Top Amazon Reviews

πŸš€ Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

Reviewers state that the log splitter is overall a decent product for the price. However, they also highlight issues with certain aspects of the product, such as the quality of assembly instructions, hardware, and hydraulic hose length. Despite these issues, many purchasers still found the product to be of good value, noting its solid performance in splitting logs, ease of use, fast start-up, and overall effectiveness.

Pros

  • πŸ‘ Affordably priced
  • πŸ‘ High performing, can handle hard-to-split wood
  • πŸ‘ Compact size and light weight for easy storage and mobility
  • πŸ‘ Rapid start-up and runs smoothly
  • πŸ‘ Powerful engine

Cons

  • πŸ‘Ž Poor assembly instructions
  • πŸ‘Ž Subpar or unsuited hardware used for application
  • πŸ‘Ž Insufficient hydraulic hose length
  • πŸ‘Ž Issues with incorrect or untightened pre-assembled components
  • πŸ‘Ž Doesn't provide exact fluid quantities for engine and hydraulic pump

Should I Buy It?

Overall, despite the aforementioned issues, most users found the product to be worth purchasing due to its affordability and solid performance. However, it might require a certain level of mechanical knowledge or familiarity with hydraulic systems for assembly and maintenance. If you're looking for a budget choice and are willing to make some compromise on the quality control and ease of assembly, this log splitter could be a decent option for you.

  • Worth Every Penny!
It’s small but powerful. It was delivered in damaged. Took about an hour to assemble. I took my time. I had read all the reviews so I double checked all the hydraulic lines and they other gotchas that others had mentioned. They were all tight and in good shape. The welds look very well done. The powder coating is thick and very well done. Only had two small issues. 1: the dipstick/cap for the hydraulic reservoir. The threads were messed up and it would not thread properly into the tank. Took a few minutes to dress the threads and problem solved. 2: the manual says 1.6 gallon capacity for hydraulic fluid. I put that amount in and it was not enough. The ram would not work smoothly and you could see the fluid foaming up on the clear return line. Put all two gallons in and it worked perfectly. It fired up and idled on the first pull after adding gas and oil. I worked it for about an hour and a half. Or should I say it worked me! It is a small little power house. All the wood in the pics is a freshly dropped red oak tree. It powered thru it like it was nothing. There really isn’t enough good things to say about this. Especially getting it for the sale price!!!!! Hope it lasts a good long while. If I could change one thing it would be the ability to hook it to my mower to pull it around with. I live on a big hill and that would be a huge help. I plan to add something to it to accomplish that. ... show more

  • Works like a champ
I bought this last year and finally assembled it fall 2023. I completed a couple steps of assembly before or after work for a couple days. I didn't rush and it came together easily. I added a couple lock washers to some bolts because I didn't know how much vibration there would be during use. I bought 2 gal of hydraulic fluid and 1 qt of oil and have some left of each. I had to use a flashlight to see the choke, gas shut-off, and start levers and knob well enough to use them (printing small and start/stop is in a hard-to-see location). It fired right up and I've already easily split a couple face cords. There was some smoking during the initial run as the engine warmed up. Since then no smoke, minimal vibration and it works like a charm. I don't know why I procrastinated so long assembling it. ... show more

  • Surprised by the Quality! Performs on the Same Level as Much Higher-Priced Splitters
The media could not be loaded. Got this splitter on sale for a great price 6 months ago and finally put it together last week! I found assembly to be reasonably simple, despite the graphic nature of the instructions that many reviewers mentioned were a pain. I took my time and went slowly, making sure all the factory-tightened parts were indeed tight, and getting everything snug and leak-proof. Took about an hour, but like I said, I took my time. None of the individual pieces are extremely heavy, so it's quite easy to put the entire unit together by yourself. The provided funnel helps with adding the hydraulic fluid, but it needs to be done slowly; otherwise, it will run all over the place. Adding the motor oil was easier because of the angle for that plug. The engine fired right up, and once I understood the controls, ran smoothly from start to finish. The compact size and light weight of this splitter are a real plus as far as storage and maneuverability are concerned. I was able to move it to areas that the big 600-lb units could never go. I bought this splitter mainly to split larger Sweetgum rounds that defeat my hand splitting because of its hard-to-split sinewy criss-cross grain. This "Little Blue Beast" ripped through every Sweetgum round I fed it. (See video clip and resulting pic.) So far, I'm very pleased with this product! I do wish the push plate stopped a little closer to the wedge, mainly because the Sweetgum I've been splitting needs to be split the entire length of the round. (It doesn't as much split as rip in half.) But that's not a huge issue. ... show more

