  • Hard to assemble
This hive has great quality material. The wood is thick and strong the wax coating is thick and even. The only thing I had trouble with was the dove tail joints were out of tolerance. I had to use a knife and sand paper to take off a bit of wood from the joints and to hammer them together with a rubber mallet. It was a bit more time consuming to do have to do that. I hope they fix that because I plan to order again in the future. The quality was exceptional and the price was good. The rest of the assembly went smoothly and the hive came with a mouse guard that I didn’t notice when I ordered. ... show more

  • Nice kit
The media could not be loaded. Great quality, great value. These kits go together very quickly with the right tools. I bought 8 kits, and a frame assembly jig. Very satisfied with the quality of the wood work and waxing. I wish there was a screened bottom board option for higher temperature regions.

  • Perfect in every way.
Complete Kit. Not to be used by me lightly, this is a complete kit, Everything is there, and the wax coating is phenomenal. The dove tail joints were good and tight and so much wax that you could just see the joints fill up, Even the screw holes for putting the boxes together are predrilled. What a quality product. ... show more

  • Easy to assemble
Easy assembly once you get started. The hive once assembled is sturdy and looks nice.

  • Takes a lot of work to get the joints to fit, otherwise, very nice.
The main boxes will take multiple hours to assemble, requiring a lot of time to carve away excess beeswax in the joints. The wax finish is beautiful, and seems like it will be very durable. The inner comb structure assemblies go together easily, but require glue, drilling, and tiny dowels to really hold together. The provided nails also require drilling to avoid splitting the wood so we chose to use glue and dowels since the frames fall apart after assembly when lifted from the top - even empty. There is no way they would hold together with the weight of comb and either brood or honey. All in all, I would buy again, but plan multiple days for assembly. ... show more

  • Highly recommend!
It's very nice! The wax on the bottom panel is almost halfway gone with in a few months. I'm not sure if that's a defect though. My bees love it. Will buy again.

  • Love this hive box
I am giving this five stars as it is nicely priced and easy to put together. The exterior pieces are dipped in wax, providing a nice protective coating so you do not need to paint. With Texas heat, I had to order separately the screened bottom and a gabled roof for better airflow. The vented bottom I was able to acquire is also Hover Hives, but the gabled roof is not as they do not make one. My only complaint with this hive is that some of the frame wood pieces had hairline cracks making the application of nails tricky. I ended up using nails on the top and bottom of the frames, as opposed to the sides, in order to not split pieces apart. The vendor is not easy to get a response from, so you may want to be cautious with nailing frames. I did use a small drill bit to pre-drill nail holes to also help not split wood. I really wish Hoover made a gabled roof as an addition. The roof I added is a Mann Lake roof, which was frankly far too expensive and had to be painted just to protect it. ... show more

  • Great Hive!
I'm actually leaving a review because when you're spending a few hundred dollars on something you want to have a better idea what to expect. This has been a fantastic hive. Packaged really well for shipping so even though the box had some dings there was no damage to anything inside. And it comes with a Queen Excluder, Mouse Guard, Escape Gate, Entrance Reducer, and a pre-built Inner Cover, Lid, and Bottom Board. Literally a complete hive. Make sure you've got a hammer, a rubber mallet, and maybe a junk towel/cloth to lay on the ground while working on it. I did pre-drill a starter hole at every place a nail went, frames included, before I pieced anything together. This meant I had zero issues with splitting of the wood. There are videos on YouTube on putting everything together as well. Supers joined together splendidly. If you have the strength you could push these together. The wax does scrape off a bit in the process but it also helps the wood piece together without much friction. The rubber mallet helps get it together good and tight. Make sure it's a rubber mallet when using it directly on the wood. A regular hammer will just dent the shit out of it. For the frames I followed the advice of others and applied a bit of Titebond III wood glue (specifically this one because it's food grade) with a brush (you want a light coat where they join, not a glob. All in all it took maybe 3-4 hours with 1-2 people, even with all the pre-drilling. I am really happy with it. ... show more
