  • ONE AND A HALF STARS
What a ridiculous hassle! If you value your time and energy - and if you really want a unit that ALKALIZES your water -- then bypass this and look at a more expensive unit like TapMaster. In my research, it came down to this unit or the TapMaster Artesian Full Contact 7-stage, but I ultimately decided on this because of price. Three months after my purchase, I regret buying this and wish I had just spent the extra money on the TapMaster instead. Yes, there is supposed to be a 30-day money back guarantee, but we had some unexpected scheduling conflicts and didn't get it installed in that period of time. Now, while the company has sent us gratis extra filters to keep us happy, we are stuck with a system that does not do everything we bought it to do. So here are the SPECS of the system: The filter housing measures 18"h x 15"d x 5"w. The 3.2 gal storage tank is 11"w x 14"h. This particular model is made for normal water pressure so it does not come with a booster pump. Because of the UV light, it does require an electrical outlet, preferably one you can switch on and off. The PROS: 1. THE REVERSE OSMOSIS WORKS. I have not had the water lab-tested but can tell that the water is more pure because of how acidic it is after going through the system. Because we needed to drill through the countertop to plug in the UV light, we did not have the UV and alkalizing filter set up for the first couple weeks of use. So, it was effectively a 5-stage system. Without passing through the alkalizing filter, the purified water has a pH of 5.8 on litmus paper, which is what you would expect after removing most toxins and minerals, including calcium and magnesium. In comparison, my tap water was in the 6.4 to 6.6 range. Unfortunately, this acidic water also turned out to be a CON, because the alkalizing filter did not re-alkalize the water sufficiently to bump its pH into the alkaline range. The CONS: 1. Installing this system WITHOUT FULL INSTRUCTIONS is an exercise in guesswork! As other reviewers have stated, the instructions aren't sufficient and don't address the alkalizing and UV filters at all. My hubby is handy and figured it out but it took awhile. 2. NOT ALL THE PARTS WERE INCLUDED in the box, and one piece came damaged. Other pieces weren't high quality and had to be `doctored' in order to work. One of the factory-installed elbow connectors had a pin-hole leak in it. "We" (that's code for Hubby!) used one of the included replacement parts that came with the unit instead, but that needed a whopping 16 thicknesses of teflon tape to seal the joint! It is almost as if the joint wasn't even designed to fit at all. Of course in the process, my hubby had to take the joint apart 4 times to get the thickness right before it stopped leaking. He had also planned to install the tube inserts that were supposed to be included in the package, but they weren't. 3. DEALING WITH THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN A HEADACHE. The system wasn't fully functional right out of the box - though the company claimed in their emails to me that they have changed their packaging to better protect components - and it took numerous emails to get issues resolved. There seem to be only two customer service reps, and though they usually respond within 24hours, it is apparent that English is not their first language. They answer questions pretty well, but small grammar errors here and there indicate to me that they are based in China (where the system is manufactured). The system was a lower price when I first began asking customer service questions about the unit before purchasing it. I made the mistake of mentioning that I had just a few more questions before I purchased the unit. By the next morning, they had raised the Amazon price by ten dollars. So before I ordered, I asked them if they would match the lower price, and they agreed to refund the difference after the transaction. Two credit card statements later I still had not received the refund. It took two emails to finally get that cleared up. I had to email iSpring THREE times to finally get the missing tube inserts. Each time they responded and told me they would drop them in the mail. It took two emails before they sent the extra elbow fittings, but when they did they sent several extra. Another few emails before we had received the right replacement filters in lieu of a partial refund. WAY TOO MUCH TROUBLE! 4. Before use, the unit HAD TO BE FLUSHED MORE TIMES THAN INDICATED. After installation we immediately flushed the system for 10 minutes, before the tank had actually filled. After that, we emptied the tank five more times to flush it completely before we began drinking it. I did taste it during the third tank flush. It looked cloudy at first, but that was from air bubbles that settled. It tasted better than tap water but not yet as clean as the water we had been purchasing from our local grocery store's RO dispenser, so we continued with the flushes just to be on the safe side. It tasted clean enough to drink after five full tank flushes. 