  • Great saw
I had a 'consumer' saw (a poulan pro) for a couple of years but it got to the point where I was exceeding the qualities of the saw, so this time I wanted something a little more professional. This is excellent - a lot more of the body is metal compared to the plastic of the poulan pro. It starts very easily, and keeps running, even when I put on the chainbreak. It doesn't stall easily, and most importantly it's been going through wood like it's not there. Very very happy with it. ... show more

  • Read Manual First! (not after)
Just make certain you read the manual(not well written) plus google BEFORE you try to install the bar and chain. The clutch must be correctly released prior to removal of the side cover. I wish they'd have Americans write the appropriate manual.

  • Very powerful and light... but it will ...
Very powerful and light... but it will not stay started. Once it gets hot, it will die and there is nothing that can be done about it. The autotune functionality does not work the way it ought to.

  • great saw
Light weight, perfect design. I am not just sure about Autotune technology how it works. On full throttle the engine puffs sometimes.

  • Beware Overstated Discounts
Beware of overstated savings, then if you get the saw read the owners manual on how to start it. This is a ~$600 list price saw per Husqvarna website, not $785.70 or even $898.57! Personally I'd stay away from any vendor who claimed to discount from a phony price and wonder that Amazon tolerates it given how important a reputation for customer savings is to their brand. Shop around. That said, this is a serious saw, a commercial model, an investment but not for the novice. For instance it comes with the more aggressive non-safety chain, and from what I read is a bit complicated. Then again, I regard any chainsaw as complicated. Keeping them sharp requires getting educated on how, then learning a new kind of patience in doing it. It is no small task. And the alternative is puuure frustration. Ever try to do serious cutting with a dull ax? Same thing, only a chainsaw gets more dull fast, spitting out wood dust not chips, then smoke and cutting crooked. And then of course there is the absolute necessity in any small engine of using only the highest octane fuel, keeping it fresh, and properly mixing in approved 2 cycle oil. The 550xp model caught my attention because the Appalachian Mountain Club uses it for clearing trails. They also use saws by Stihl, which is generally regarded as the very top of the line, with Husqvarna second, and Echo third. The gentleman giving the chainsaw workshop prefers his Stihl. But there's a shop that specializes on Husqvarna on my way to work where I can always get it serviced etc so I went this route. Of course a big challenge in buying a chain saw is wading through all the choices and part numbers and variations on part numbers. So, ever so briefly, variants on the 550xp: "Triobrake" adds a 3rd mechanism beyond the kickback bar for stopping the chain from moving. "G" refers to heated handles. All 550xp are "autotune." More importantly, I've discovered you can do "Google Like" searches on the Husqvarna website. Type "What is Triobrake" in the search box and you'll get an answer. So, got a question? Maybe there's an answer there. By the way, you don't want to buy Husqvarna at Home Depot. Many products there are built to special cheapo specifications - that's volume purchasing power for you. And now for full disclosure, I haven't even received my saw yet, which is why I give it only 4 stars so far, based entirely on expectations. But I'll fire it up soon and let you know. I need the exercise. ... show more

  • Lightweight Powerhouse!
For context, my current saws are the fantastic Dolmar 7900 (German-made commercial grade) and the Husky 550xp. Previous saws include the excellent Stihl 260 Pro. Use: We burn around 6 cords of firewood per season including some around the house trimming and limbing and some random stuff like volunteer mitigation work. I use my Dolmar 7900 for larger diameter trees but for anything 14-16" and under, I'm running the Swedish-built 550xp. I can literally run it all day without fatigue due to the excellent anti-vibe and the light weight. I prefer the 16" bar as it more compliments the high speed nature of the 550 although an 18" bar would suffice otherwise, you might want to get a bigger saw if you need more bar. I haven't ran them all but I doubt there are many saws that can limb as well as the 550xp. It even makes the 260 Pro feel like a slow pig. The true beauty rests in the Autotune carb. I cut anywhere from 5,200ft to around 10,000ft, from 0 degrees up to 100 and not having to adjust a carb or avoiding the risk of running too lean is brilliant!! Lastly, Stihl, Husqvarna, Dolmar, and others all make really good PRO/COMMERCIAL grade saws and you can't go wrong with any of those choices however on a performance to weight ratio, the 550xp has it's category on lock down. 5 stars as it currently stands but I'm docking a star until this saw proves to be as reliable as my manual tuned saws have been. ... show more
