I have owned HP printers forever. Our old HP all in one was still going after 12 years but the scanner bed had gotten dirty and I also decided it was time to upgrade because I needed double sided printing and also the ability to print wirelessly from my iPhone and iPad. A nearby Office Depot was closing its doors and having a big blow out sale to get rid of all its inventory so I decided to go look at printers thinking I could get a screaming deal. I talked to one of the sales associates about my needs and she said this was a very popular model that offered all the features I want and then some. They had it marked down from $180 to about $153 on sale. Before I bought it I do what I always do and checked Amazon and was shocked to find that the exact same printer in the exact same package was only $99 with Prime! I bid farewell to Office Depot (no wonder they're closing) and went right home and ordered it! I have to say, so far I REALLY LOVE this printer! First of all, it was the easiest printer to set up EVER!! I mean, I truly couldn't believe it! I'm a gadget tech nerd (built my own PC) and was prepared to have to spend an hour getting it all unpacked, turned on, calibrated, set up on my network and also connected to my devices for wireless printing. That's what I'm used to. Set up of this printer BLEW MY MIND with how simple it was! Literally, you take it out of the box and remove all foam and plastic etc., plug it into the wall, press power, insert the ink (SO simple) and follow the instructions on screen to align the cartridges. Once it was aligned the touch screen informed me to go to hp.com/setup to download the drivers I would need. My computer/network automatically detected the printer and knew just what drivers I needed. Download and setup was a breeze! You can use the provided disk instead but I didn't even remove it from the sleeve. The one thing I would say about HP and their software is that they tend to over do it. My recommendation is to select the option that enables you to choose which additional programs you want installed instead of letting HP do it for you. I always get way more than I bargain for and end up uninstalling a lot of the "bloatware" programs that I don't use that just take up HD space like HP photo etc. I use photoshop. There is an option for just the basic drivers that you can select. Your printer will work just fine with those and you won't get blogged down with unwanted software. Either way works great though. I tried both. The driver setup took 5 minutes. Then I got on my iPhone and downloaded the HP ePrint app which IMMEDIATELY recognized and connected to my printer all on its own! You can use it to print from your photos, the web, email and the cloud. AWESOME!!! That was it! In about 12 minutes from the box I was completely set up, connect and printing! Here are some other things I love about this printer: - Fastest setup of any printer ever (yes I know I already mentioned this but it deserves repeating). No having to manually enter IP addresses or anything like that! - Design is very sleek and modern. I love the all black with little color screen! It's pretty sexy as printers go! - Small/slim profile. For everything this printer does and how well/quickly it does it, it really is quite small! WAY smaller than my old HP all in one! - Touch screen is really high quality! I often get frustrated with touch screens at check out stands and elsewhere because they're not very sensitive to your finger or pressing down in one spot causing a neighboring button to be selected. That is NOT the case with this touch screen. I find that it's very sensitive and accurate and also the display is crisp and beautiful! - AUTOMATIC DOUBLE SIDED PRINTING AND SCANNING. HALLELUJAH! - Printing is very fast and the print quality is excellent, even and especially with photos! - I LOVE that this printer only needs one cable (unless you want to use the fax feature as well) and works so well wirelessly! - Printing from the app on my mobile devices is my new favorite thing - Unlike my old printer, this guy is whisper quiet when it's printing. It's a little thing, but I live with an autistic 4 year old and a husband who sounds like he's calling in air support for a military strike when he talks on the phone so...sometimes the little things make a big difference! - Scan quality is really fabulous! Honestly, I rarely give 5 star reviews to things, but this printer really does deserve it, from price point to set up to functionality and features. I HIGHLY recommend this printer for all your in home office needs! And no, I didn't get it for free or at a discount. I paid full price for it and I would do it again! I hope this helps someone else who is looking for an office upgrade! UPDATE 1/21/17 - After a couple weeks I started having issues with this printer going offline spontaneously and the only way I could seem to get it back online to was by restarting my computer. Around that time we also bought a Roku 4 and started having trouble with streaming. The signal was dropping all the time. I finally realized that it was because of our router, which, while a great work horse for many years, was getting seriously old in "tech years" and needed to be replaced. I bought a dual band Asus router and ever since I installed it we have not only had flawless streaming but the printer now stays "online" all the time! If you're having this issue with it going offline, I would look at your network setup before you blame the printer itself. ... show more

Always go for HP printers
