  • Entry into the world of coffee
Color: Espresso Black Matte Style: Espresso
KitchenAid Semi-automatic espresso machine is one of the small size espresso machine in its class that our family have ever owned. We had Breville, Calphalon , De’Longhi machines that are huge and took more counter space on our kitchen. The compact design and ease of use brings espresso-making into the home with professional quality. What’s in the box: Espresso Machine with water tank, Stainless Tamper, Milk Pitcher, Portafilter(58mm), Steam Wand, 4 filter baskets (single wall 1 shot, single wall 2 shot, double wall 1 shot, double wall 2 shot), Milk Frother attachment. Packaging is top notch. Every part is individually wrapped and the machine is double wrapped with plastic and cloth bag. Took few minutes just to unpack before setup and very impressed. Set up is very simple. Just rinse all the removable parts before first use and fill the water tank with fresh water(distilled or mineral water is not recommended per instructions), insert the steam wand if not using automatic milk frother attachment. Select your filter basket to your choice and press into the portafilter, add coffee (pre-ground or freshly ground), tap the portafilter to level using tamper and insert it to the machine until its locked. Toggle the mode button to select espresso and select the number of shots (1 or 2) and press on button to make your espresso. Machine takes less than 45 seconds to preheat due to its fast-heating thermocoil technology and this is fast considering most home espresso machines took much longer that I owned. This machine offers a lot to at-home baristas during this work from home situations and for anyone who is new to making espresso with its ease of use. This semi-automatic machine is fast with its startup, heating and automatic milk frother attachment and is the first residential espresso machine that features dual, smart temperature sensors. Like professional espresso machines this machine has 15-bar pump to make a thick crema delicious coffee with the automatic temperature control. Automatic Milk Frother Attachment that is included with this is for anyone who likes to froth the milk automatically or for hot milk. Tried using this attachment and prefer to use the wand for single cup and would use the attachment if making coffee for guest of 3 or 4 and will come handy during that time considering the cleanup after usage. Its very easy to setup. Just fill the milk tank with max of 17oz with the cold milk or you can also directly immerse the hose to any container or cup or bottle with milk. Align the steam wand of attachment to the machine, adjust the function knob to froth function and toggle on the espresso machine to steam mode and press the on/play button on machine. Froth level adjustment can be done by rotating the knob on the top of the attachment for variable micro-foam and texture. Taste of espresso that this machine makes is great and depends on the type of coffee ground and personal preferences. This machine has filter basket for fresh ground whole bean coffee (single wall) and pre-ground coffee(double wall). The portafilter is heavy and is flat which makes tampering good unlike other competitor brands. Pros: Small footprint/ compact targeted for basic entry barista skill level for use at home, removable/adjustable steam wand for milk texturing, removable drip tray, automatic milk frothing attachment, 4 filter basket, heavy duty tamper. Cons : Cleanup of milk frother is little time consuming, smaller water tank capacity, no stainless finish for its price point. Overall, recommend this for any coffee lover who is looking for reliable espresso machine with automatic milk frother for home use at professional result. ... show more

  • Nice Entry Level Espresso Machine ( Lessons Learned - What you should know!)
Color: Black Style: Metal Espresso
Buying this machine was my first step into the world of espresso. From my experience, there is a bit of a learning curve with espresso, milk steaming, and this machine in particular. You'll need some time, patience, and maybe a few extra accessories to get the most out of it. After a few months of pulling inconsistent (sour/bitter) shots and watching a lot of videos, I am finally able to make some tasty drinks with this machine. Overall, I am satisfied with the KitchenAid machine for the price point. I'd recommend purchasing one, but wait for a sale. Lessons Learned: Grinder/Beans - To get the most out of this machine, you will want to have a nice burr grinder (> $100) and a scale. It will take a little bit of tweaking to dial in the correct grind size for your beans. My OXO grinder has worked okay, but I wish it had a bit more nuance with the finer espresso settings. I pre weigh my beans (18-18.5 grams) on a scale before grinding. I usually need to shake and restart the grinder to get all of grinds out. I've personally had much better results with medium-dark roast coffee (Illy, Peet's) than the specialty light-medium roast coffee that I use for pour-over/drip coffee. Use freshly roasted beans for the best results. Puck Prep - While the included tamper is fairly nice, I found that my puck prep was creating the greatest inconsistency. I had a hard time getting the grinds evenly distributed/flat and I'd often spill some of my grinds while prepping. My finished puck would sometimes turn out soupy or I could very clearly see evidence of channelling in the puck. I eventually decided to order a few accessories to help with my puck prep and they have been a game-changer! Now every puck is perfect, the espresso tastes much better, and my group head is staying much cleaner! I purchased a 58mm Espresso Tamper Set (Spring-loaded Tamper, Adjustable Depth Distributor Leveler, Magnetic Dosing Funnel, Reusable Puck Screen) and a 9 x 0.40mm WDT Tool on Amazon (linked below and pictured). Both are fairly inexpensive. KitchenAid should consider including tools like these in the box (and adjust the price as needed) because it make a huge difference with your end result. My opinion of the machine and experience completely changed after using the extra puck prep tools. - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCKWXPKP?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CC248XG1?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details Water/Temp - One of the first things I adjusted when I got the machine was the water temp. I turned mine to the hottest setting (see manual). I found the default setting was not hot enough. Before I pull a shot, I typically run a cycle of water without the portafilter attached. This gives me a chance to warm up my glass/cup and make sure the group head is warm and clear of any grinds. Some people recommend pre-warming the portafilter as well for best results. I also run a cycle of water after pulling my shot to keep the group head clean. Milk Steaming - This has also taken a lot of practice and I still have a ways to go with my latte art, but I feel like I've recently turned a corner. The steam wand is probably the weakest part of the machine. It is not super powerful, uses one hole, and requires the most skill/technique. I'd recommend using whole milk and I've personally been able to texture the milk better when using less than the recommended amount of milk in the pitcher. You'll want to watch some videos to get a better handle on the technique, but keep in mind most people are using more powerful steam wands in their videos. ... show more

  • Lovely introductory espresso machine
Color: Black Style: Metal Espresso
This espresso machine is marvelous and one I found to be easy to use as an introduction to espresso machines. It heats the coffee grounds evenly, the coffee is bold and lively tasting, and you get great crema. My one and only qualm with the machine is the steamer wand as it’s insanely loud and ear piercing, but you only have to bear it for a few moments. It does, thankfully, steam milk marvelously despite the jarring sounds. ... show more

  • I expected more out of KitchenAid
Color: Black Matte Style: Espresso Machine
This espresso machine does not brew quality espresso. I had been using a simple mr coffee one for years and I wanted to upgrade and decided to go with this one. I really like that it has a water storage in it and I can disconnect the steamer piece after using this for about five months. It has made me so frustrated at times and I like to remove the steamer piece so that I can run another water and wash it by hand instead of wiping it down every time and it is hard to put back in over time. Aside from that and the most important thing is that the coffee grounds still have water left in them so there is a lack of pressure in the machine and I have to scrape out the coffee instead of smacking out a puck of coffee grounds like you should from an espresso machine , super disappointed, and I expected more out of a KitchenAid appliance. ... show more