5. THE "ALKALIZED" WATER IS NOT, in fact, alkaline at all. Only one other reviewer (at the time of my purchase in 3/13) mentioned this, so I now have to assume that none of the other reviewers even tested the pH of their water. Other reviewers tested the TDS (total dissolved solids), but that really won't tell you enough since the alkaline filter should be adding calcium and magnesium back into the water, which will increase the TDS readings. The big problem here is that we spent extra money so that our everyday drinking and cooking water would be ALKALINE. That was the entire point of this system. I emailed the company beforehand to ask how much increase in alkalinity they guarantee. "Claudia" responded: "The Alkaline filter changes the acidic RO water into a perfect Natural Alkali Calcium Ionized Water. The Alkaline filter simply gives back minerals such as ionized calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium ion, which were taken away while purifying the water. The Alkaline filter is effective and give the water pH value of 8.00~9.00." As I wrote above, the 5-stage system produced water with a pH of 5.8 on litmus paper. The included alkaline filter did nothing at all to increase the pH. That is way too acidic to be drinking every day. I wrote the company, and they sent another "stronger" alkalizing filter. Instead of two chambers of pellets for the water to pass through, this new one had three. Okay, more hassle. We uninstalled the `old' alkalizing filter and reinstalled the new one. We tested its pH immediately and it was almost a perfect 7.0. When I filled my glass with the water, though, it was cloudy white. I let it sit on the counter and the white particles sank to the bottom, leaving a noticeable chalky layer at the bottom of the glass. So, we flushed the entire tank again until the water ran clear and have retaken the pH several times since. It is once again a very acidic 6.0, while the tap water is in the 6.4 to 6.6 range. See above for photos. I contacted iSpring and requested a full refund on the alkalizing portion of the unit. Since it is obvious that iSpring's "alkalizing" technology is useless, I wonder why they bother to guarantee it. Maybe they just hope that no one will actually test it and hold them accountable. I finally agreed to let them send me a year's supply of filter replacements in lieu of an alkalizer refund. They sent the less powerful alkalizing filter (we had expected to try another one to see if the one we installed was just `bad.'), so clearing that up took yet another email. By this time I was MAD. In response they sent me a box of 5 of the more powerful alkalizing filters - clorosex - which they tell me aren't even on the market yet. 6. THIS SYSTEM USES MORE WATER THAN YOU THOUGHT! We did not attach the drain hose to the sink drain because Texas is in drought, so there is NO way we are going to send wasted water down the drain. Instead, we planned to drain it into a rain barrel set-up outside the house to water the lawn and inedible flowers. For the first few weeks using the system, we didn't have the barrel system set up yet. So, in the meantime, we attached the store-bought clear tubing to the unit and drained the system into 5 gallon buckets in the kitchen, which we later emptied outside. This was where I was surprised. The description indicates that all iSpring units wastes about 2 gallons of waste water for every 1 gallon of purified water, but the ratio is at least 3:1. The waste water from refilling the 3.2 gallon tank filled two 5 gallon orange Home Depot buckets near to overflowing. This was consistent for the six times that we refilled the tank before attaching the tube to the barrel set-up. 7. Other reviewers indicated that if THE UV LIGHT is left on all the time the water flowing from the light into the faucet will be too hot to drink at first. I believe this is true for all UV RO systems, so we decided to simply plug the UV cord into a switched outlet. Our kitchen is an outdated 1950's model, and we only have one electrical outlet in the space to start with. So, in order to plug in the UV power cord, we had to drill a hole in the countertop to string the power cord through. Another appliance covers the hole, and the UV light is now plugged into a power strip that I switch on and off when I need to use the appliances there. We plan to remodel soon, and the countertop is icky 1950's formica, so no loss there! 8. Another reviewer indicated that the combination of a chemical in the storage tank and the UV light is creating a SMELLY, TOXIC CHEMICAL REACTION IN THE WATER - "butyl mercaptan, the same chemical that odorizes natural gas." (comment on 3/15/13 review) Originally, we were not having this problem since we the water we were drinking was not sitting in the storage tank for any large amount of time. Every few days, I was filling a new 3 gallon bottle to fit on our cooler. Most recently, though, I filled several of these bottles at once, so the remaining water sat in the storage tank for a few weeks before I needed to fill another bottle for the cooler. Now, the water that has been sitting in the storage tank for awhile is passing the UV filter and it stinks as it comes out of the faucet. ... show more

  • Great water, but lots of hassles and leaks
tl;dr It works great, but installation and maintenance hassle make it a nightmare. It's also physically huge. Service is fantastic. Almost all the water my family drinks comes from the refrigerator, so I wanted to install this behind there. Way more hassle than I imagined. It makes the fridge stick out about 6" extra. Part of this is the piece of wood behind the metal bracket, because the bracket doesn't have the standard 16" and 24" on center screw holes, and drywall anchors just won't hold the weight. Also, the tank has to sit on top of the fridge or it adds another 8" of fridge sticking out. This is a non-standard installation, but I can't believe I'm the first one to do this. The installation instructions aren't bad, but they're still a bit hard to follow at points. The external hoses are color coded, which make installation a bit simpler. The water tastes really good when you're done with the install and the filter is working like it should. Now, the bad. Though