This is an excellent overall bed and way better than the overpriced ikea versions which went up almost $200 recently. Bed assembly uses captured nuts and bolts that pass completely through the main supports. The bed itself is very sturdy. I would suggest only buying at the largest a 8-10 inch matress. Any bigger and the side rails will not be as effective at prevent rolling out of the loft. My only complaint of the bed itself is that the legs should have had a lower support beam on the short ends and there should have been screw adjustable feet so that the bed can be leveled. The short end beams would support the top half from taking stress when moving the bed. You will need to shim the bed (i suggest vinyl flooring samples) so that it is level and doesn't move. The staircase is good and bad. The assembly is much more complicated and in some cases the screws are just too short to provide structure. I was assembling the steps, when the pre-drilled spacer came out of the wood in my hands. The screws just pulled out because they were too shallow. Overall everthing construction wise is great. My biggest complaint is connecting the staircase to the bed which is by far the worst part of this design. It is just not well thought out. Instead they should have a lower and middle short end cross beams and pass bolts through the staircase sides through these beams. Instead you secure a small wall piece with tiny wood screws, then screw it to the side of the stairs with thise same little wood screws. On the back you install L brackets 3 of them with the same short wood screws. Its not great and damages the surface if you ever wish to change the orientation of the staircase as well as not providing any support for the units together. If you move the bed it may be in your best interest to detach the stairs or risk pulling out all of the screws. ... show more

Purchased this bed for my son and he loves it. Its a good quality solid wood. The drawers are also good quality. I didn't realize how low the area underneath was, I'm 5'10 and my head hits the bed when sitting under it. My son is just a little too tall to stand under it as well but he's perfectly happy sitting or crawling in his fort. This bed is heavy so plan to have help getting the 3 boxes into your house. Assembly was straight forward but you will need 2 people to save your sanity. ... show more

My son bought this bed for my granddaughter as she had outgrown her junior bed. We had seen something similar in a store close by, but the price was excessive and it didn't even come with a mattress {this one also does not come with a mattress}. The material of the bed is old wood, not composite, but real wood. It did take some time assembling the bed but it was worth it when my granddaughter opened her bedroom door and saw her bed. There is so much space for storage in this bed. The added space in the drawers {on the stairs} is amazing. The play space under the bed can hold a lot of toys, my granddaughter playing and also myself. I can't say enough good things about the bed.
