Description

Hoover Hives bee hive's golden honey glow comes from our patent-pending wax-coating process. Every bee hive is first steeped in our proprietary blend of organic waxes that penetrate and preserve the wood. After this first cure, we then plunge these bee hives deep into a pool of 100% natural beeswax. With waxed walls, your bees can comfortably make their new hive into their new home. This double wax-coating is also what highlights the flow of the wood grain while paint would only mask its natural beauty. Hoover Hives bee hive boxes have an unrivaled degree of craftsmanship. Our precision-cut dovetail joints match up every time and make assembly a breeze. Dovetail joints are essential if you want to keep your bee hive perfectly square without the use of extra wood-working tools. For this project, you'll simply need a hammer. With this kind of accuracy in every cut, your bee hive will avoid unwanted gaps that would cause extra work for your bees. Hoover Hives' exterior dimensions are cut to the Industry Standard. Hive parts are completely interchangeable with any other standard Langstroth beehive. While the Industry Standard would suggest the wood to be a minimum of 1/2", Hoover Hives uses 3/4" thick wood to provide your bees with insulation during both winter and summer. With insulation, your bees won't have to spend time controlling the temperature. Instead, they can spend time collecting pollen & nectar to produce honey. This is a great beginner friendly beehive kit. I actually started beekeeping with this hive and honestly it has been a really good box. At first I was a little skeptical because it was wax dipped instead of painted, but after learning more I realized wax dipping is more weather resistant and common than I originally thought. After about two years of beekeeping, this hive has held up very well and I would definitely buy it again. I bought the hive unassembled and it was fun and easy to put together with simple instructions to follow. The screws did seem a little large and caused some minor cracking in a few spots, but nothing major. The only downside for me was that the inner cover did not have a small side gap/entrance for the bees, so I ended up making one myself. Other than that, this has been a great beehive overall. 5 out of 5 Stars Reasons: Beginner friendly, durable wax dipped wood, and easy to assemble with good overall quality. ... show more

    • Perfect. Easy to put together and use.
I am barely an amateur in beekeeping and an ok woodworker. But if you have a rubber mallet, hammer, and a smidge of patience, ANYONE can put this together. I have a pneumatic nail gun which made putting the frames together a snap. As far as the medium and supers, the dovetailing is perfect. I would only caution being careful when starting to put the joints together. Start tapping lightly and you will see them come together. I have seen in videos people scraping the wax off. I did not and was still able to get them together. I've got 2 so far and plan to get more. Both were very tight fit and in my opinion, did not need glue OR nails. (possibly from not cleaning off the wax?) After making the boxes, they were very strong. However, I went ahead and used my nailer to be safe. So to add that they are already stained AND waxed, I could not be happier. I have wanted to make my own buy by the time one gets the wood, cuts to size, DOVETAILS, stains, etc... this is just so much easier. AND most important, the bees love them too. They made these hives their home instantly and have not left. I was looking at some of the reviews here. I had to giggle at some who were griping about small blemishes, having to paint it white (why???), and other piddly little things. I did not experience those issues and again, for the price and quality, seriously people? ... show more

For the price this is a good deal. I have 6 of these hives now. I’ve put together another 20 from mann lake this year. These dovetails are better than mann lakes straight joints. I had to chisel half of MLs. Ive only had a small split on one joint on the hoovers and one bottom board needed fixing. Trust me at this price that isn’t an issue. For my scale (50 hives) this is more economical than dipping my own hives. Its a little annoying drilling your own pilot holes but not too bad.i have a dremel mounted drill press that works fine. For frames I use a staple gun so I cant attest to those nails. I only use the big brass ones. Just keep in mind this same setup from ML would cost maybe 220 then you'd still have to assemble and paint. Positives *price *wax dipped *relatively good quality Negatives *some pieces didnt accept wax fully *light craftsmanship issues Update feb 2021: While they seem to be holding up alright I have noticed some issues. The wax isn't deep enough. I’ll have to dip them in a hotter wax eventually. Rust has appeared on some lids. It hasn't even been a year. Finally the main reason for a downgrade is that the company purveys that it goes through all this care to make these and its sourced from here and there. . . . You can order these exact hives on Alibaba from the manufacturer. The only difference is they are not branded. Still decent hives for sure. I just bought a bunch from the manufacturer in china. Nothing against hoover. Amazon is fueled by reselling Chinese made goods. Still can be cheaper than Mann Lakes. Plus Mann Lake router has been off. ... show more

Great quality, great value. These kits go together very quickly with the right tools. I bought 8 kits, and a frame assembly jig. Very satisfied with the quality of the wood work and waxing. I wish there was a screened bottom board option for higher temperature regions.
