Description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear. • Really works great but much darker than expected.
This restor product really works great for dried out older finishes and covering blemishes. However, I’m beginning to think all colors are exactly the same. I had some of the golden oak I restored the top of this old cabinet with. But wanted to retain the light walnut on the sides, keeping the two-tone look. So per the color chart on this product I ordered the maple pine. Suggested for lighter finishes. The result looks the same as the golden oak, and almost as dark as the Old English mahogany on the bottom. 😢 My bad. I know I should have tested it first. But after waiting several days to get it (no local stores had anything but the golden oak) I was anxious to get this project finished. And didn’t want to wait for a return/replace. I should have ordered the natural finish. But at this point, like I said above, I’m wondering if all finishes are really the same color. 🤷🏼♀️ Don’t be a Fran, test in an inconspicuous spot before slapping it on. And wait more patiently. ... show more

  • Performs a perfect job! Use as directed and will be no disappointments.
I love this product for a perfect finish and without stripping! Works excellent on antique pine, maple and walnut and mahogany. Century old wood finished will never look better. Antique finished respond especially well. Follow directions. Little at a time and wipe off thoroughly as you go. Elbow grease doesn’t hurt for some finishes! Great on making alligatoring finishes disappear ... show more

  • The best!!
I just got this today and used it right away! The most frequently opened cabinet showed a lot of wear around the knob leaving a very light colored area…very noticeable! I used this and you’d pretty much never know there had been a problem! Color was a perfect match!!

  • It WORKS
This product really works. I’ve used it several times on different projects. It’s so simple to use and the results are amazing. In the picture the left half has been treated with restor-a-finish and the right side has not. Truly worth getting!

  • Wow so far.
I have only approached a few small pieces and tested it so far the results are amazing. You will need ventilation, a lot of ventilation.

  • Good product, easy to use
I like that I could order a small can from Amazon to use on a medium-sized cabinet top. It worked pretty well on wood that has some damage and the color (Maple) was a good match. Amazon had more color options than my local big box store. It's very easy to apply. The following day I followed with Howard's Feed-N-Wax. Looks pretty good right now. ... show more

  • Bought 3 colors, good matches
I refinished some wood furniture , it was 3 different pieces I had to do. So 3 colors as well. Thus was easy to apply with cloth. Scent was not strong as some I have used. Colors were nice and went on evenly. The colors maple , mahogany & walnut. They were true to their color on my wood. I was pleased with the outcome. I also bought the wax finish by this company and it went on smoothly. Excellent pricing and good overall product. ... show more

  • Does the job it's supposed to!
As long as you buy the correct color, good old Howard Products comes through again! We recently bought a 40-year-old house with lots of nice wood doors and trim everywhere. Seems that through the years, previous owners had not been careful about bashing the woodwork edges, and there was some pet damage, too. This product made most of the damage simply disappear! Close inspection will still find damage here and there, but it's no longer in-your-face the way it was. For just age-worn surfaces and edges that had gone through the stain, they look like new. There is a notice on the can saying NOT to cover this product with varnish, so don't think of it as like a stain. It's a finish in and of itself. I used it on a window sill that had lots of bad water stains on it, thinking I'd cover it with varnish later, until I read that on the label. The product made all the water stains just disappear, and so per the recommendation on the can, I went over it the next day with their "Feed-and-Wax" (or something like that), polished it with a soft cloth, and it looks as good as varnish. I'll probably have to re-apply the wax in time, but for now, I'm stoked! I've been using their products for years (I'm a woodworker) and have lots of them on hand. And no, I didn't get paid to write this! ... show more
