Bought from amazon warehouse at very low price, and come with a 100% cartridge, a nice purchase. I have another HP color laser printer(M281cdw), I am surprised that if the color cartridge is empty, I can not print in black only mode, which is unbelievable. The cost to replace all 4 cartridge is almost the same as the printer itself. I decided to go with a pure black printer, I no longer need to worry the cost of cartridge, the 148X cartridge can even last almost 10000 pages, I think it is a cost effective choice. Compare to my color printer, this printer is much faster and much louder, and have a fan which will be involved after each print. THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE WORTHLESS, JUST UPDATE THE DRIVER BEFORE INSTALLING AND IT SHOULD BE FINE, VERY PLEASED WITH PRINTER.

    • Firmware issues out of box, but gets better
I have had 2 HP Laserjet printers in the last 2 months. This printer (4101fdn black and white) and a HP color laserjet 4301fdw. I had issues with both printers with their out of box firmware. After updating both, this 4101fdn stopped having issues but the 4301fdw color printer even after replacing it 3 times. So I'm 50/50 on recent HP laserjet printers now which is a shame. I have used HP printers for several years now, almost 9 to be exact. To speak specifically about this 4101fdn printer, It's been working pretty well after updating the out of box firmware. Luckily during the setup process the printer even asks to update the firmware so it's not like its hard to do either. I have had the printer freeze once this month but a simple reboot fixed it, and I'm already used to doing that with electronics any ways. The printer itself is fairly quick to print and the laserjet quality is fantastic! Text looks nice and sharp and certainly better than my old HP inkjet printer. Scanning on it has also worked really great, even the HP software is working great too. Which is on to my next point, the software to install the printer is very easy to use. It has a nice and friendly UI, and easily finds the printer. Although I do like to create a shortcut for the "HPscan.exe" app you can find in the HP program files, that way I can launch straight into the HP scan utility rather than having to launch HP smart app and having that app launch the scan app. Overall the printer itself works well (after updating) and I haven't had any issues so far. I would say that its worth the sale price of $400, I would not recommend it at the retail price of more than $500. There are alot of other printers in that price point that I saw when I was at the store that had much more features such as the canon color laserjet I ended up purchasing after the failed HP 4301fdw.     • Update the firmware the right away.
I bought 5 of these for heavy workloads at trade shows. Had issues at first. Then I updated their firmware. Fixed! Easy to do. Took 1 minute. -1star for bad initial firmware, and +1 star for how easy the fix was. Always check for updates as often as possible on all tech.

The printer itself works great. It was easy enough to set up. It does not come with a cord to connect to your laptop via USB. Just so you are aware it only comes with the power cord. Luckily I had a cord from my last printer that fit it unfortunately the only way to use the fax or to print without being plugged into the USB cord you have to have it plugged into an ethernet wire it does not have the capability for any sort of wireless connectivity whatsoever, which is a very big negative for me because I was hoping to be able to print wirelessly from my cell phone as I use it for many of my documents the print was good and everything else was simple enough to use. This is a review for "HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdn Black & White Printer with FaxHP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdn Black & White Printer with Fax" I have shied away from any brand of printer except Canon for about 15 years. Canon is hands down the best printer manufacturer on the market, but sometimes their interfaces, the portion you see when you try to connect to the printer, aren't the best. But once you get it working, it usually sticks. I had such dreadful experiences with Brother and Epson's years ago, that I swore them off forever. My current Canon does have the ability to have an IP address assigned to it, making it a networkable printer, but lately it kept dropping it every time I wanted to use the printer. So out to the printer market I went, hoping that in the time I had spent away (happily snuggling with my Canon) things had improved. Here I am today with this HP MFP4101 laser printer. I opted to start with an ethernet connection and within 5 minutes of hooking it up and powering it on, I was printing. Of specific interest to me was the "Cartridge Policy" and "Cartridge Protection" settings. The manual says both of these come disabled and I can confirm they were. I've been a remote employee for 24 years. It has been a long time since I worked in an office and had regular access to a laser printer. Even taking into account that SO MUCH has changed in the world of printers since I last regularly used a laser printer, THIS PRINTER IS SMOKING FAST! I am really impressed. ... show more