As usual, a great HP product. I upgraded (or downgraded depending on how you see it) from a Photosmart printer that has recently seen most of its apps be rendered unusable due to HP killing them off from that generation of printers. I was tired of the random quirks I was having with ePrint since they moved to a new service they call HP Connect. I'm also doing less photo printing and more document scanning. First off: Yes, this printer can do automatic 2 sided scans! I was getting tired of trying to find if it did or not considering the material only points to automatic 2 sided printing and the ability to scan multiple documents to copy as 2 sided (2+ single sided to 1+ double sided). So I honestly bought it on a risk and also due to price when I bought it, $20 less than price shown on 1/18/17. When I installed it, I started messing around with settings and at the bottom of the page options for copying was 2 -> 2 sided. It isn't mentioned anywhere, but that's the setting to take a 2 sided document and copy as a 2 sided document. There was also a 2 -> 1 sided which allows you to undo the dual sided and copy each side as a single page. This will be a huge time saver with all the documents I plan on saving digitally. Second: For the price, this is one of their faster models. Although color still lags behind after all these years, I feel it is still respectable at 11 ppm at best quality. The product page on HP claims it can be as high as 20 ppm or so if using draft. Considering the only color prints I'd use at best quality are photos, this is blazing fast to me. Black can get as high as upper 20's in draft. I have never seen a reason to print a document in best mode, so to have speeds of upper 20's black and roughly 20 color is more than adequate for most people. Also, draft mode ensures a longer life for your cartridges. Even during my heaviest printing times, I've had cartridges last me months using draft mode. And ever since getting the Photosmart as my first dual sided capable printer, I have bought paper in years! I admit though, I over bought paper a few years ago when Staples did buy 2 get 1 free on cases. Third: I have always hated tri-color cartridges. Yellow is ALWAYS the first to go since black printing uses some yellow as well for whatever reason unless you set default document settings to gray-scale. Even when I would print photos way back when, the 3 colors never finished at the same time. A tri-color cartridge guarantees that you will have to buy a new one before using all the ink. Part of the reason I took so long to change printers was that HP seemed to have gone back in time to strictly tri-color. This printer though uses a single cartridge per color! Thank goodness. This is the 21st century, tri-color cartridges should be totally obsolete, or at the very least relegated to the cheapest of models. Fourth: Wi-Fi connection appears very fast. There is a caveat though, this printer takes a while to start from a cold start. I sell often on eBay and print from the app. With the Photosmart, maybe due to the change in service, I used to have to wait a while before the printer processed what it was doing. With this one, as soon as the printer states it's online, it begins within seconds any print job received from either HP Connect or HP Direct (the mobile to printer connection that uses Bluetooth I believe). I have had consistent success with HP Direct since it takes out of the equation everything except my phone and the printer. HP Connect though I always had issues with. The eBay app seems to hate printer plug-ins, so I decided to try going the HP Connect route. This involves e-mailing the printer what you need to print. Well, I e-mailed a shipping label. I decided to sit down and wait the customary forever for it to print (based on Photosmart experiences). After hitting send and touching the chair to sit, the printer had already began the printing process. Since this printer was made after the switch to HP Connect, it went super fast! I can say I am completely impressed. Fifth: Paper tray. Yeah I know how cares, it's a tray. But coming from a Photosmart, being able to put what looks like a third of a ream of paper into the tray is so nice. I always felt I was reloading paper too often on the Photosmart due to the small tray. I do miss the dedicated photo paper tray though. That's all I could think of with my limited use of the printer thus far. The only negative is that I feel it takes too long to be ready from a cold start. I know it is partially my fault because I kill the surge protector to save as many pennies as I can. Florida Power and Light really loves shafting us with the power bills here in Miami. But I have restarted the printer without turning off the surge protector and it still took a bit longer than the Photosmart. But with 5 positives so far vs the Photosmart, whats a bit longer boot up time? ... show more

How I fixed my 3-day WIFI installation frustration
I have been a faithful HP user for the last 5 years due in no small part to their quality and reliability. My Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (n911g) finally died after 4 years of home use. So, after doing some web searching, I decided to fall back to the highly recommended HP Scanjet Pro 6978. After 3 days of frustrating effort in trying to implement the wifi printer function, I was able to successfully enable it in my new printer/scanner. Seeing and experiencing the frustrations shown in purchase reviews, I decided to take the time to layout what worked for me. The bottom line is that HP Smart was not detecting that my computer was set up to not share devices. The basic software at the HP Customer Support web page did and corrected this. More detail below. As background, I had used HP Smart with my previous 8600 printer and became frustrated with it, so I stopped using it and started using just the basic printer software. Also, seeing the Instant Ink “horror stories” in the purchase reviews, I was determined not to let this happen during the install. As it turned out this latter fear was totally un-founded and I was easily able to bypass the Instant Ink offer. In retrospect, I believe HP Smart is a good addition to the basic software, however, over the years my 5-year-old laptop has been subjected to a lot of additional security and other software which I believe HP Smart was unable to detect and correct. Once corrected, I plan to continue with HP Smart and believe the underlying issue was also the source of the problem I had with it with my prior printer. During the initial setup, I was easily able to get the printer into my network (solid unblinking blue wifi indicator on the printer). Where the 3 days of frustration happened was in getting the computer to recognize the printer! Once I gave up on the HP Smart wifi and other USB and ethernet solutions, I decided to go back to finding the basic 6978 software. On the HP support web page I found a it through web link HPEasyStart_14_6_6. Using it led to another piece of software (Full_Webpack-40.16.1234_1-OJ6970_Full_Webpack) that completed the installation on my laptop. I believe I had to start an HP account for this as well as use the sharing functions. What the basic software detected was that my computer was not allowing my devices to share. Once it corrected this, the software installation went quite quickly. I believe this unsharing was done by my security software in order to eliminate the risks of remote hacking. I may very well go back (or have to when the AVG software scans again) and limit the sharing to only the devices I want to access the printer. ... show more

