    • Removes scale from tankless water heater

At first I was skeptical this would work, but it actually cleaned out lots of scale from my tankless water heaters, saving me thousands of dollars. Backstory: My two tankless water heaters are 13 years old, and they hadn't been flushed (descaled) in at least 5 years. I was going to descale them with vinegar, but all plumbers said there's a good chance that would expose a hole in the heat exchanger because the scale probably has eaten through the pipe by now. They would charge $600 to do a full service on both, but they couldn't guarantee they wouldn't leak afterward. Quotes for replacing the water heaters ranged from $4500 to $8000, depending on size and number. If I wanted to save my pipes and water heaters from scale from our very hard water, most plumbers recommended a whole-house water softener or water conditioner, which ranged in price from several hundred to up to $10,000 because I have a 2" pipe entering the house. And they said I probably should do that because replacing pipes can cost $20,000 if they get too much scale. So, when a plumber I trust mentioned this type of radio frequency device, saying he saw them remove loads of scale from a commercial boiler, I gave it a try. He wanted to charge $700 to install a similar device, so I bought my own Aqua-Rex WK1-E for $452 and installed it myself. I figured this purchase was much cheaper than any other option, and if there was a chance it works, it could save thousands of dollars. I found a published paper with evidence these work. See "Removal and/or prevention of limescale in plumbing tubes by a radio-frequency alternating electric field inductance device," by Georgiou, Bendos, Kalis, and Koutis (2018). I measured the flow rate out of the faucets in one bathroom and noticed only slightly improvement over the course of seven months. Then, I decided to check the sediment filter in the faucets, and found probably a tablespoon full of scale bits stuck behind the filter in the faucets in one of my bathrooms. It all just fell out as I unscrewed the filter from the faucet. Zoom in on the attached photo so see the black and green specks of scale. I showed 3 plumbers this photo, and they all agreed it was scale freed up from my tankless water heaters by the Aqua-Rex. I was so close to spending thousands on the water softener and replacing my water heaters before I gave this thing a try. Now I don't need to flush my water heaters, saving time and money. I don't have to replace my water heaters if they aren't getting corroded by scale. And I don't have to get a water softener or conditioner to try to save my pipes, which should be mostly free from scale now. To be clear, the Aqua-Rex will NOT soften your water. It will only prevent heavy buildup of scale inside your pipes. You may still get some scale on the outside of your faucets where the effect of this device stops, but you can clean these easily. Aside from this device, it's very hard to clear scale inside pipes. Most importantly, this device clears heavy scale inside your hot water heater, which extends its life and keeps it running efficiently. My wife said she noticed a slight improvement in the water softness and ability for soap to foam up, but I didn't notice anything. That's not the main benefit anyway. It's a shame more plumbers don't recommend these devices. I hate to say that they are incentivized to push customers towards expensive water treatment and frequent water heater replacement. Give this a try. Make sure you install it properly, or else it won't work.     • Beware of the hype
It was easy to install. It did seem to soften the water a bit, not drastically. Didn't do much about the scale build up, that seemed to get more noticeable in the toilets and shower heads. I guess for 500 bucks I shouldn't have expected what all the hype said it would do. It's weird how every time I do something like this the warranty has just expired or guarantee has timed out. So I'll keep it because I can't get my money back. Just don't believe all the hype. Look for long time user reviews because time will tell the truth, that's why I did this review. I have had the Aqua Rex unit in my house for just a few weeks. I use to have a traditional water softener that required bags of salt from Lowe’s. Now I get the same benefits and I don’t notice a difference except for the gross slime feeling that went away. At first I was a little skeptical but after the first week I was impressed. I don’t have to scrub all my shower heads and faucet anymore. I have no white residue buildup like I did before. Thanks Guys very impressed. ... show more
