I have a small sound reinforcement company in northern California. After a lot of research centered on performance vs. price, these fit the bill the best. I own several models of smaller format speakers to use as fills and monitors to go with my larger venue system. What puts this speaker out in front of other more common 2-way portable speakers is the high frequency driver. Most lower cost speakers have a 1" throat exit for the horn. The size of this exit is what really determines how much output you can get from the speaker in the vocal range and how well it's going to cut in a noisy environment. Large format pro PA systems generally have horn exits with 1.5" to 2" throats. This allows the horn to get louder and often go lower in frequency to keep most the vocal range coming from one source instead of handing the critical part of it to the woofer which can't "throw" it as well as horn can. This JBL model incorporates a 1.5" exit horn married to a high output high frequency compression driver with a 3" diaphragm. Many speakers in this price range and all that are lower cost models the are popular only have the 1" exit horns coupled to a compression driver with only a 1.2" to 2" diaphragm. They just can't get as loud or sound as clear if you need more output than average. This speaker has a lot of feature in it, many of which the average use won't need. But the output capability is what's key, at least for me. These can get loud and they sound good. As far as the advance feature of being able to connect them to an ethernet network to do extensive EQ/tuning, that can come in very handy if you intend to mount or fly the speakers in a permanent install. You can monitor their status and tweak them to your heart's content. The handles are nice and large, easy to grip though I would have preferred if the side handles had vertical holds instead of horizontal to make it a bit easier to lift them onto stands. These aren't light speakers, and they are a bit awkward for getting up to head height due to handle orientation for a single person lift. I'd also recommend some lift assisted stands, either crank up or pneumatic, since they weigh almost 60 lb. Now onto what separates this from a model at 2x the price. First thing I noticed is the quality of the metal grill. It's pretty flimsy. I purchased several units at once. One has a good sized dent in the grill even though the shipping box (not very sturdy either) wasn't damaged. But something bumped into the box and dented the grill. Definitely not a grill you want musicians to put their feet on or stand on when used as a floor monitor (yes, they do that sometimes). The other other issue is that there's no protection of the relatively delicate DSP controls on the back of the speaker. I'm going to have to come up with some type of guard to protect the controls during transport, manly the rotary encoder knob. I can see that getting damaged pretty easily. You will definitely will want to purchase covers for these. Either the overpriced JBL covers or ones by Tuki. The higher end JBL VP and other series speaker have over these would be an ever larger size 4" diaphragm high frequency compression driver and more sturdy build. But you do pay a premium for that. These are the best "bang for the buck" out there. Good output, tons of features. Better grills and protection for the controls would have brought the 5 star rating. I bought these speakers since they came out but not from amazon i got them from agiprodj,and i been using these on my gigs(indoor/outdoor) no problems 7 hours+ and they sound fantastic they wont distort at loud volumes like other speakers i heard and owned..on the back it has many settings for your crossover points 80hz,100hz,120hz,if you plan on using a sub the only part i dont like so far is that to access all the dsp eq you need to get the app(which is free) for ipad,or get the software for the computer,also network cables...for some people its ok but for some they dont like putting more cables.... Pros- Loud clear Good bass Comfortable handles Handle on the top of speaker Durable material Cons- Need wireless router,android tablet/ipad or software to access dsp,eq Pretty expensive If you have any questions feel free to comment and see if i can help you out =) ... show more
