The block is very sturdy, nice size and shape. There are some issues with the block that are only aesthetic. There appears to be some cuts or manufacturing issues with the bottom of the block. When it is sitting upright it is noticeable as the gouge shows near the bottom on one of the sides but I could not get a good picture of it. Still it's near the bottom and not very noticeable but for this reason alone I would say that this would not make a good gift. Hopefully this is a one-time issue that just got past their quality control. This is a pretty beautiful set of knives. The handle design seems nice. It feels just slightly awkward in my hand but that may be because I'm used to my current knives. The blades have a nice black powder coating. That's probably going to be toast as soon as they need to be resharpened with a good stone. However right out of the box the blades are very sharp and light weight. This set comes with scissors and a hand held knife honing steel. That was definitely a surprise in this set. It definitely will inspire you to feel like a chef. These blades seem like they will be easy to clean and maintain. I haven't tested them by leaving them in water but nor would I want to. That's a good way to ruin a knife. I would suggest hand wash immediate dry and replace back in the block for safety. Do not use a dishwasher. For the money even with the issues with the block I think this is a fantastic value. Like I stated before I don't think it's giftable because of the block however I would not hesitate to give it to my daughter simply because of the knives. ... show more

I needed to replace my knife set after an unfortunate roommate cooking incident. I was looking for something that would have all different knives I would usually use but something that should last a lot longer than my other set. Not only are they practical and fit my somewhat intermediate culinary needs, they are sharp and look expensive with the wooden block. Not sure how long the black coating would last on the knives but so far I am very pleased with this set and so is my roommate. ... show more

This knife set is incredible. I don’t even know where to start with it. Let’s begin with what you will receive. Obviously, there is the knife block itself. The set includes one three-inch Bird’s Beak Peeling Knife, eight-inch Bread Knife, one eight-inch Chef’s Knife, one pair of Kitchen Scissors, one eight-inch Kitchen Sharpener Rob, one three- and half-inch Paring Knife, one five-point five-inch Small Santoku knife, one seven-inch Santoku knife, one six-inch Slicing Knife, eight four point five-inch Steak Knives, and one five-inch Utility Knife. All of these blades are forged from superior high-carbon stainless steel. They have a “full tang” that extends to the butt of the knife. “A full tang distributes weight more evenly along the knife, contributing to better balance.” This, in my eyes, makes for a better cutting blade. I love nothing more than when a blade smoothly slices through a tomato or evenly cuts through an onion – swiftly chopping, without making me cry because it’s so fast. Then to have them organized within their own wooden block is just the icing on the cake. They look neat, they’re organized, and every knife has its own home. Just wash your knife by hand, dry it with a soft cloth, then slip it into its perfect slot. Doing this will help keep your knife sharp too. This is a great looking knife set that looks modern and unique, which is a huge plus when you're leaving it out on your counter. It has more knives than I could pretend to know what the uses are for, but they are comfortable to hold, seem well balanced and cut cleanly and easily. I think that's all you need in a knife!
