I am both a design engineer and a contractor for designing and building houses. A few years ago, I tried a laser based measure device, it had too large an error, wasted money buying it. Now, I thought the technologies might improved and tried again to buy one. 1. The first one was a big size, heavy, but the measured values are different each time push the measure button even for the same distance, had to returned that unit. 2. Then tried another one, each time turn on the device, it always set the unit to meter. I use ft+in most of the time, not the meter. I would have to presss and hold the unit button for 2 long hold times to switch to the right unit, not convenient, returned that one. 3. Tried another one, it worked well, but did not have ft+in unit, but other 3 units: ft, in and meter, although the website clearly shows it had the ft+in unit, had to return it. 4. The display type was that the letter is bright, the back ground is dark. It works well indoor, but cannot read the numbers outdoor in day time, at which I need to do the measurement most of the time. Had to return it. 5. Another unit, everything is perfect, but the measurement result is about 1/4 inch off, pity. This unit, DTAPE 100, is perfect: 1. Super accurate (see the photo), almost no error at around 6 ft (2.122 meters), the error is <0.5mm, that's <0.5mm/2000mm = 1/4000 = 0.025%. In English unit, <0.5/16 in, much more than enough for my work. 2. High resolution result. In inch: it reads 1/16 in; In feet, it reads 3 digits after the decimal point; In meater, it reads 3 digits after the point, that's mm; in ft+in, it also reads 1/16 in. The best one on the market. 3. Whatever unit I set it, turn it off, turn it back on, the remains the same unit; 4. The display can be read easily both indoor and outdoor even under the strong sun light; 5. Small size and light weight; 6. Very good manual, well written; 7. Measures long distance, even at day time, can reach up to 300 ft - not easy to see the laser dot in bright day time - this is a common problem among all the laser measurement devices. 8. Wish it had: angle display, leveling bubbles, beam reflection strength display, better quality carrying bag.... but all these are not important nor necessary for using it as a measurement device. Highly recommend this one, but not all the other models.

This digital laser range finder distance measuring tool works well and is easy to use. Comparing distances it measured to the same distance measured with a traditional tape measure shows excellent correlation. When working alone and having to make measurements over longer distances, the digital laser range finder measuring tool is a real asset. Saves time and helps get accurate measurements the first time around.

It's just too convenient and handy not to have among your tools. High accuracy. The only improvements I can think of are perhaps etching a ruler on the back for covering/marking short measurements and maybe a magnet or something to help hold in it place in various situations. Traditional tape measures will always have their place but I find this laser one is the way to go in many scenarios.

Easy to use, seems sturdy. Measuring areas is a little confusing, because after making your two measurements, you get two results (and yes, I confirmed I was not measuring volume). The area screen has four lines, two for your measurements, the fourth is your area calculation. The mystery third line turns out to be circumference (well, I think the correct term would be perimeter), the measurement of the perimeter of the area you measured… helpful for projects that would involve the perimeter of an area, like crown molding.

This laser measuring tool looked like exactly what I needed for occasionally measuring structure elements that are difficult to reach. In practive, the laser is very weak and difficult to see in daylight more than 25 feet away. It also does not appear to be directly in line with the body. When I place in on a floor to measure ridge beam height, the dot is not directly overhead but of at an angle. I will be returning this tool and spending a bit more on a better product.

Good measurement tool. Only con is trying to see the red laser beam. No way to see it outdoors with full sun. Other than that it works well.
