No, the GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS Elite AX supports only DDR5 RAM. This motherboard is designed to take advantage of the faster and more efficient DDR5 memory, which provides improved performance over DDR4, especially for gaming and intensive applications.

The GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS Elite AX is equipped with Intel WiFi 6E for wireless connectivity and a 2.5GbE LAN port for wired connections. This allows for high-speed internet connections through both wired and wireless methods, supporting a fast and stable online experience for gaming, streaming, and downloads.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The motherboard under review receives generally high praise for its performance, ease of setup, and aesthetics, offering a good base for both experienced builders and newcomers. Users appreciate the seamless BIOS update process, functional software for drivers and RGB control, and excellent compatibility with recent GPUs and CPUs. However, some users encountered difficulties with BIOS settings, peripheral compatibility, and audio performance, suggesting there may be variability in user experience based on specific needs and hardware configurations.

Pros

  • 🔧 Easy setup and clear labeling, making it user-friendly for first-time builders.
  • 💾 Seamless BIOS updates and functional software for drivers and RGB control.
  • 📡 Onboard WiFi offers significant speed improvements over USB alternatives.
  • 💼 Excellent compatibility with recent GPUs, CPUs, and DDR5 support.
  • 🖥 Beautiful aesthetics that complement various build themes.

Cons

  • 🔇 Audio performance is basic and may not meet the needs of users working with audio editing, streaming, or gaming.
  • 🔄 BIOS can be finicky, with some users reporting difficulties in tweaking settings and encountering unintuitive post beep codes.
  • 🧰 Peripheral compatibility issues, requiring very new monitors or keyboards for optimal functionality.
  • 👾 Some users reported network driver issues, leading to stuttering and unstable connections.
  • 📦 Complaints about the lack of a physical manual, MOBO speaker, or driver CD in the box.

Should I Buy It?

If you value ease of setup, aesthetics, and plan on using recent GPUs/CPUs with DDR5, this motherboard is a strong contender. However, if audio performance and peripheral compatibility are paramount to your build, or if you are not comfortable troubleshooting potential BIOS and driver issues, you might want to consider other options or be prepared for potential workarounds.

  • Sturdy, better than expected, works first try.
Style: Z790|AP|WHITE|M.2 x5|WIFI7 Size: ATX
Putting together a computer can involve accidental abuse of components. You slide around the motherboard trying to get it lined up, you press a little too hard in some areas, you exert too much pressure trying to get the CPU cooler on. You screw things in too tight. Stuff happens. Installing this thing, I was a bit rough, but this thing didn't even care. It took the punishment and worked great first try. I wanted to do a q-flash plus on it before first boot because I'm running an i9-14900kf. So it was only barely half assembled when I pushed the q-flash button. I half expected it to not work at all, but it worked first try! Aaaand then after the flash it tried to boot, which was only bad because I hadn't installed the CPU cooler yet, but hey, the bigger take away is that technically it booted first try. So then I assembled everything else, again I was a bit rough in the process. Again it worked first try when it was all finished. Build quality is really good, this is clearly a premium board. It auto detected and set up all my fans and my pump, which was nice. I wasn't sure how the pump thing was going to work. I plugged my AIO pump into the system fan/pump connector, and it just worked first try, no setup required. That's what you get when you pay for a board like this, it actually works first try with no setup. Aesthetically it looks nice in person, but maybe not as nice as the back mount boards, but still nice. The connectors for fans and power and all that run along the bottom which is okay I guess, although it made cable management a little weird. In terms of value for money, this thing does cost a lot of money, so I wouldn't call it a value, but I will say you are getting what you paid for. You're paying for a $300 motherboard, and you're getting a $300 motherboard, it is exactly what you're paying for, it is quality, and you're paying for that quality. It is very nice, and I have no regrets. ... show more

  • Solid Z790 motherboard
Style: Z790|AE|M.2 x4|WIFI7 Size: ATX
Excellent Intel motherboard for the 12/13/14 series chips. While I use more AMD for my clients than Intel anymore, this is a well designed board with a great layout. Performance was as expected and cooling was a breeze. VRM cooling heatsinks were overkill for most users and that's a plus. Great NVME solutions with non-screw headers coming with the board that I used, a preference for me. ... show more

  • Blown Away For The Price
Style: Z790|AE|M.2 x4|WIFI6 Size: ATX
This is one of the best budget motherboards you can get. The layout is fantastic. everything is easy to get to, all the fan headers are together at the bottom of the motherboard away from hard to get to areas, everything is spaced very well giving you a lot of flexibility to make cable management 10x better. DDR5 3x16 PCIe Lanes (not all are 16, in fact one is 8 one is 4 and one is PCIE3) however they are spaced far enough apart and allow for any size nic. the PCIe 3.0 (bottom) is good for the 10G Nic (youll get around 8-9ish i think?) the top is good for the GPU and the middle one is good for anything that needs the extra speed, if you dont have anything that needs the extra speed place youe 10G nic there ive purchased a lot of motherboards for low end to high end, this might be my favorite one. ... show more

  • Gigabyte does not honor their warranty
Style: Z790M|AE|ICE|M.2 x3|WIFI6 Size: mATX
I bought three of these motherboards and two of them are perfect and I am still using them. One of them came from the factory with bent pins on the CPU socket. Gigabyte will not honor their warranty against defects and charged me $100 to replace a CPU socket that they shipped as defective. I took the CPU and fan from that motherboard and put into one of the other motherboards and it worked fine and is still working. I carefully placed the CPU into the socket and I know the socket came from them as bad. I have been building computers since 1985 and have been in IT for 38 years. No one could be more careful than I am when building a computer. I have been buying Gigabyte motherboards for over 30 years and have never had a defective unit until now. In reading Reddit about Gigabyte, it seems that their quality has gone down for the last two years and there were others that had my same experience of receiving bent CPU pins from the factory and not getting the warranty to be honored. I do not plan to purchase any future products from Gigabyte since they refuse to honor their warranty. ... show more
