  • Perfect in every way.
Complete Kit. Not to be used by me lightly, this is a complete kit, Everything is there, and the wax coating is phenomenal. The dove tail joints were good and tight and so much wax that you could just see the joints fill up, Even the screw holes for putting the boxes together are predrilled. What a quality product. ... show more

  • Love this hive box
I am giving this five stars as it is nicely priced and easy to put together. The exterior pieces are dipped in wax, providing a nice protective coating so you do not need to paint. With Texas heat, I had to order separately the screened bottom and a gabled roof for better airflow. The vented bottom I was able to acquire is also Hover Hives, but the gabled roof is not as they do not make one. My only complaint with this hive is that some of the frame wood pieces had hairline cracks making the application of nails tricky. I ended up using nails on the top and bottom of the frames, as opposed to the sides, in order to not split pieces apart. The vendor is not easy to get a response from, so you may want to be cautious with nailing frames. I did use a small drill bit to pre-drill nail holes to also help not split wood. I really wish Hoover made a gabled roof as an addition. The roof I added is a Mann Lake roof, which was frankly far too expensive and had to be painted just to protect it. ... show more

  • Definitely recommend, especially for the price.
Very impressed with the quality of this hive. So much so that once I got done assembling this hive, I ordered another one. Things I like: 1. The boxes are joined together with dovetail joints which are superior to the box joints typically used on hives. 2. I did not measure the thickness, but these boxes seem to be made out of a thicker material than most (thicker that 3/4”). 3. Was not aware they came with Queen excluders (mine had 2). I don’t use them, but was nice they were included. 4. Includes high-quality nails for assembly (brass or brass-coated). 5. Brood frames are black which makes it much easier to see eggs when doing inspections. 6. Boxes are waxed so no need to paint, and they look good. Things that could probably use improvement: 1. Not sure it was clearly described, but everything needs to be assembled. Nails are provided, but instructions are not clear on what nails are used where. Fortunately I have a pneumatic pin nailer so I used that to assemble the frames. 2. This hive has a screened bottom but no way to easily utilize an inspection board. Would definitely recommend, especially for the price. ... show more

  • A hive that’s good enough
The hive is very aesthetically pleasing. Me and my family think it looks great. It was simple to assemble but the wax in the dove tail joins the was prevented it from fitting correctly. There is almost enough space for another full frame which I do not like. There is around an inch from the wall to the frame. I am worried that the bees will build random comb in that spot but I'm not sure. If you scoot the frames to the middle it should be fine. But the value for money is pretty okay. It feels sturdy but there is a slight wobble to the boxes when on a flat surface. Overall, if you want something that is just "good enough" then this is pretty alright, you get a lot for the money. ... show more

  • Great Hive!
I'm actually leaving a review because when you're spending a few hundred dollars on something you want to have a better idea what to expect. This has been a fantastic hive. Packaged really well for shipping so even though the box had some dings there was no damage to anything inside. And it comes with a Queen Excluder, Mouse Guard, Escape Gate, Entrance Reducer, and a pre-built Inner Cover, Lid, and Bottom Board. Literally a complete hive. Make sure you've got a hammer, a rubber mallet, and maybe a junk towel/cloth to lay on the ground while working on it. I did pre-drill a starter hole at every place a nail went, frames included, before I pieced anything together. This meant I had zero issues with splitting of the wood. There are videos on YouTube on putting everything together as well. Supers joined together splendidly. If you have the strength you could push these together. The wax does scrape off a bit in the process but it also helps the wood piece together without much friction. The rubber mallet helps get it together good and tight. Make sure it's a rubber mallet when using it directly on the wood. A regular hammer will just dent the shit out of it. For the frames I followed the advice of others and applied a bit of Titebond III wood glue (specifically this one because it's food grade) with a brush (you want a light coat where they join, not a glob. All in all it took maybe 3-4 hours with 1-2 people, even with all the pre-drilling. I am really happy with it. ... show more

  • Nice Boxes
I put one together yesterday. Everything fit smoothly after warming dovetails with heat gun. Plastic frames should be a little wider so they don’t fall out but otherwise I was impressed with quality.
