Setup Process The initial setup was slightly confusing, but once I figured it out, it didn't take very long to get everything up and running. The instructions could be a bit clearer, but with a bit of patience, I managed to complete the setup without major issues. HP stands for Hardly Practical…..

Trying to keep this simple but this is just not a good printer. The good: not much. The plastic used and construction are cheap. Feels flimsy. Trying to install the print heads is simply a pain. You have to use a flashlight to try to see where to install both cartridges, then you have to somehow hold these cartridges while making your hand flatter then a sheet of paper to fit them into a space designed not to allow your hand to fit into while praying you don’t break the flimsy plastic. The print quality was really good…for a few prints until a paper jam screwed up the whole printer. It took two sheets of standard paper instead of one and all of a sudden an error message, on the very tiny screen, keeps saying to reinstall the specified print head cartridge, but it doesn’t say or specify which one. So, reinstalled both and it refuses to print. Now it says the print head cartridges need replacing- after less than 20 prints. HP engineered this thing to be very hard to install and set up, very hard to install the print heads cartridges, very unusable, and their software requirements are the most invasive I have ever seen. You seem to have more privacy rights with malware than with the HP software. It runs only on a wireless setting, so no printer cable connection allowed. Setting up the wifi is very tricky and can only be set up on a 2.4 ghz wifi system. So, if you don’t know if your system has a 2.4 or is a 5 ghz system, might want to check that out before buying this. Many routers have both, but you need to know how to set those up, which brings the ease of use into question. This isn’t made for someone who doesn’t have the knowledge base to troubleshoot whether or not their router supports a 2.4 ghz or 5 GHz, or has dual bands in which to connect to, just something to think about. If you are asking yourself what a 2.4 or 5 GHz router is, ask yourself why should you have to bother with router settings in order to print a picture of your dog. Next, if you decide to buy this, be sure to set the WiFi up correctly from the get-go. When I set this up it identified my router in the settings, so I connected it. Unfortunately it defaulted to 5ghz and therefore would not connect to my computer. After having to troubleshoot, I found the HP site of no use, so off to Google I went. Came across a site saying it has to be a 2.4 connection so I tried setting it up on my 2.4 but it still wouldn’t connect. Long story short- took 30 minutes to reset the entire printer, remove the printer from the computer, reinstall the printer, and finally got it to work. So complicated. It does have some good features though, but not many. The fact that it has the ink bottles is good, and they are not difficult to fill so that part HP did right. One other thing that is perhaps the most fantastic part of the printer is…This is the only printer I have seen with handles on the plastic wrapping it comes shipped in so getting it out of the box is very easy. However, keep in mind you will need to keep this plastic wrapping and box….because you will probably have to send it back like I am doing.

Let me address a few of the complaints others had in their poor reviews. 1. The printer seems cheap and flimsy. [No, it’s your typical inkjet quality printer in this price range. Great for home use. Maybe not great for public/commercial use.] 2. There’s no paper tray. [Correct, there’s a rear, angled, paper “rack”, which is very typical for this style printer. This isn’t a $4000 laser printer from 1997.] 3. You have to insert two print heads. [Yeah, so what. They are as easy to install as an ink cartridge. They easily snap into place. You do it once, and you’re done.] 4. It’s complicated to set up. [Actually, the instructions were so easy to follow I was shocked. I expected at least one or two issues, but they never materialized.] So…I’ve used it for a few days, and so far, it’s exactly what I expected. I’ve owned various printers over the last 40 years. I buy one and use it until it dies. This is a standard quality inkjet printer, and my first “ink tank” printer, which is pretty cool, and hopefully will save me money. From experience, I expect this to last 3-7 years. We’ll see.

Effective installation

We wanted a non-cartridge printer. Searched Amazon and other online sites, and even went to Best-Buy and Staples stores. I was fearful of any of the printers based on product reviews, but bit the bullet on the HP Smart Tank. I was able to set up the unit without any trouble, wifi connected, installed drivers on 2 iPhones, a MacBook and and a iMac, installed the ink and printer heads in about 1 1/2 hours. Will update performance after some time of use to see if noted problems occur for us. We've had this printer for over a month now, and it is working as intended with no problems. I would buy it again.

When it works it’s great!

