  • Better than the Other Products on the Market but still a Ways to Go for True Seamless Integration
Color: Venetian Bronze Style: Traditional
*Updates on Homekit Functionality at the End of the Review* Original Review: I will flesh out my review as time goes by. Purpose of Purchase To make life easier for my wife. Also, I am traveling soon for business, so I wanted to make sure she had absolute ease of access if needed. Installation I opened the box a while ago but when it came time for installation, someone threw away the Quickstart Card already and I couldn't find any instructions laying around. Luckily, you can figure out the installation by looking at the picture. I had to repeat a step or two to make sure I used all the screws. Later, after I installed the app, only then did I see the instructions are PDF only and through the APP! *IMPORTANT* - the "Handing Process" I initially thought this product was a hunk of junk because the bolt didn't even work smoothly when operating the bolt manually. And when I used the APP it wouldn't close and would get jammed. Because as stated above I didn't have instructions at the time of installation, I didn't know about the "Handing Process". Luckily, you can reset the "Handing Process" where the lock figures out its orientation. Following the online FAQ to reset the "Handing Process" didn't work for me. I called Tech Support and they gave me a different set of directions (odd) which worked. Note to Owners with Double-Doors So if you have a Double-Door Design with the Handle Grip, just be cognizant of replacing everything with matching hardware. And there will be a hole you need to cover on the bottom. I'm no hardware expert, but I went to Home Depot and used a Cabinet Door Knob to cover the hole and I had some existing Door Handle sets lying around for the rest. Maybe there is a more elegant solution but just something to keep in mind if you have Double Doors. Again, as I didn't have a lot of time, I ended up having to purchase a Defiant Bolt set (because it was the cheapest at Home Depot) just to cover the top hole. They didn't have any Door Hole Covers in Bronze at the Home Depot or Dummy Bolt Sets. I'm sure there is availability online, but will look into it when I am back in town. Homekit I have an Apple TV 4th Gen and an iPad 3 that I can use as a dedicated Homekit Hub. The iPad 3 unfortunately does not support iOS10 so that was out of the equation. I enabled the necessary settings on the Apple TV to make it a "hub". Now I can remotely lock and unlock the Kwikset as long as I have internet access. It is a bit unreliable though--understandably so as my Apple TV is located quite some distance from the Front Door. Access for Other Family Members So from the Kwikset Premis APP, you can invite other users to access the Lock through Homekit. I invited my wife. She accepted and the device appeared on her phone but she couldn't unlock the door. Since I am leaving soon, I will just assume this is user error until I can dedicate some time to troubleshoot. I really wish you can just pair multiple users (with their own Apple ID and Keychain set) to the Kwikset Premis. Unfortunately, as it is now, once I have paired the device with my AppleID, I have to share the Homekit with others, and as above stated, I can't get it to work currently. So for now, I just created a User and Code for my wife to punch-in on the Keypad. Interim Verdict There are a lot of "Smart-Home" devices out there. For me, they are supposed to be seamless/fully integrated and actually make my life more convenient to be a 5-star rating. For example, almost every room in my house has a Lutron Dimmer controlled by the Lutron Smart Bridge. That is a seamlessly integrated Smart-Home Smart device: I can turn lights on and off very easily in less than 5 seconds from my phone without any fiddling or waiting. Another example is my Nest. Again, seamlessly integrated and can adjust very easily anywhere. On the other hand, I have an Anova Bluetooth Sous-Vide device. The Bluetooth Feature for me is completely useless, let alone spending more money to get the Wi-Fi version. The APP is just a glorified timer with a GUI. It is much faster and more convenient for me to set the temperature and use my phone's Clock App as a timer manually. The same can be said for this Kwikset Premis. Rather than fiddling with the APP, which takes a long time to load and sync, for now, I just set different codes for different users and they just punch it in to open the Front Door. To that effect, at least, it works very well. I can also set unique codes for the maid and delete them later. If I come back and can't get the Homekit working on my wife's phone, I will just use the APP for Device Maintenance and User Management and rely solely on the Keypad. Update 2/7/2017 I am still overseas traveling. Every time my wife unlocks or locks the door, I get a notification on my phone. I can consistently unlock and lock my Premis remotely overseas. My Apple TV 4th Gen is upstairs and at a minimum 30 feet above and away from the Front Door. So the Kwikset Premis App is working consistently for me *now*. I have no logical explanation for why everything works perfectly now. My wife is technically clueless and I am obviously several thousand miles away. "Some settling occurred." The time it takes for the Kwikset Premis App to load, sync, and update status is, on average, 7 seconds. The time it takes for the Nest App to load, sync, and update current temperature settings, is also 7 seconds, although after the initial load, each consequent load within a reasonable time thereafter, is around 2 seconds. So it's comparable now. If the Kwikset Premis turns out to be a consistent performer in a 12 month period, I will upgrade my rating. Update 2/12/2017 I am back home now. I got Homekit fully functional for me and my wife. No need to use the Kwikset Premis app anymore. Unlocking and locking from Favorites is instantaneous and no need to wait the 7 seconds for the app to load and sync. Update 2/20/2017 First Firmware Update. Battery is already at 90% in a short four week period. Shorter than expected but not terrible I guess. Hopefully this firmware update really does address the battery life. ... show more

