Overall, I love this product and I recommend it. However there are some caveats and the operation is not perfect. I installed the Level Bolt on a guest room that I intend to rent out to strangers, and it is perfect for this purpose. I love being able to send access codes to people's phones and then deny them access once they leave. This is so much safer and more reliable than using a lock box. And honestly, the product sells itself. The guests love it and they're shocked it just works like magic! So my first caveat is that the door, along with the locks, must be standard doors. They have a "compatibility check" which gives you standard measurements so you may assess your own door prior to purchase. My front door, which was built over a hundred years ago, would not be a candidate for Level locks. This was plainly evident as I was installing the Bolt to my guestroom door. Installing the actual lock is quite simple, however making sure the bolt slid effortlessly into the hole was more tedious. I had to enlarge the hole with a knife and drill. The strike plate has beveled edges to help guide the lock into position. Which brings me to my second caveat. While the motor in the Level Bolt is strong enough to lock, it does not get into the fully locked position unless I press the door closed. Thankfully, even with the error, the lock is extended enough so that you cannot open the door. Applying a little pressure while I use Level Bolt will lock it into place fully. This might be just some imperfection with my door or maybe I have some more whittling to do. They also have this calibrate function to customize the lock to the door, but it didn't do much better after calibration. Lastly, I use an Android phone, so Level Lock will only work while I am within bluetooth range. This hasn't been a problem for me yet. IOS phones have HomeKit integration, which allows for remote and other uses. I'm hoping Android will come out with something like that as well. ... show more

    • After 3 yrs Matter transformed the Bolts into what I hoped for - Update

Update: Bought another and was very pleased with the subsequent Matter update. As soon as the update was done and it was added to my Apple Home, the framework immediately started downloading and installing the latest 3.4 update. Seamless! The Bolts work nearly instantly! After moving the HomePods absurdly close for the BLE to work reliably and enduring glacial interactions with them for almost 3 years, the Matter upgrade transformed how they operate. The BLE operations took 8-10 seconds and the same operation with Matter is under 2 seconds. Support would tell me my situation was unsupported because of metal doors, or enclosures, when the HomePods were less than 6ft away. Matter has changed all that, now they just work. Installation is straightforward, but it requires a fair amount more patience than a normal deadbolt installation. The cylinder must be perfectly aligned with the screws and cases, the rings cannot come anywhere close to the cylinder, and the bolt cannot bind, scrape or rub into the strike plate. It took quite a while for support to provide any insights, when the key worked easily and perfectly, but the Bolt cylinder itself wouldn’t. I have been trying for a year to get and keep my Level connected to Ring and Amazon. I've replaced my Level once and my Ring twice. The connectivity only lasts for a few minutes/hours then it goes away. To restore I have to remove the lock from the Level and Ring apps and reinstall. This is especially hard when I have to "reset" the lock to factory norms (erase its current stored connectivity.) The lock is frustrating to no end. I would never buy another. The Level Bolt requires research! First there is the “Works with Alexa, Works with Ring” claim. You need to know that it works with Alexa only if you are willing to turn on Amazon Sidewalk. There are pluses and minuses here, but do your research to determine if you are willing to share some of your WiFi with the “neighborhood.” Then you need one very important thing, a wired Ring Doorbell at the same door. Those are some big requirements. Does your door have an existing hardwired doorbell? Do you have a Ring Pro doorbell or are you willing to buy and install one? You see, the ONLY way to bridge the Level to the outside world beyond Bluetooth connectivity with your phone is via the SPECIFIC Ring doorbell. So if you want all the features that compete with August and other smart locks you must install this one product, which isn’t cheap. AND you need to be OK with Sidewalk. This information is almost nonexistent on Amazon and you have to drill way down on the Level website to find it. Second the Bolt was easy to install, as advertised. BUT, the strike plate on the door jamb is another thing. The existing plate on my door was not compatible with the larger bolt of the Level lock. So the strike plate provided by Level needed to be installed. This was an issue because the existing plate was smaller than the Level plate. The mounting holes for the Level plate didn’t line up with the holes in the jamb. So we needed to drill new holes. The Level plate is quite thick. It didn’t fit in the gap between the door and the jamb. So It needed to be “mortised” in using a hammer and chisel. Then the strike pocket wasn’t deep enough so it too needed to be widened and deepened. So the tools needed included a power drill, two drill bits, a hammer and a sharp chisel. The level of skill required may exceed the abilities of the average DIYer. The Level Bolt is a slick piece of well engineered tech. It’s features compete well with the competition. But be ware of the bridge (hub) requirements of the Ring Pro to connect it to the outside world. Hope your connectivity works. And hope that your door prep is compatible with the parts provided. ... show more
