  • My first smart lock, easy to install and seems to work fine with SmartThings
Installation was a breeze, the instructions provided were pretty clear, it took me a couple once overs for some of the steps, but overall I had no struggles. I finished the installation within an hour. I pre-drilled some of the holes for the screws instead of relying the the screws themselves to tap the holes; I highly recommend this, especially for the longer screws. Adding it to my SmartThings hub was also a piece of cake, I just initiated adding a device with the SmartThings app on my phone, pressed the "A" button on the lock as shown in the manual, and then it asked me to scan the QR code on the lock itself. That was pretty much it. I can now tell SmartThings to automatically lock the door when it detects that my wife and I have both left the house. The only thing that was a little confusing during installation/setup was the "auto-handing" process that takes place the first time you put in the batteries. The lock will automatically determine if turning the knob clockwise or or counterclockwise is to lock and vice versa. It does this by automatically trying to turn it each way and figure out the results based on, I think, if it comes across resistance while turning. I don't think it succeeded when I initially installed the batteries, but when I tried using the app to lock the door for the first time, it sounded like it automatically attempted it again, and this time, it figured out that turning counterclockwise was to lock my door. In the end it worked out, I just couldn't really understand at what point in the installation/setup process this was meant to happen. Setting codes via the keypad was pretty easy as well, though later I found that you could also do it through the Smartthings app. I haven't had a reason to add more than one code yet, so I haven't actually added a code via the app but it seems possible. It also looks like you can delete codes from the app as well; but I don't think you can delete a code via the keypad without resetting the lock. That said, the process through the app is not very intuitive; in the SmartThings app, you don't add/delete codes through the device settings of the lock itself. There is another section in the "Life" tab of the SmartThings app that handles "Smart Lock Guest Access". This section seems to be automatically added when you add at least one smart lock to SmartThings, it did not exist before I added this lock. There you can add/delete codes for any number of locks you have, not just this specific Kwikset 620 lock. Not the most straight forward UI but the functionality appears to be there. And finally, the physical keyhole can be retooled by the customer to accept any other key that is compatible with Kwikset. You need a special tool from Kiwkset to retool the lock, which was included with the 620. I was lucky that my current front door key was compatible so now I can use my existing physical house key to lock and unlock; I don't use the keys that came with the 620. Overall, I'm very pleased with this lock, it's simple but does its job just fine. I'm curious to find out how long the batteries last. So far it's only been a week, and the battery meter still says 100%, if that means anything :D EDIT: 06-02-2025: It's been about 1 year and 7 months now, and I've had to change the battery once so far. I don't remember exactly when I changed them out, but it was around the 1 year mark. The lock currently says the 2nd set of batteries is at 62%. ... show more

  • Commercial Quality and Reliable. Rekeying feature is awesome
Color: Venetian Bronze Size: Traditional Pattern Name: Z-Wave
Relatively easy installation though I had to open up the deadbolt hole a bit from the one that this replaced. Very reliable, stable connection to my home automation system, but did have to add/delete a couple of times to have it recognized (but I suspect that’s a z-wave issue, happened on other devices in my system too). I’m able to read status, lock and unlock remotely and have alerts sent when it’s unlocked for longer than 10 minutes - it’s on my garage entry door, which must remain locked when not occupied. Using it on a Homeseer z-wave automation system. The ease of re-keying cannot be stressed enough; I have Kwikset locks already and was able to rekey to match my existing keys in no time flat, a GREAT feature. Very pleased with this. ... show more

