I needed a suitable helm for my pirate ship sandbox project. This one did very nicely. The nubs are just big enough to give the impression of a ships helm but not long enough to catch on anything or poke anybody's eye. The package came with 4 items: The plastic wheel, a 3" Nickle-plated Lag Screw, a washer and a little yellow cap to cover the lag screw in the center of the wheel. I am a little concerned about the strength of the plastic at the center of the wheel. If this breaks, that is the weak point. I wanted to attach it snugly yet still have it able to be rotated but with some resistance, so it's not going to spin. I added a wide flat washer to the post side of the wheel to give it a little bit of clearance. That seemed to do the trick. I probably should have replaced the washer that came with this product and gone up a little on the outer diameter of the washer so that the washer covered the entire flat area of the mounting hole to give it more resistance from getting torn off if someone pulls themselves up using the wheel. We screwed a flat circular wood piece from home depot into the wall stud then screeed this wheel Into the center of the wood piece. Kids love it.

My son loves this “pirate ship wheel”! The only complaint, if I had to be picky is that the screw for it is so long. Maybe it’s just our playset but it doesn’t have big chunks of wood to place the wheel. We had to use a saw and cut the screw down so our son wouldn’t get injured on the sharp end.
