I received this speaker today. First, there is nothing about it that reveals that it is "refurbished" (except, perhaps, the plain brown JBL box in which its delivered). It sounds just fine. I've owned a half dozen bluetooth battery driven portable speakers. This may be the best of the lot, but there is nothing breathtaking about it. Usually, JBL has pretty zingy highs (my experience with JBL going back to 1958), but this speaker is fairly neutral. It is a fine speaker and I look forward to using it in many venues. It has more volume than the other speakers I own (or have owned) and, in that context, will be very welcome when using it as a teaching aid in classes I teach. I listen, principally, to classical music which almost never "thumps" as modern rock does -- so whether those passive bass radiators deliver anything unusual is hard to tell. Piano, violin, woodwinds, or voice all sound very natural. This is the largest and best quality bluetooth speaker I have owned. I'm not complaining a bit. It's just not breathtaking. On YouTube one reviewer lists it among the top 5 bluetooth speakers...I'd need to listen to the other 4 to know if that actually has merit. But for it's price (I don't have a B&W budget!!) I'm happy. ============ Addendum It's more impressive than originally perceived. It has a fullness of sound (enhanced by better bass response) that exceeds the other four Bluetooth speakers I own. I used it while in my hot tub last night. It didn't get wet or fall in but the volume was loud enough to get over the substantial noise of the jets on high. Construction is excellent. Upgrading starts from 4 to 5. (I'll still reserve the "breathtaking" adjective for those ridiculous $25K speakers they love in Britain.) ============= Addendum II In 1958 when consumer stereo got going I went into a specialty shop that sold "component" stereo and LP albums...only. These were popping up here and there as the world moved from the Magnavox Radio-Phonograph of the '40s and early '50s to high performance stereo gear. I auditioned speakers one afternoon with the owner. I was 14 and he was my "coach" in matters stereo. After listening to a half dozen pairs of speakers which included AR, Electro-Voice, and JBL, I decided that a pair of JBL's were my favorites and my aspiration...being way outside the price range of a 14 year old. The same characteristics which drew me to JBL in 1958 still draw me to this little speaker which is now, far and away, my favorite portable speaker of the many I've owned.

I recently purchased my JBL Charge 3 speaker with the intent to mount it on my golf cart. However, after purchasing it, I realized that there are much more uses than just my golf cart application. My family and I recently went on vacation to Florida. The JBL Charge 3 was an amazing addition to our beach experience. The sound quality is second to none; backing that quality is the durability that I've come to expect from JBL. The sand and water had no effect on the appearance of the finish or the sound quality. The original use for the speaker was to be mounted behind my golf cart windshield as a removable stereo. It functions flawlessly in this role as well. I have had no issues with the battery life or sound quality. I golf 18-27 holes fairly regularly and this speaker has not disappointed me in any way. My concern was that the sound would not be loud enough or of a very high quality in an outdoor environment. I am very glad that my assumptions were wrong. I would recommend this speaker for any number of situations. It is very portable and fairly light. I recommend getting a piece of velcro for the back and bottom of the speaker so that it can be easily mounted in areas where it will be sitting for an extended period of time. This will ensure that the speaker will not slide around or fall off of the surface that it is on.

I was a little weary of this product because I have never spent more than $40 on a portable speaker. I have had two different portable speakers (Sound Kick Soundfreaq and Photive PH-BTW55) and I have enjoyed both of them. I usually take them to the park when I go play basketball and I usually have to play them at full volume to be able to hear while I'm playing. Dribbling the basketball, hitting the rim and shoes squeaking on the floor usually compete with the sound of the speaker making it difficult to hear outside of a 10' radius. I did some extensive research on this speaker and even heard comparisons via YouTube, but that is always different than what you hear in person. I decided to bite the bullet and just buy it and man am I glad I did. The first thing that got my attention when I unpacked it was the weight and solid feeling of it. I was quite a bit heavier than I expected. After the initial charging, I immediately got chills when hitting the power button and hearing the "on" tone and the rich deep bass sound that it produced. This was just from turning it on! I grabbed my phone and connected it (which was beyond easy and fast) and went right to my library looking for the right song to hear, like a kid on Christmas morning looking for the right first present to open. Megadeth's Holy Wars...The Punishment Due was right the track. I played it and I was blown away immediately by the bass drums sounding so clear and pounding, while the guitars screamed with clarity and force. I finally understood where the extra money I spent was being put towards. My next test was to hit the basketball courts by my house. I placed the speaker where I normally do and the sound was so loud that I couldn't put it on full volume so as not to disturb the elderly couple having a picnic in the field about 75 yards away. AWESOME! I really recommend this to anyone who can afford it, because if you really enjoy music and use a portable speaker as much as I do, then you'll not regret spending the extra money on the JBL Charge 3!
