  • The dream lens for dedicated ultra-wide landscape photographers, Almost!
Style: Nikon F
UPDATE (10/22/2019): I have had the pleasure of owning this lens for over 2 years now & want to update my review. Overall the image & lens quality are fantastic, pro quality, but unfortunately I ran into one major issue around the 1 1/4 year mark. Even after relatively light use the ring surrounding the front lens element randomly fell off one day when the lens was removed from my camera bag. The ring can be stuck back into place but still pops off periodically. While this doesn't appear to affect the lens quality or weather seal I expected the blackstone model to be durable enough to avoid issues like this. I am hoping Irix will fix the issue at no charge & will update when I hear back. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For me this lens surpasses all others as the ultimate choice for dedicated ultra-wide landscape photography and has been a dream come true for me! I've only ever owned nikon lenses before because in the past very few third party lenses could truly compete, however this new Irix lens definately meets the high image and build quality demands of professionals while removing feature that are generally not as important for landscape photography including autofocus and zoom ability. Its truly impressive how this lens manages to pack such quality into such a small price tag, the build quality is so solid that I fell like I'm carrying a lens that should cost $1000s. Appears better than most other pro lenses. The Iris even includes a couple very useful unique features like a gel filter insert on the rear of the lens (cheaper filters) and focus ring lock. The Irix's focus ring has a slightly higher resistance to movement when focusing compared with other lenses but provides the extra benefit of ensuring the ring doesn't move if accidentally bumped accidentally. I owned the Nikon 14-24 mm for over 5 years before the Irix which is a fantastic lens and the Irix's sharpness and overall image quality appear to be quite incredible for such a wide lens, they even appear to be slightly better than the nikon at 14 mm. The Irix is sharp from corner to corner even wide open and is near perfect between f/5.6-8. Even if nikon comes out with a suitable replacement someday I will probably just keep this lens as soon and autofocus are not features I use often for serious landscape photography. I have attached an image of the lens mounted to my nikon d750 as well as Three sample images: The 2x B&W images, aperture set to f/8, are part of my actual artwork portfolio while the color image of the pepper crop was taken during a work related excursion at f/4 ... show more

  • Amazing Value for Money - Blackstone Edition
Style: Canon EF
A lot going for this Lens. 11mm would be a start. Any Landscape photographer would love to have an Ultra-Wide Angle Lens in their arsenal. But for the longest time the choices have been discouraging, it was simply out of reach for a mere mortal. Now it's finally affordable. Second, Build-Quality is superb. No complaints there. Third, you can insert a gel filter at the base of the lens. Fourth, its size. It's good for such a super wide angle lens. Fifth, it's rectilinear with minimal distortion. Lightroom easily corrected it (yes, it means that LR has its profile already). I have only taken this Lens for a spin just once and I am attaching some photos I took with it. I gave the IQ only 4 stars but it should be around 4.5. Is it sharp? You bet. But really for me it's the overall rendition it gives. And oh, the Infinity click is such a welcome feature. When it got dark, I just waited for that click and I was all set. Brilliant! I can't wait to take this lens to some epic locations. ... show more

  • I am very pleased with this lens - but the packaging ......
Style: Nikon F
I am very pleased with this lens. Beautifully made and gives a great wide-angle view. I must say however, that I was less than pleased with the Amazon packaging. The Irix box (which contains an Irix tin, inside which is the Irix lens case with the lens itself inside) was just tossed in to a MUCH larger Amazon box with just some of the 'airplus' air cushions and not very many of them: because of the loose packaging it meant that the Irix box with the lens inside could easily bang around. As a consequence, both the Amazon box and the inner Irix box were knocked about and the Irix tin inside the Irix cardboard box was dented. Despite this the lens seems fine since the lens itself, as mentioned, was inside yet another lens-case packaging inside the above-mentioned (dented) tin - and just as well! For a $900 AUD item I think it is reasonable to expect more secure packaging. ... show more

  • It's a beautiful thing........
Style: Nikon F
I'm impressed with the design and build. Even the packaging is well executed. The lens is a beautiful thing if you appreciate that kind of detail, and I do. I've only taken some snap shots, so far. I really excited about how little distortion there is for a lens this wide. I'm geeked. It's in my bag now and I can't wait to shoot it for real, work and weather permitting. The pictures below show the lens show on a crop sensor D7000 and a full frame sensor (wider shot) D610. I'll post an update when I can speak on the performance. ... show more

  • Nice pictures, but objects near left and right edges appear very wide
Style: Nikon F
Maybe that can be corrected with lens lcp files? But 'out of the box' objects a getting wider as they are off center. That causes confusion looking at pictures of an ongoing kitchen remodeling project. The '2x4's look like at least '2x12' close to the edge. The rectilinear lines are great though. Everything is straight. ... show more

  • Wow! What a great lens.
Style: Canon EF
I was not expecting such great image quality from a lens this low priced. It works perfect with all my Canon cameras(5D MK4, 5DsR, 6D). Even though it is manual focus if you stop the lens down to F8 or 11 everything is sharp. Very little falloff or vignetting. Very happy. I hope you come ut with a wider lens as good as this one. ... show more

  • Get it right, Amazon.....
Style: Nikon F
Actually, I think I'm going to love it once Amazon sorts out their inventory control issues. I ordered a Nikon mount, and when I received the lens with the intent of heading out for the rest of the day, I looked at the box to verify it said Nikon.... it did. But the box was not sealed and the Irix tin box it ships in had some bends in it. The lens was secure in it's hard case, so I figured we're good. Then I tried to put in on my camera. No go. I looked at the lens end cap and saw that it was a Cannon mount. To make matters worse, the only return option was a refund, for which there is a 7 day waiting period after they receive the item. Now I get to wait, or decide to fund their mistake for a week or so. ... show more
