  • Use
Very light weight and durable. I use it all the time

  • MUST HAVE. Flaws totally worth it.
Ok so first, I'll lead with BUY THIS. If you're going through like a skein a year, don't bother, but more than that and the flaws are worth the benefit. I'm kicking myself so hard for telling myself this wasn't mandatory for like 10 years and not spending the very few dollars for the sanity this provides. I finally just bit the bullet after either spending every hour of my day winding my own balls of yarn and getting hand cramps or using yarn straight from the skein and dealing with the uneven tension. I drug my whole big tote out and made a day of it. The first picture is a mere fraction of the neatly stacked cakes on cakes on cakes in my bin now. The second is last week with a very cheap very light amigurumi yarn that defines hard to work with and you can see how the first two I was sorta there, then got it and worked great from then on out. I had to cut so many snarls out mid wind, never had to start over. So why the star knock off? 1) learning curve. The top slots WILL NOT hold your yarn alone, I use a small piece of masking tape on the lose end then use that to fasten the end so I don't lose it. You will try and pull too tight and it will slip off itself, and too loose and have a wibbly wobbly cake. It will seem like you won't, but you will get it fast, I can do it without looking now. If it slips, just pull the yarn back through off the cake until you hit a solid point and try again with a different tension. Also the threading thing, it took a few tries to get the over down up thing. Once you get it you're fine though. It's one fluid motion even though the first five tries feel like solving a puzzle game. 2) it really does squeak! It's totally smooth for awhile then clicks a few times like it's skipping forward and squeaks like you're literally murdering it. I push in on the handle and wait it out, it does stop, doesn't affect the yarn, and isn't often enough to be worth not using it. I've tried varying speed, tension, pushing and pulling the handle, nothing. It goes 100% back to normal quickly, I'm pretty sure they are just possessed. I thought I was breaking it. Hundreds later, still chugging. Literally the first thing I do when I get yarn now is pull this little guy out. ... show more

  • All That & A Bag of Chips!!!!!
I do not have any idea why I waited as long as I did to purchase this! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would work so well! If you want to know how well I think it works, let me just say this; I am contemplating sending out a message to the entire county that I live in, offering free yarn rolling services because it works so great it makes it fun and fascinating! Even the male family members in my life stood around watching in awe because we were all just so fascinated at how simple it was and how fast it works. You simply assemble the winder, attach it to a solid surface, guide the yarn you are winding through the metal yarn guide arm that comes folded against the ball winder, (prior to this the guide arm needs to be moved and positioned opposite the winding handle for correct operation). I did not purchase a yarn swift along with this because I did not think it required the use of one. In fact, the instructions on the box are worded in a way that made me worry I did in fact need one but I can promise you that you don't. I dropped the yarn being wound to the floor or in a box, used my left hand to guide it with the appropriate tension going to the winder and turned the crank with my right hand and presto! I had a small box overflowing with yarn that needed wound and organized and when I was finished the box was barely half full. So not only am I going to be more organized but I undoubtedly have created space for more yarn!!! Because you can never have enough yarn, right? ? (My husband disagrees with that statement but nobody asked him hehe ..... :) The product states you can wind skeins up to 100 grams or 3.5 ounces and I can attest to this and more. I actually wound a skein that was 6 ounces (oops didn't read all instructions prior) and it did complete it to my satisfaction, however the crank felt mighty heavy as I was nearing the end and started making loud click sounds so I don't recommend going way over the recommended amounts so to not cause short life span of the winder. I hope this helps everyone in deciding whether or not to purchase because I would have sooner if I had found a review equal to mine! ... show more

  • Can't Believe I Waited So Long
If you've been working straight from skeins or spending time hand-winding, I highly recommend this winder! It works really well and makes really neat, cute cakes of yarn. Assembly: To make the package smaller, it does come with some assembly required. The directions are a little lacking, but it wasn't hard to figure out. Setup: The style of clamp is a little bit annoying to tighten, but it results in a really solid hold. The clamp itself is VERY adjustable to table thickness, which is another bonus to the style used. Use: You'll have to figure out the ideal speed, but it goes pretty quickly. I found it helpful NOT to have the skein too close to the winder, because it gives me more opportunity to stop winding if there's a tangle. It winds rather loosely on its own, but you can add more tension (and therefore tightness) to the yarn by letting it run through your fingers. Results: Once you figure out a good speed and tension, the cakes are really neat and tidy! It almost makes me wish I stored my yarn on shelves, because I would enjoy stacking up a bunch of these cute little cakes for display. But the most important part for me: the center-pull yarn comes RIGHT out as I crochet, which does NOT happen when I crochet straight from a skein!!! Size: I wish it were bigger, so I could easily wind larger skeins. It's perfect for the smaller "normal" sized skeins; the last one I wound was 4.5 ounces (specifically 277 yards of worsted weight) and it started to bump the yarn-guiding arm at the end. I plan to experiment with a double-ball winding solution I found on the internet, though. Google "THE SIMPLE HACK TO DOUBLE YOUR YARN WINDER CAPACITY" to see the trick. Apparent quality: So far, so good! The build seems solid, it survived my 7-year-old grinding the gears a bit when he didn't stop for a tangle, and it's not squeaky (yet). ... show more