  • Lock is ok but app is trash and Kwikset doesn’t care
Color: Venetian Bronze Style: Traditional
The lock works as it should, as long as you don’t actually need the functionality of the app. I DO need all the functions of the app (which are promised in the listing) so this is a big issue for me. The app hasn’t been updated in 2 years (see picture 2) which is ridiculous for a “smart” lock. After iOS 12.4.1 which was released over two months ago the app stopped functioning properly. It tries to take you through setup all over again. You can unlock and lock the apps remotely through Apple HomeKit but if you need to change codes, access the logs, etc. (things that were promised when purchasing the locks) you’re out of luck. This wouldn’t be a huge deal except we think someone tried to use our lock to get into our home in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago. I NEED to be able to see the logs to see if it was someone using a code I’ve given someone during off hours, random buttons, malfunction, whatever. I’ve contacted kwikset through phone, email, and Facebook and their answer is that engineers are working on it. They don’t seem to care about what I’m dealing with in the meantime. And I don’t believe they are working on it at all, because again, it’s been 2 years since the last update and two months since the application stopped working. It seems like they’ve just abandoned updates for this product but they’re still attempting to sell more premis locks. November 2019 Update: Still no app update from kwikset or eta on when this will be fixed. Save your sanity and don’t buy this lock. We have a new lock on the way so I guess we’re just out the money for the kwikset locks we’d already purchased. ... show more

  • Remote Functionality is Unreliable
Color: Black Style: Contemporary
First off, this lock is the same thing as Kwikset's lock in the Century shape (ASIN: B01N0AV4Z7), and odd how that lock has very average reviews and this lock in the Contemporary shape has stellar reviews...the difference? Notice how 90% of the reviews on this lock are Paid For (VINE VOICE) with free product to the reviewer. That speaks volumes. Cons: -Remote functionality for me has been spotty, at best. When away from home, "No Response" is what I see most often after several seconds of letting this lock load: either in the Home app, or, the Kwikset app. This is despite having multiple Apple TV 4Ks and also 2 HomePods within 10-20 feet of the lock both obstructed (1-2 walls) and unobstructed (0 walls). -Kwikset Premis iOS app is Still on version 1.1.1...for 2 YEARS running! No updates in sight for compatibility with latest versions of HomeKit despite this lock Only being compatible with HomeKit. Not very confidence inspiring. -Occasionally the touch screen is temperamental, mainly when waking up and when tapping numbers in quick succession and then several Loud error beeps blare at you repeatedly and you have to start over again because the code was rejected. -Expensive. Every other model and competitor has sales for Prime Day, Black Friday etc and typically hover around 150 dollars while this lock is always 225 minimum. This would be fine, If it operated flawlessly, especially when not on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (aka, away from home), but it does not! -Only Apple HomeKit is supported by this model. Could be seen as a Pro honestly since this happens all the time: Amazon has alarming (lack of) privacy policies compared to Apple, and often lets seemingly any manufacturer build Alexa in... while Apple has a semblance of regard for your privacy and security, which leads to companies having to jump thru a couple more hoops to release a product compatible with their HomeKit platform. Pros: -Easy to rekey in Seconds. Has Kwikset's SmartKey feature, so buying multiple locks for the house is no big deal since you can rekey them all to take the same key as one another within a couple of minutes tops. Much appreciated! -Can turn off the SecureScreen feature within the Kwikset app so that no random digits need to be keyed in every time you enter your code. Personal preference, nice to have the option for sure. Codes (up to 30 unique ones) can be managed from the app. -Heavy, metal, feels premium and well made unlike some competitors which are dramatically cheaper, but alas are made of plastic. Profile of the backplate is acceptable in size...I had wanted to get Schlage initially but the wife does not approve of the ugly and oversized (Apple version) of their lock. Kwikset is wife approved for style and size. -Nice neutral stealth black color, plus touchscreen blends in to lock housing until you tap on it to wake it up and have white back-lit buttons. -Beeps can be turned off but even when on, plus the noise of the locking mechanism, are reasonable in volume. Some locks are too loud and whir too long (Friday lock) but this Premis lock has been fine. -Physical key is always available as a backup in case the electronics or connection fail. -No hub needed. Although sometimes I wonder if when it comes to hubs, the one product type I should relent and deal with needing an extra hub for is a smart lock...it just needs to Always work and hubs can help with that. In the meantime, your hub is just the Apple TV (4th gen or newer) or a HomePod that you likely already own. -Auto-lock can be set to on/off and in different intervals so that if you forget to lock the door behind you the deadbolt will have your back and lock after 1 min, 2 min, or 3 min etc. TL;DR: Good but not great lock, just really, really wish it Always worked when away from home. The key of course always works and so do the multiple codes we set up for ourselves and a tenant too. When they move/I buy more locks I can rekey them in a minute or less. Lock looks good and battery life has been fine so far and batteries are easy to access, replace. Wish it was more competitive on price and worked remotely reliably. 3/5 until that is fixed. ... show more