  • Great remote access control
I like the remote access from my Smartthings app, shows the battery status of the lock which is very important if you have a tenant using it, so they don't end up locking them self's out at some point due to dead battery, which has happened before. Easy to reprogram codes remotely, no need to be present for the new leases/tenants just for the lock programming (I travel frequently). Price was excellent on Amazon. It didn't require any special software on my Smartthings account, just needed to enable something in existing app, can't remember what was it called at this point. Shows lock status, you can lock, unlock, enter new codes or erase old ones, and shows activity time stamps. It isn't for someone who never tried lock installation, locking mechanism need to be able to move freely at all times with no resistance. Not difficult if you take time with installation, you may need to Dremel or chisel holes on the doorframe a bit. My hub is on the opposite side of the basement, lock is on the first floor in an old four story building, no problem with the signal. This is the Z-wave protocol, btw. Works for me, I will buy more ... show more

  • Read this before installing.
Color: Satin Nickel Size: Traditional Pattern Name: Z-Wave
Update May 2025: Problems and warnings: 1. The manual is GROSSLY misleading. It says to install the lock in the door and then attempt to pair. However, per communication from their support, the controller must be 12" inches from the lock to pair initially. Once it pairs, the controller can be moved. Communication has been reliable and solid. 2. I paired with an Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 with Home Assistant. Since then, battery life has been good, about 6 months. 3. Samsung SmartThings is dead. I changed over to Home Assistant running on a tiny USFF computer under Proxmox. Build quality is good and I have had no further problems with it. Prior review from 2022: It has been only two months since I installed this lock and it has already drained one set of four AA batteries. As I was leaving and pushed the button to lock, it flashed orange and refused to activate the lock. I tested the batteries and found they were already drained. The listing says batteries last a year; that is a lie. Had I known about this, I would never have bought this lock. Update July 2023: This thing had now lost connection to the Samsung SmartThings hub after a few months. It showed "offline." I did a factory reset and attempted to connect to a Z-Wave hub through HomeAssistant. It only picks up as an unknown Node. I think the thing is dead. ... show more

  • Kwikset makes a solid smart lock
Color: Venetian Bronze Size: Traditional Pattern Name: Z-Wave
Purchased this lock for my mom.... took a bit of a gamble because I wasn't sure she would actually like it, or thought it might be too "techy" for her to use and she'd end up using her key anyway. I installed it and linked it to her Ring app and I have to say that she LOVES it. Loves the convenience of being able to enter a code, check the status light to see if the door is locked, or lock/unlock via the Ring app. She's also given everyone in the family a code so people can let themselves in when they come over. I also like that this model has a key option (which I was able to easily re-key to fit her current Kwikset key for the previous lock that had been on the door) so that if the battery goes dead, she can still use her key to get into the house. Also spent some time playing with it before I realized that pressing the large Kwikset button before entering your code will make the keypad light up and stay lit (for night time use). Otherwise the buttons light up for a split second as you press each number but then shut back off. This may be outlined in the directions somewhere but in case it isn't, now you know! I have the Kwikset version of this lock that doesn't have physical keys and it just touch screen and I almost like this model better because you can tell when you press the keys. With the touch screen version, if I'm entering the code while the garage door is going up or down I can't always hear the beeps and sometimes miss or double press a button. This isn't an issue with the physical buttons on this version. Overall, a great smart lock! ... show more

  • Won't integrate with Ring; both companies are pointing fingers at each other.
Color: Venetian Bronze Size: Traditional Pattern Name: Z-Wave
This lock might have come with a critical security configuration error, causing it not to integrate with Ring. I called Kwikset customer support and they said it was Ring's problem. After nearly 2 hours on the phone with Ring, they had to open a case with their engineers as no troubleshooting steps worked. Resolution is pending. Update ~3 days later: Ring could not get this lock to integrate with their system. After hours of troubleshooting steps on the phone and waiting a few days for them to take it to their engineers, ring said the problem is with the lock. I then called kwikset again to explain the issue, and they said that there's nothing they can do and that they won't send a replacement or do anything for me. Even though the box claims it works with ring. Neither company could do anything so I'm going to have to return the stupid thing. I do not recommend this company nor do I recommend this lock for those trying to integrate with Ring. Physical installation was a breeze. If you're looking to integrate this lock with a security app, however, I'd recommend something else as this is incredibly frustrating. ... show more