  • Good Value Overall Not So Much on the Quality Control
*** At some point I will add some photographs*** The splitter arrived in a box. The bits and pieces, frankly, looked tossed into the box it was so askew. The rail the logs set on has a nice 5" or so dent/bend where someone wacked it quite nicely. Its a two man lift and one UPS driver so one can imagine why the contents were askew and the big rail dent.... The instructions for assembly are...really just pictures. If you can follow images, you can kind of make your way through it without issue. The hardware provided is probably not the best suited for the application. They used locking nuts on some components, but others they did not where I would have given the amount of vibration this endures. I would have expect, just from a safety standpoint, grade 8 bolts for the hydraulic cylinder. At some point I will change out the hardware to something a little more suited to the application. As other have said, the hydraulic hose length is just BARELY long enough making this aspect of the assembly the worst part about the assembly. The second worst was finding hose ends not tightened from the mfg - good thing I checked, or so I thought I diverted an oil leak disaster..... The cylinder looks beefy. the welds look good. The engine looks solid - a lot of the engines coming out of china are made by the same companies with just a private label and specific application modifications made. I am assuming, given there is not much to them, this one is no different. Added oil to the engine, fuel, and hydraulic oil. Started right up. I like to let my engines run for 45 minutes at a moderate RPM for break in. Everything was going smoothly until about, oh, 30 minutes into the break in when hydraulic oil starts leaking from the hydraulic pump....what a mess. The leak made it look like the casing seam was leaking....but it turned out, someone at the MFG did not tighten down the pressure relief value on the hydraulic pump so it backed its way out enough to start pouring out hydraulic fluid. All-in-all, the quality of the bit is on the lower end as noted by other reviews. But....the price you pay reflects that and I was going in for something cheap as I consider it a throwaway unit. I was really disappointed in how it arrived from the factory...It was kind of feeling like no pride in workmanship. I put the log splitter through about 10 hours of non-stop work splitting logs I've piled up for the last year - a total of exactly four 8' log racks full to the top plus splitting chinks of micro cuts for a large wood stockpile for my wife's little chimenea area . Went through them like a champ. We'll see if it survives the 100 plus trees I still need to timber and split and huge pile of now seasoned whole timber laying in the back forty I've not gotten to....lol. Would I buy this again? As of right now, sure I would. I got it purring like a cat. I've got years of experience in my youth working with hydraulic systems, so I could have taken the whole thing apart and reassembled it if I needed to in order to get the hoses one...lol. Would I recommend you buy it? I wouldn't until they change that hydraulic hose length issue (It is so tight, you have to loosen hoses to give you just enough play to get them on - and you are still risking cross threading the whole time as the tolerance is so tight you can't turn the fitting by hand - you have to use a wrench). I mean, the extra hose length is pennies.... That, and I am not a big fan of companies that ship stuff preassembled from the factory and have no quality control to ensure critical components are tightened as they should be before they hit the door...No excuse given there is just not a lot going on in the hydraulic loop. These to factors, for me, make it a risky buy if you are not mechanically inclined. Frankly, I had to run over to lowes to pick up some 4x4's for a project and a cover for this (grill covers make great outdoor covers for your small equipment btw).....Anyway, right over by the grills they had a 13 ton unit for I think somewhere around 970 or so that was visually twice the unit this was; longer, heavier, larger splitter surface, longer rack, wider press....man... and I did stop and look at it and think, boy, I probably should have just bought this. I would recommend you look at that unit as it was larger and beefier than this little unit and I think they come pre-assembled and they do deliver :) ... show more