the external connection hoses are color coded, all the internal hoses are white, which makes installation of the 4th stage (the RO filter) and all following stages difficult. Don't screw up, because for some reason the supplied hoses are ever so slightly different sized than the hardware store's 1/4 polyethylene tubing. If you have to replace a hose, do yourself a favor and buy the push connectors for either side as well. It'll save you a trip back to the store. All the internal connections on stages 4-7 are 90 degree fittings. While this saves a marginal amount of space, it makes it difficult to cut the tubing to the right size, line the 90 degree fittings up to one another, and fit them together while trying to snap them into the jumble of other filters. If you don't get them lined up nearly perfectly, expect leaks. Also, while trying to align the jumble and push the fittings together, you're likely to kink one of the supplied hoses. That also causes leaks. When changing the filters, you have to pull the hoses out of the push connectors (don't lose those tiny blue horseshoe clips) so you can unscrew the plastic 90 degree adapters. The hoses don't have an unlimited lifespan, and when they're done, it causes leaks. Not enough teflon tape on the NPT fittings (threaded part of the 90 degree adapters) causes leaks, as does wrapping the teflon tape the wrong way. Also, it's quite easy to cross thread the fittings while taking them off an old filter and putting them on a new filter, which causes major leaks and a trip to the hardware store again. Hopefully you didn't mess up the filter threads, too. The filters seem to perform well. The carbon filters create a good amount of carbon dust when new, as should be expected, and need to be rinsed and flushed or they will destroy your RO filter membrane. Stage 1 and 3 filters don't really fit onto the nubs in the top or bottom of the filter housing. This makes it a little more difficult to trust they're installed right. One of my brand new Stage 1 filters I installed got crimped in the wrong place, and needed to be replaced before ever being used. My tips: I've found it easiest to leave the plastic sleeve with the label on the polishing filter and the alkaline cartridge, because it gets confusing when you're trying to put the jumble back together and can't remember which way the water is flowing. I cut long hoses that arc over the top of the filters, so all water flows left to right thru the filter, and right to left thru the tubing. It makes my brain happier and less likely to explode, and easier to align the right angle connectors (just point them both in the same direction). This is different than iSpring does it. I bought several inline dual TDS meters for installation between the stages, so I can see how well each stage is performing. At first I only had one at the inlet and after the RO filter, but more data is never a bad thing. They're super easy to install, especially with the rainbow arc installation method. I installed a valve as a drain between the 3rd stage and the RO filter, to make it easy to flush the carbon filters after changing, after fouling an expensive RO filter. I marked all the fittings and hoses that came with the filter kit, so I know which ones came with the kit and which I've purchased separately. It helps me keep everything matched, and saves me from replacing unnecessary things in the quest to do anything to this system without causing leaks. The whole system needs to be flushed annually. iSpring doesn't provide any instructions for this. I pulled stage 1-4 filters out and washed the housings with soap and water, removed the polishing filter, and left the mineralization cartridge becasue it was easier. Filled the Stage 1 housing 1/4 with unscented bleach, screwed all the filter housings on, ran the water to get all the air out, then waited an hour for the chlorine to work. Also, the tank needs to be drained monthly as part of routine maintenance. The tank is easiest to drain by shutting it off, disconnecting it, then carrying it to the sink and opening the valve. Finally, to help cure the jumble, I designed and printed clips like the ones that hold the RO filter (with a screw), but sized for the other filters. They're posted on Thingiverse. iSpring doesn't carry such things. Haven't installed them yet, but now I can rid myself of the jumble when I find myself with lots of extra time and motivation. I can't speak for the UV filter. I got so frustrated with the rest of the system, I never hooked it up. I say I wouldn't buy this again, but given that all other systems have the same design issues, I would probably end up buying this again. Everything about it is a hassle, but you can never go back once you're accustomed to good water. I would definitely buy something again. ISpring customer service is great. My tank failed under warranty. They sent me easy to follow troubleshooting steps, then replaced the faulty part quickly. That makes me very happy, and is worth an extra star from me. ... show more

  • Water tastes great and great customer service
I purchased this RO system after comparing this system to others on Amazon. Ultimately I decided on the UV system which I didn’t need because I’m not on a well. After installing my system I registered my product and spoke with John who was very helpful in registering my product and explaining when the UV system is needed and when it is not. He suggested only using it when there is a boil notice in effect which I am now did. Couldn’t be happier with my system and with the customer service from John. Our tds prior to install was 250 ppm and after it is about 38ppm. ... show more
