So this is my second robot vacuum - the other being the fantastic Shark PowerDetect, which I've had for almost a year now. Both have their quirks and strengths, and while I think the Powerdetect is probably the better robot vac, I think the Max 705 trades blows with it very, very well. I did have a few issues with it early on, but since then it's been nothing but reliable. I'll talk a little more about some of the issues a little later in the review, for now I wanted to bring up some of the positives. First things first, setup is very easy. After about 5 minutes of prep, I was ready to start mapping the house, and 30 minutes later I was good to start cleaning. Easy. As for the vacuum itself, I love its simple, elegant look. The multi-textured black plastic with bronze lettering is so minimalist and handsome. It looks so much nicer than any other robot vac available. As for the performance, it has all the nice tech I like to see, Auto-charge, Auto-empty, LIDAR, and a very capable app. One of the things I hate the most about the Shark Powerdetect app is that you can't schedule the vac to clean specific rooms on different days, which is such a dumb restriction. That is not an issue with the Roomba app and I can schedule the Max 705 to clean any room on any day that I want. Love that. So during my initial testing, I did run into a few issues. I had originally set the robot vacuum to run Friday at noon, so that it would finish by late afternoon, but it ended up running Friday at the stroke of midnight. Now, it's possible that I accidentally selected 12 midnight instead of 12 noon in the app... I doubt I did, but it's always a possibility. You schedule through the app on a 24-hour clock, so I would've had to selected 2400 Thursday or 0000 Friday to get it to run when it did... which again, I doubt I did that. Besides that, I also had a bit of trouble with the app on my first cleaning run. Every time I wanted to open the app to check on the progress of the robot vac, it would bring up the nonexistent breakdown of that midnight run, which I had canceled. I believe this glitch was causing the robot vac to act weird, because during this time, the Max 705 would pause its cleaning run every 10 minutes or so. This would force me to open the app, get rid of the previous run's breakdown, and manually tap to continue the run... which was extremely annoying. That breakdown screen did eventually stop appearing, and the robot vacuum never paused again. So yeah, I'm going to chalk it up to a simple glitch... one that I hope not to see again. Aside from that, I've had no issues with any other cleaning runs. TLDR - Had a few issues on my initial cleaning run, since then it's been solid. The media could not be loaded. If I could sum up this vacuum in one word it would be “wow”. From the design to function and everything in between, I’m blown away. The Roomba Max 705 is honestly just pretty to even look at. Which I know sounds weird for a vacuum. From there it continues to get better. The app was easy to navigate. I’ve had other Roomba’s in the past, my most recent is an essentials and the Max 705 blows it out of the proverbial water Nine times out of ten, I’d have to track down my old roomba after it lodged itself somewhere bizarre and remote. After unloading it, it would then proceed to spend the next 30 min of its battery life cleaning the same area over and over while trying to beach itself somewhere else obnoxious. Not so with the Max 705. It spent about 30 min mapping my first floor. Not once did it wedge itself under my sofa or behind an end table or between the wall and a shoe. After the initial map, it cleaned for the first time. I normally use my roomba as an “in between” vacuum. We have 3 cats and a dog (animals are my toxic trait). The roomba runs while I clean the kitchen and do other tasks, and then I always follow up with an upright vacuum cleaner. Usually that second upright vacuum yields a pretty full canister. After the first clean with the Max 705, I did my usual follow up. I hardly picked up anything at all. And what I did pick up, I’d bet one of my fur balls shed AFTER the Max 705 did its job. It’s run consistently over the last week and continues on this impressive path. I’m blown away at the quality, ease of use and just a job well done. The app allows you to tell it where to vacuum (or not), if you want it to be a regular, quick or deep clean, and perhaps my favorite feature - has a pet guard which disables the buttons on the vacuum itself. One of my cats has a nasty habit of turning our other roomba off if it comes near him. The price tag is definitely a hefty one but the old adage of getting what you pay for rings true with this purchase. My whole family can see the difference. Even my 10 year old commented on how gentle this one is. “It doesn’t slam into things like our other one!” And she’s right - there’s no awkward banging against cabinets, walls and table legs.
