  • Download the software for best performance
I was very close to returning this but changed my mind once I figured out the software... At first I was not impressed. I did not notice any improvement in sound quality. Thought it was just plug-and-play and that was it but turns out it's not a complete out-of-the-box experience. It will still function as a sound device and detect properly but it will sound pretty much like an average sound device and feel like a waste of money. First go to Creative's site and search for the drivers. There are 2 parts. The BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro and the X-Plus Configurator G1. The installer looks like something from Windows 98 but somehow it still works. Install the BlasterX first, then install the Configurator. Open the X-Plus Configurator and set it to "Generic" if you're on a PC. This will allow you to experience the full potential. To verify, you can open the BlasterX app and test the settings out. ... show more

  • Undeniable upgrade
At the sale price, this is an absolutely amazing piece of technology. It simply works, does what it says, unlocks some basic audio tuning, and vastly outperforms the onboard audio on my outdated but not low-end motherboard. The dongle itself is constructed of the usual materials, only setting itself apart with the red "X" that lights up while plugged in. It is alarmingly light, but don't let it deter you from the quality of sound it outputs. I'm no audiophile; I'm sure this leaves something to be desired for the hardcore aficionados of sound, but even my average ears picked up the increase in richness, deeper lows and sharper highs. The accompanying software is bare but functional, my preference for software, and seems to work well. It even has a voice effects feature for your microphone that seems more of an afterthought than a genuine tool but the novelty is worth noting. The EQ works well and the different audio effects do impact the sound in noticeable ways. I am not keen on the virtual 5.1 or 7.1 sound features but I also do not have headphones that even pretend to offer surround features. Connecting to Discord my friends immediately noted how much better my voice sounded and I was also able to get more volume out of the headset itself on the call. Listening to music went from pleasent to engaging, both the increased volume and the broader range of sound brought more to my usual playlists. Gaming is improved too: things sound more genuine and details are preserved, worlds sound more alive and I can pick out audio queues much quicker. The scout mode that's advertised went untested for me, I couldn't get the hotkeys to work and I didn't like the sound of keeping it enabled, however it was functional in the tests I tried with it on. It feels more like a specifically tuned EQ setting more than anything. Overall, this is absolutely hands down a win for me, and I recommend it strongly to anyone looking for improved audio on any system. I'm sure you could pair a high end sound card with a quality amp and get some mind blowing sound, but for someone who just wants sounds to sound like they ought to, this is it, especially for the price. ... show more

  • Works flawlessly
I haven’t used all of what it can do, but for PS4 it’s worlds perfectly so far, no issues. Sounds quality is good, no extra controls for my application.

  • Very happy
My sound card went out on my laptop. This Sound Blaster actually sounds better. Really is plug and play.

  • What you'd expect for ~$30 USB Sound Card & More software difficulties
Pros: - Decent audio effects provided by the "BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro" - Contrary to what is advertised, I did receive an audio splitter in the box that separates microphone and headphone inputs (albeit whatever I plug into the splitter does not fully recess into the plug and I end up losing an audio channel on the headphone side) - The product works great as a plug & play solution - I did not notice any hissing noises that were mentioned by others - Audio meets the expectations that a typical user might have Cons: - The device will occasionally fail to output sound, which can sometimes be solved by reconnecting the device, but that sometimes end up with another issue (mentioned below) that I have to completely reinstall drivers just to get the device to output sound again. - The USB cable is far too short, might be fine on laptop, but on a desktop you need an extension somewhere (should probably bundle a decent USB extension cable with this) - Various software hitches that I mention below (I'll briefly summarize some of them here) > Defaults to 16bit, 44100Hz audio format, with no option to change without installing additional software > Included ASIO drivers don't work, I had to install from another site > The "BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro" software does have a bug where muting the microphone monitoring capability ends up muting the audio playback. I'd assume that most of the cost associated with this product is mainly to pay for the software-side of things rather than the physical components. With that being said, the software features are all right, you have the usual binaural audio capabilities coupled with other effects to "enrich" your audio. However, there are a few things to consider: - Out of the box, the sound card defaults to the 16bit, 44100Hz format in Windows with no option to change the format because it is greyed out. I spent probably 30 minutes to find out that I need to install another piece of software, not included in the driver, to configure the product to be able to work up to advertised audio formats. I don't know why Creative and their infinite wisdom decides to not include this software (X-Plus Configurator) with their driver, or do they specify that you specifically need this piece of software to give you the option in Windows. - Another thing is that this sound card does add a small amount of audio latency compared to built-in audio or display output audio. In my limited testing with Windows, even using the ASIO audio drivers, the sound card could not outperform (latency-wise) the built-in audio or the digital audio from my graphics card using WDM audio drivers. It was on par with MME drivers instead [I tested with the Realtek onboard audio, and the digital audio output from my graphics card into my monitor with built-in DAC]. - Although it is not strictly advertised, this product does support ASIO audio drivers, and the USB ASIO driver does come bundled with the drivers. But the included ASIO drivers are complete hogwash and don't work properly. I had to download the working drivers from an outside source to have proper ASIO support. - In my experience, sometimes when I disconnect and reconnect the device, it would completely stop functioning. While the red 'X' on the device lights up and Windows detects that it is functioning, there will be no audio output unless I either completely reboot through a full restart (full shutdown and then reboot), or I completely reinstall audio drivers. - The "BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro" software does have a bug where muting the microphone monitoring will also mute audio output entirely, even though there is a separate button to mute the audio playback (not a big deal as I can just 'mute' by setting the volume to 0%). - If you use the device with its WDM or ASIO drivers, it will completely bypass the audio effects that the "BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro" applies. This means that the EQ, Acoustic Engine, and Scout Mode will not work. This is fine as most applications simply use the MME driver instead. ... show more