Finally a printer that works and doesn't feel cheaply made, love instant ink
So, I have been a Canon printer lover for over 20 years and I never thought I would leave that brand. Sadly their printers have declined in quality and performance every time I have bought a new one. I wish I had kept my old printer about 4 printers ago that still worked, but I wanted something with a few more features (I don't think they make ink for it anymore though). The last Canon printer I had was the MX922 and when it worked it was okay - never fantastic because of the size and weight (25.7# makes lifting it up to refill paper a major pain, and it needed a support under the printer drawer on my desk because it was too heavy). When I attempted to purchase a new printer to replace it (I got tired to having to align the print head due to wavy lines reappearing over and over), I couldn't obtain a new Canon that worked out of the box. So, on to the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978. The printer feels solid and not flimsy in any way. The set up was simple with easy to follow instructions. Everything went smoothly without a single error message or problem. It printed an alignment page and scanned it successfully, perfect on the first try. The software is easy to use and straightforward. Scanning is easy and it is also easy to select which format to save the file under and the location to save it to. The application is also nice because you are able to see your ink levels right within the It was simple to set it up on my wireless network. It is recognized by all of my devices, computers, phones, tablets. Printing via email is also easy, and I was able to effortlessly change the print email address to one I can remember. I didn't test the fax capability because I do not have a telephone line in my den, I use Tiny Fax on my phone for faxes and find it to be a simple, easy, low-cost method to send faxes the 2 or 3 times a year I need to send a fax. If I was a frequent fax sender, I would certainly have a phone line installed in my den and use my printer to fax instead. For how rarely I use it, it's not worth the cost of a phone line or using a 100 ft telephone cord to connect to the nearest phone line. I signed up for Instant Ink, I print less than 50/pages a month and at $2.99/mo for ink, it can't be beaten. That is less than I would spend to replace the cartridges one time a year. If I find I print more, I can always upgrade to the next higher plan, which is still less than replacing the ink tanks one time a year. Also, I signed up for the free trial and entered a code and ended up getting 5 months of Instant Ink for free - awesome! So far I love the printer, I will update if anything changes. To update I am in grad school and printing like crazy - probably 250 pages/week, and upgraded the instant ink to a higher plan. I still love it. I did have a temporary problem with this jamming, but I found out it had a notecard stuck inside somewhere (it wasn't giving me a paper jam message). It finally moved to a place where a sensor picked up the jammed note card and I was able to get it out. It printed probably 500 pages (with intermittent jamming) WITH that notecard in there. Since the notecard has been removed (and prior to when I printed the notecards) there have been zero jams. So, perhaps not the best printer to print notecards on ... otherwise I LOVE this printer and it has gotten a lot of use! ... show more

SCAM - DON'T BUY. Fidgety, Touchscreen Problems, Scanner Problems
UPDATED 3/13: Once again, having MAJOR problems with this printer. Owned it for less than 6 months. I've printed less than 50-100 pages total since I bought this printer in August. The system keeps telling me I am running out of ink. And, I only print in draft greyscale/B&W. How is it possible that I am running out of magenta, yellow, and cyan when I am only printing in B&W? This printer and HP really infuriate me. I can guarantee that the vast majority of supposed "verified purchase/5-star" reviews are from people that HP has paid to buy the machines and write favorable reviews. I don't trust HP and I wish someone would do something about a company that scams people with high-priced inferior products. UPDATED: Biggest piece of sh*t ever. I've printed less than 50 pages, since I bought the thing - ALL on 'draft black & white' and the printer is already telling me I am running low on cyan ink. Can you say SCAM? Can you say HP likes to SCREW PEOPLE. Can you say HP has NO ETHICS OR MORALS? Can you say HP should be tried CRIMES AGAINST consumers? DON'T BUY THIS PRINTER!!! When I purchased this back in August, I recollect the overall 'star' rating to be much higher. Suddenly I am seeing dozens of negative reviews. It makes you wonder if the so-called 'verified' purchases and even the 'vine' reviews were legitimate. In general, after having this computer for a little over a month (and using it for only a couple of weeks), I find it disappointing. Set up was relatively easy, although because I don't want HP to "own" me, I haven't registered the product or signed up for their so-called ink deal. Initially, the printer seemed to work fine, but then suddenly the touchscreen on the printer just stopped responding. I rebooted the printer, reinstalled the drivers on my computer, and finally tried updating the software directly on the printer. This was after several days of trouble shooting and finding nothing on the internet. I also can't seem to figure out how to get the document feed to support multi-page scanning or double-sided scanning. I would probably NOT recommend that anyone buy this printer. I am very disappointed. ... show more

A great business oriented HP printer that can find a great place also at home!
