OK, this is like buying a new computer. Expect to spend the whole day figuring it out. The machine itself is straight forward, but there's a bit of an art to making great espresso. You need to use a fine grind, the fresher, the better, and to tamp it down properly. I also turned the temperature up to the highest setting. Bottom line, it makes good espresso with plenty of crema. I even get crema with coffee that I ground weeks ago. The steaming wand works fine, but you have to take the time to learn the technique. At first, I thought the steaming wand was pretty useless, so I foolishly purchased the expensive foaming attachment from eBay, which is non-returnable. Now that I've learned the proper technique, I get better froth with the original steaming wand. There are plenty of you-tube videos which explain how to get the perfect froth. I purchased the espresso machine and the automatic milk frother. It takes time to learn the correct way by watching a lot of videos. Once you develop skills it's a great machine to have at home. I do recommend it for someone who doesn't mind taking extra time for a cup of coffee.

I was buying lattes 3 times a week and with this awesome machine I may never go back to the coffee shop again. It’s easy to attach the coffee shot tool. I tried several of the strainers and for some reason only one of them gives me the riche crème but that’s okay because the one that works is enough. Clean up is fast and the automatic clean process is simple you just need to have something to catch the water from the coffee dispenser and the steamer. The shots are strong enough for me and they pull fast. The tamper is heavy yet manageable so I get good shots every time. The only piece that I was unsure about was the shot puller. It has a plastic dispenser nozzle. I’ve only used all metal ones before and I wasn’t sure about it. But, so far, it’s been working very well and I’ve made about 100 lattes without issue. The only complaint I have, which more a user issue, is that when you leave the machine idling on the “Steam” option for a few minutes it’ll dump the water into the drip tray. For someone who’s in a rush, I forget to turn off the machine before it’s 7 minute auto shut off, and my drip tray will overflow, because I forgot to drain that from yesterdays overflow. Haha. Great machine. Comes with 4 little espresso portafilters. Two for preground coffee, two for freshly ground. It comes with a steaming cup, which I thought was small at first, but the wand only give so much clearance. This cup is the perfect size for this machine. ... show more

I was very impressed with the build quality when I first opened up the KES6403BM. I have used espresso machines ranging from over 2K (super automatics) to $150, and this feels like it costs more than it does. As a fan of KitchenAid, I was ready for a great experience. Setup was easy in the sense that there are practically no options, but then the trouble began... After clearing any residue from the tank, I tried making the first espresso. This has the standard semi-automatic style of porta-filter, with a very nice tamper. I ground the espresso fine and added it by weight. The water went through it in around 3 seconds and the "espresso" was sour and undrinkable. I did not get too worried, because espresso can be finnicky, but after trying a number of grinds, grinders, and different beans, the results were the same. Something was off and, even with a very hard tamp, the water was basically just running through. The result was always sour and gross. KitchenAid did not yet have any troubleshooting on this device, and neither did Amazon, so I got a replacement. This time, the coffee took around 30 seconds to go through as expected for a hard tamp, and I was able to dial in the right tamp and grind to get a decent (if foamy) crema. Unfortunately, the espresso is still sour and tastes overextracted or not correctly brought to pressure and temperature. It is not undrinkable, at least. Sadly, the result with nice freshly ground beans is significantly worse than cheap third-party Nespresso pods and not in the same realm as other semi- or super-automatic machines. I'm sure some modding could be done, but I would not expect to do that on a machine in this price range. I was very excited to try out this machine and am just left wondering what went wrong.