When it works it’s fast and great.. but sometimes it can’t find my internet. I have an epson printer( i don’t like the quality of its prints) that sits right next to the HP smart tank570 and my computer always seems to have my epson as a choice to print but not the HP. For that i took off a star. Quality: i love when it prints!! I love the tank .. so easy to fill up! And i use the scanner and it’s been great! Dislike: wireless connection doesn’t always connect. I bought this a few months back and it still struggles. Maybe it’s the internet but my epson is always available to print. * i replaced an HP with an HP .. my last one never had connection issues .. i just really wanted the tank feature for the amount of printing i do with work.

Absolutely gorgeous Is setup a little different? Yep Is it cheap? Absolutely not! The print heads snap right in Open the front door Turn the orange handle cloxk wise 90 degrees and push the little blue lever down on top It pops out Take your two print heads One color one black Color on left and black on right The chip looking part to the rear Pop the blue lever on top down and anaps shut! Thats it! Paper tray is on the backside and works well I bought it mostly for scanning papers for work grievance and comms! Works amazing

Very nice printer output but a bear to install!

I have installed many printers over the years but, I have never found myself frustrated up to now that is. Installing the print heard was the limits of my capacity. After the printer head door is opened the protection device holding the chambers for the heads must be then opened. That involves removing the devices covering the chambers. There is no indication a s how to accomplish tat. There ase srrews apparently holding them in. You must slide your hand into the opening and feel your way as you are unable to see what you're doing. There are no directions. I managed to grip the housing and yanked it. It wasn't easy. I thought I broke the chamber but it was the protective holding that was falling apart. I got the pieces out and then could see the chambers. No direction as how to go from here. I had to twist my hand around while holding the printer head in order to get the printer head started into the enclosure. That only took twenty five minutes. The first ony took fifteen minutes and the second one took ten minutes. Then I had to figure how to click them into place. Not a simple task. Once again I felt I was forcing the head in and it would break. I was amazed when it went in. Then I was directed to move the heads into place. No directions how to do that. I just slid the housing over and back a few times until it seemed to fit in. Looks pretty flimsey. When I went to hook it up just another venture. It is wireless meaning no cables. I was directed to load an app that was supposed to let me computer that it had a new printer. I've been working with that app for two daws and still have no sucess. I think that I have entered the required info but the directions go full circle and want direct me again for the same info. No sucess so far. My LINUX laptop saw the printer right and I was able to print through tha as well as through my iPad. But, no computer built by HP using Windows 11 has been able to work yet. The print-out is very good and reasonably quick. I don't do a lot of color printing but loading the ink into the printer was not a problem. The black ink bottle is much largrer than those meant for color. No printing at all with my HP AlliIn-One desktop computer.

Worthless printer, support, warranty

I rarely write reviews, but the HP Smart Tank Plus 651 is that bad. I received 2 of the HP Smart Tank Plus 651 printers and both were defective. The first worked for 5 weeks before black stopped printing, and then the print heads suddenly stopped and would not move. Its’ replacement arrived boxed with already defective print heads and never worked at all. For the first printer, I spent 2 hours with HP to file and over document the claim. I then had to spend over 3 hours with technical support performing repeated tasks to prove the 651 was broken. On the replacement sent to me, I spent another 2 hours with technical support to prove the 651 was defective as sent. I suspect the design to be inadequate, the build excessively fragile, and the longevity appears nonexistent. The mechanical components appear inexpensively made and there is likely little manufacturing quality control. I am computer literate and familiar with printers. As bad as the HP technical support was, Customer service was worse. I was transferred from one to the next, often getting disconnected, and each one had no authority. Promised phone calls come a day later if at all. The support website is quirky. The responses are inadequate to resolve problems. On the plus side they are polite, on the negative side they slowly resolve nothing before escalating it to many additional levels or agents, most without any authority or knowledge of the case. The “warranty” is weak if you are even able to get help or a replacement. To go above that, you must reach the Consumer Escalations Department. Be advised there are many levels to get through to reach them. If you are even able to get the rare exception refund, it is prorated in some mysterious manner. Many years ago HP was an innovator and produced quality products. The two printers I received were neither. Let the buyer beware. I should have noted how many reviews stated their 651 also failed quickly with similar issues. The small loss is worth it to get away from HP. I am saving on ink, but that is because it will not print at all. If there was 0 stars, I would vabe rated it as a 0.
