, comes with a free strap, sounds amazing and is only 1/4 the price of the Lava U. They're both great sounding non-wooden instruments but dollar for dollar the Enya's carbon fiber uke is the far better alternative. ... show more

First, I ordered the Lava U uke on February 17th, and it was delivered on February 21st! All the way from China. The trick here is to order on that says, xx are in stock. If you order one that says 3-5 weeks--I wouldn't order that color. There should be enough choice to get one that satisfies you. Now for the uke: Freakin' amazing! Mine was already charged, and I've been playing it for hours. A USB charging cable is included, and charging it takes a few hours--then it seems to play forever. Everything this outfit does is first rate. The packaging was amazing, with a "zip-open" heavy duty cardboard box. Inside the box the uke case was enclosed in a styrofoam shell, and the case itself is beautiful to look at, and bulletproof. As for the uke itself, it sounds great acoustically, and with an amp. Plenty loud both ways. The effects buttons (reverb, chorus, and delay) are fun to play around with, and really work great. They could knurl the buttons for easier adjustment, but no real complaint considering everything else. The carbon fiber body is flawless; smooth as an egg all the way around, same goes for the fancy case. The tuners are top drawer, really smooth to operate. the strings are fluorocarbon with a high G. A strap button is attached at the front of the body, but not where the amp cable goes in. I found a solution, listen up! Get a "strap jack" on Amazon for about $7.00--there's your rear strap button! Simply remove it if you want to plug in an amp. I'm going to suggest this to the maker, but I hear they are coming out with a strap button shortly, we'll see about that. What else? Well, this is just an amazing step forward in musical stringed instruments. You don't need an amp to get effects--how cool is that? Here's something that most uke makers always seem to leave out, nut width. Really gets to me, other than the ones that let you know up front (Kanilea, Koaloha, and others). This uke is the typical 1-3/8" nut width. I prefer a 1-1/2" nut width with decent sting spacing. Anyway, I like everything about this uke, and highly recommend it. ... show more

Lava U arrived today charged up in about 3 hours! SO easy to fret, incredible acoustics, and the acoustical "gagetry" (reverb, effects, etc) are lots of fun. The mic--is not a microphone or a gain, and does very little. INSANE that the strap is not available yet--it should be packed with one since the button for it is proprietary. I'm sure it will be just great but another $35 on this already very expensive instrument seems over the top to me. It's beautiful and sleek (I got the black one). The case is definitely a conversation piece, but is pretty much "bad" from the standpoint of not being able to store ANYTHING, except perhaps the usb cable and the useless user's manual in the tiny pocket. The uke fits so perfectly that it's obvious that when the strap comes it will have to be removed to put it into the case. The very smooth body makes this ukulele "slippery" to hold and that makes it very difficult for me. This Lava U tenor--has lots of plusses and a few minuses, but the best of all feature is that I don't have to worry about the wood dryng out in extreme temperature variations. The tuning system is WONDERFUL, easy and the frets and neck size and spacing are absolutely perfect for my hand. The sound is unbelievable (just beautiful) I think I'll love it--but for now after only three hours ON it----some discoveries need to be made. Edited to add: I have returned this instrument After working with this ukelele for several days, I have returned it. The quality didn't turn out to be what I expected. Knobs "jammed" and I was unable to adjust volume. Effects are very nice, and allow for some unique sound, but are less robust than demonstrated. The case has problems, the clasp is defective on this one, the compartment in the case is not large enough to allow for anything except the usb cable, really only for "show" The design IS gorgeous, the carbon fiber body allows for good resonance; the fact that the straps are unavailable --and then will cost $35 or more makes this way too expensive for this instrument. Changed rating from the top to mid-range for this because of these observations. IT IS SO MUCH FUN--just not quite what I expected. ... show more

I just received my beautiful sparkling red Lava U. It is a high quality and extremely well thought out design. There is supreme attention to detail in every regard - from the packaging, the space case, and the ukulele itself. I purchased this uke to experiment playing with electronic effects which are onboard. These are a lot of fun! This uke sounds great and arrived well setup with nice action up and down the fretboard. Now looking forward to the release of the strap. This is a great addition to my uke family! ... show more

I received on time today, opened it to find everything included. I press the on/off button, nothing happens so I figured I needed to charge it. So after an hour or so I pull the cord out and the light turns green. I turn the nobs, flip between chorus/delay, and try the on/off button. Nothing sounds any different and it's not shutting off. And the C string has a very ugly buzz. Felt like this was expensive at first; definitely feel like its very expensive for being sent a dud. ... show more