  • Big improvement over 1st Gen Kwikset Z-Wave Locks
Color: Venetian Bronze Size: Traditional Pattern Name: Z-Wave
This was to replace a Kwikset 910 I had for several years that was just not reliable enough. The 910 is very first generation with Z-Wave (S0 security) and it would work perfectly 9 out of 10 times, but I grew impatient with the 10% problem - it would not report that it was locked when it was locked. If I re-interviewed the device, it would then correct itself. This happened enough to become an irritant, although I had those 910 locks a solid decade so I guess that isn't too bad for this type of technology. I stayed with Kwikset in that I could re-key the new lock to match the keys for the old locks. This is Z-Wave Plus with the S2 security, and appears much more reliable and quicker to report in than the 910. Z-Wave is great technology in that you have no cloud connection and are independent from any specific company and their app. [diatribe again home tech cloud companies removed, dear reader] I've dumped everything cloud based and moved to Z-Wave where possible - 38 devices in the house right now. For this lock our most common scenario is that when we return home and correctly enter the combo, both the door unlocks and the alarm is disarmed along with other stuff - entry lights, heating/AC, etc - no running to the alarm panel to enter (the identical code for most people) a code. I can also trigger notifications for incorrect codes entered or when a key (we never use keys) is used so that I know if someone has picked the lock. I send out all lock operations using Pushover to our phones. I also put a NFC tag on the door that I can hold my phone up to for the lock to open. I have not tried using phone presence as a means to unlock, but could. Battery life is good - lithium batteries are a boon and a bust, in that they can last a year in this lock but the lock will never report low battery because lithium batteries hold voltage until almost dead. But you can tell when the batteries are near the end as they strain to open the lock. I just change the batteries when I hear the strain. They last long enough to not annoy me. The door is probably locked/unlocked 4-6 times on the average day, YMMV. I use Z-Wave JS with this and Home Assistant with the Keymaster integration. Keymaster give you more flexibility than you need with guest or worker codes that are scheduled at days/times. We just use a single guest/worker code that we disable most of the time. As far as voice control we can do that if we want via Google Home, but generally don't. So yes, we can say "Hey Google, is the Front Door Locked" and it will answer if we are not near our phones. Overall I'm happy, but disappointed in having to replace our 910 era locks. At least these are cheaper. ... show more

  • Great Price and value for a ZWAVE Lock for Hubitat and APPLE HomeKit Great Price and value for a ZWAVE Lock for Hubitat and APPLE HomeKit
Works well with Hubitat Zwave Home Automation Hub (Model C-8 Pro) and Apple HomeKit once properly paired. I used the Hubitat Hub to interface to Apple's HomeKit. (Works very well) The Security Lock now appears in both apps. Initially had a problem pairing it with the Hubitat Hub. NOTE: Pairing the lock and using the security feature requires the lock to be reset and put into inclusion mode. Take note that the app has a bug where the security code you need to enter (5 Digit) could not be entered properly due to a few blank spaces set in the window which you can't see. Had to press delete multiple times in the window to get ride of the spaces in order to pair the lock. (Took a few hours to figure out after multiple bus resets etc) The application was experiencing an issue with pairing, preventing a successful connection. Had to reboot the Hub multiple times to rebuild the Zwave NODES network. This was not an issue with the Lock-Just Hubitat. All is functioning correctly now after a few hours of repeatedly attempting to pair the lock using the INCLUSION/EXCLUSION commands. If the security code is not entered correctly, the application does not notify the user of this issue and permits the lock to remain in a pending state. The sole method to resolve this issue is to perform a hard reset of the bus and subsequently exclude the pending lock. Despite the successful repair of the Z-Wave network, the affected Node remains in an undesirable state. The device was configured as a pending Specific Type Door Lock, rendering it inaccessible. Consequently, a reboot of the Hub is necessary, followed by an exclusion process to restore access to the network. ... show more
