Pros" Very solidly built. Comes with two different length handles. The edge is actually kinf of sharp. These is a 'safety ring' and mounting hardware inclused. Finish is nice. Looks good. Cons: Needs to be mounted on something to work properly. The two mounting bases with the holes are 3" wide so you will need something at least 4" wide to bolt it to. Setting on the ground will render this almost useless although you could use a 2' long 2"x4" 2' piece of wood to mount it to so it isn't setting directly on the ground. Kind of sketchy but still better than setting it on the ground. Keep in mind that this is to make kindling. It's not for chopping cord wood. Light duty only. Overall, I kind of like it. Good quality and a good bargain.

First use of a small piece of dry wood and the handle cracked. I did not even have the extended handle on. Unfortunately I bought it and did not use it until after the return window had expired. To seller. If you want to make this right please send me a new unit.

Missed the softwood recommendation. Splits 2×4 scraps pretty easy. Hardwood nope.

This looks and feels like something you might find at mountain cabin attached to a tree and which would make you wonder what they use it for until you are shown. What it does is use mechanical advantage and a sawtooth base which accommodates various length of wood to easily turn cut wood into kindling. It's made of heavy steel and the lever is adjustable to give you the advantage you need. While it takes some effort to use, it is a nice addition to the area by your wood pile and is great for taking chopped cord wood and splitting it further into kindling. You will NOT be able to split a log with this--not even small one because it is not designed to do that and doesn't have the beef. You DO need to fasten this to something sturdy--a 6x6 post, a tree trunk or possibly a stump would work well. You can't use this without mounting it first. It seems of another time, not modern in any way and it is kind of fun to use once you understand what its limitations are.

I was not able to cut the wood as easy as the video showed. Even with the extended handle and hardware secured in place I could do a pull up on this handle and it would just be really unsafe.

I mounted this on the side of the woodshed my wife built for kindling. It works great for splitting small (<3" diameter) dry branches and logs. The steps for holding different lengths of log works well, although sometimes the blade will push the log out instead of digging in. You have to get the angle right or get it started on an edge sometimes. The splitter works great on dry wood. The wet, or recently downed trees (even the dead ones that were taken down) were a little struggle to split. Some had to be split on one end then turned over to get the other half. Still, it worked better than trying to beaver them apart with your own teeth. This kindling splitter will ease the kindling splitting work. It seems sturdy and built to last. There is a safety loop that slide over the handle to keep it in the closed position. The description says "portable". I suppose it is if you mount it on a short 4x4. You would have to secure that 4x4 with something though, or maybe set it horizontal on the tailgate? Mounted on the side of the woodshed, this splitter works well for its intended use. Don't expect to be Paul Bunyon though.