Spoiler alert: I just buy HP printers but my review is not biased in fact the device in question has an initial defect that can provoke lots of headaches during the setup process. HP always provide great products for the price paid, and you can see that the printer is very well built, the display is very convenient and easy to read. The touch screen is very responsive, however at times I had few issues where I was trying to type 2 and was recording 1. But other than that the touchscreen is really useful especially if you do not plan to use it at all with a computer - something that can be accomplished easily and quickly. If your goal is to set it up straightly as a wireless printer, do not do that immediately, there is a very big issue in the firmware shipped in the printer. You will lose WiFi connectivity and none of your computer will recognize it as connected. Good news is that it can be easily fixed. Be ready to have an ethernet cable instead and connect it to your router, then perform a network setup and turn off Wireless. What you need is the included HP Web Server active, then log in into the web panel and from there trigger a software update. It will take about 5 minutes to complete, restart your printer, activate the WiFi and pair it to your WiFi Router, disconnect the ethernet cable and voila! You will be ready to use your printer everywhere in your small office or home. The printer receive data very quickly and it's able to print a regular color or black white document in just seconds, and the default regular quality is really good for all purposes printouts. You can obviously decide to print using photo paper and the quality of the printouts is astonishing, you won't expect such quality from a OfficeJet and I was a bit concerned but after printing a photo with both the DeskJet and the OfficeJet I can see that the difference is really really minimal, I may see that the DeskJet print a little bit sharper, but it's not something you'll notice unless you have a good eye or a magnifier in your hands. Something that I am really liking is the total full-duplex feature, meaning not only you can print 2 sides easily, but you can get 2 sided copies using the upper feeder. That is a very nice addition and also you can scan double sided/multipage documents easily also using the upper feeder. A difference I noticed between the OfficeJet and the DeskJet is that the software provided for this printer is bare-bone, nothing to scream about. The only mention I may have is the OCR, which is a nice addition but nothing really big. Also, the drivers and control panel design is really "office" oriented, there are not the same amount of options that you will find for a DeskJet. I know, I understand that HP meant all this to be easy-as-possible to avoid distractions to business-oriented-minds but it's also true that regular retail users and home users may buy this printer thinking about "home" usage... Maybe HP can learn and offer different drivers depending the situation, but this is not topic of this discussion. It is important to underline I successfully configured this printer on a Mac, 2 Windows laptops, 1 Linux laptop, 1 ChromeBook and 2 Android devices. While it's frustrating the fact that the interfaces are all different, it's nice to know that Google Cloud Printing is fully functional and supported, and that I can print photos of my outdoor escapades from my android device and finding them already printed when I get home! Inside the box you won't find an ethernet cable nor a usb cable, so if your plan is to connect to a router or directly to a computer via USB be ready to have such cables with you, also do not use the CD to install software to your computer because it's also outdated, once you got the printer connected and you are ready to install it, in your windows pc or macintosh, visit the following url [...] - Follow the simple instructions and you will get the all the required updated software. Notice: The printer itself will recommend this step from the display. Another nice addition, not really useful but still an addition. This printer has sound, yes. Each action is accompanied by soft tone. In the eventuality that you don't like to listen any noise coming from the printer you can just disable sounds and activate also quiet mode, which will slow down the operations but will make the printer extremely quiet. It has a FAX, I tried just once to send a fax to the office and process is really easy, straightforward. You can configure it to work on a dedicated fax line or sharing it with regular telephone line. If you select the second option, the printer I suppose will ring along with your phone but as I haven't received any fax, I cannot say how it rings. Being an HP product I suppose it will just work fine and as expected. All in all, although the installation process is a bit tedious the printer is really top notch, good printout quality, easy of use (once configured) and a plethora of useful features make this a great catch, a printer you should buy for home or for your small office! Plus, it's an HP printer! Quality is assured, it uses 4 separate cartridges, which someone said it's bad while instead is a great plus and furthermore each cartridge is really affordable, HP support in my experience is awesome... so, hit the buy now button! It's the printer you need. ... show more

Great for printing for personal use
Great printer for all my projects, especially printing labels for shipping and personal use. Only problem I don’t like is that it goes through a cycle when I turn it on checking on ink levels.
