Hoover Hives bee hive's golden honey glow comes from our patent-pending wax-coating process. Every bee hive is first steeped in our proprietary blend of organic waxes that penetrate and preserve the wood. After this first cure, we then plunge these bee hives deep into a pool of 100% natural beeswax. With waxed walls, your bees can comfortably make their new hive into their new home. This double wax-coating is also what highlights the flow of the wood grain while paint would only mask its natural beauty. Hoover Hives bee hive boxes have an unrivaled degree of craftsmanship. Our precision-cut dovetail joints match up every time and make assembly a breeze. Dovetail joints are essential if you want to keep your bee hive perfectly square without the use of extra wood-working tools. For this project, you'll simply need a hammer. With this kind of accuracy in every cut, your bee hive will avoid unwanted gaps that would cause extra work for your bees. Hoover Hives' exterior dimensions are cut to the Industry Standard. Hive parts are completely interchangeable with any other standard Langstroth beehive. While the Industry Standard would suggest the wood to be a minimum of 1/2", Hoover Hives uses 3/4" thick wood to provide your bees with insulation during both winter and summer. With insulation, your bees won't have to spend time controlling the temperature. Instead, they can spend time collecting pollen & nectar to produce honey. This is a great beginner friendly beehive kit. I actually started beekeeping with this hive and honestly it has been a really good box. At first I was a little skeptical because it was wax dipped instead of painted, but after learning more I realized wax dipping is more weather resistant and common than I originally thought. After about two years of beekeeping, this hive has held up very well and I would definitely buy it again. I bought the hive unassembled and it was fun and easy to put together with simple instructions to follow. The screws did seem a little large and caused some minor cracking in a few spots, but nothing major. The only downside for me was that the inner cover did not have a small side gap/entrance for the bees, so I ended up making one myself. Other than that, this has been a great beehive overall. 5 out of 5 Stars Reasons: Beginner friendly, durable wax dipped wood, and easy to assemble with good overall quality.

I am giving this five stars as it is nicely priced and easy to put together. The exterior pieces are dipped in wax, providing a nice protective coating so you do not need to paint. With Texas heat, I had to order separately the screened bottom and a gabled roof for better airflow. The vented bottom I was able to acquire is also Hover Hives, but the gabled roof is not as they do not make one. My only complaint with this hive is that some of the frame wood pieces had hairline cracks making the application of nails tricky. I ended up using nails on the top and bottom of the frames, as opposed to the sides, in order to not split pieces apart. The vendor is not easy to get a response from, so you may want to be cautious with nailing frames. I did use a small drill bit to pre-drill nail holes to also help not split wood. I really wish Hoover made a gabled roof as an addition. The roof I added is a Mann Lake roof, which was frankly far too expensive and had to be painted just to protect it.

I am barely an amateur in beekeeping and an ok woodworker. But if you have a rubber mallet, hammer, and a smidge of patience, ANYONE can put this together. I have a pneumatic nail gun which made putting the frames together a snap. As far as the medium and supers, the dovetailing is perfect. I would only caution being careful when starting to put the joints together. Start tapping lightly and you will see them come together. I have seen in videos people scraping the wax off. I did not and was still able to get them together. I've got 2 so far and plan to get more. Both were very tight fit and in my opinion, did not need glue OR nails. (possibly from not cleaning off the wax?) After making the boxes, they were very strong. However, I went ahead and used my nailer to be safe. So to add that they are already stained AND waxed, I could not be happier. I have wanted to make my own buy by the time one gets the wood, cuts to size, DOVETAILS, stains, etc... this is just so much easier. AND most important, the bees love them too. They made these hives their home instantly and have not left. I was looking at some of the reviews here. I had to giggle at some who were griping about small blemishes, having to paint it white (why???), and other piddly little things. I did not experience those issues and again, for the price and quality, seriously people?

I wanted one but ordered two by mistake. Figured I would keep them both. The first one was perfect. The dovetails were tight and needed just a little tap to pop together. The wood was consistent quality and had no problems putting in any of the nails. Nice grain and wax finish, absolutely great. FIVE STARS. But the second one. First, the piece of word designated the "entry reducer" was missing. Second, the wood did not look as good as it had a lot of knots, including at the dovetails. Putting this one together was harder and some of the dove tails needed some work due to the knots. When it came time to nail, I quickly found not to try to put a nail thru a knot that is involved in a dovetail. The first time I tried the knot split out leaving a hole in the side of the box. After that I did not use nails near any knots and just let it go with all the other nails around that the knotty dove tail. I ended up have to use wood putty to fix the hole and let it air out for a week before trying to use it, just in case the wood putty was still out gassing. Had I gotten this box first I would recommend not ordering this product., I give this one a THREE STAR rating. I think with a little quality control they can prevent the knots at the dovetails. There were three different nails included in each hive so running out of nails was not an issue. They recommend using glue on the joints but the boxes really do not need it with the dovetails and nails. The Frames however definitely needed some glue. It would be nice if they included a small bottle of glue or at least give a recommendation of what kind of glue they think is best. Last issue, the guy delivering them was not entirely happy about the weight of each box. Keep that in mind, you might want to let them deliver by the garage door instead of having come up steps to deliver at the front door.

I'm actually leaving a review because when you're spending a few hundred dollars on something you want to have a better idea what to expect. This has been a fantastic hive. Packaged really well for shipping so even though the box had some dings there was no damage to anything inside. And it comes with a Queen Excluder, Mouse Guard, Escape Gate, Entrance Reducer, and a pre-built Inner Cover, Lid, and Bottom Board. Literally a complete hive. Make sure you've got a hammer, a rubber mallet, and maybe a junk towel/cloth to lay on the ground while working on it. I did pre-drill a starter hole at every place a nail went, frames included, before I pieced anything together. This meant I had zero issues with splitting of the wood. There are videos on YouTube on putting everything together as well. Supers joined together splendidly. If you have the strength you could push these together. The wax does scrape off a bit in the process but it also helps the wood piece together without much friction. The rubber mallet helps get it together good and tight. Make sure it's a rubber mallet when using it directly on the wood. A regular hammer will just dent the shit out of it. For the frames I followed the advice of others and applied a bit of Titebond III wood glue (specifically this one because it's food grade) with a brush (you want a light coat where they join, not a glob. All in all it took maybe 3-4 hours with 1-2 people, even with all the pre-drilling. I am really happy with it.

This was the easiest thing to assemble I've ever worked with. The dovetailes are cut perfect. So perfect the wax it's dipped in make it a little difficult to to put together. I could definitely see how a heat gun would make it easier, but I just used a knife to scrap the excess away. I then used a rubber mallet to tap them together. I did take the precaution of predrilling the screws, and of the 40 or so screw holes I had minor cracks in the wood in 2 places where I didn't pay close enough attention keeping my screws straight. It's sturdy enough I'm confident I could stand on top of it without damaging it. There is such a thick coat of wax on it I don't imagine I'll need to reapply any for years. I was dreading working with this after some of the reviews as I have a short temper and blessed with zero natural aptitude for any sort of wood working, but now I wish I had more of them to work on. That was so easy it really turned in to a bit of zen time for me.

Complete Kit. Not to be used by me lightly, this is a complete kit, Everything is there, and the wax coating is phenomenal. The dove tail joints were good and tight and so much wax that you could just see the joints fill up, Even the screw holes for putting the boxes together are predrilled. What a quality product.
