This hive has great quality material. The wood is thick and strong the wax coating is thick and even. The only thing I had trouble with was the dove tail joints were out of tolerance. I had to use a knife and sand paper to take off a bit of wood from the joints and to hammer them together with a rubber mallet. It was a bit more time consuming to do have to do that. I hope they fix that because I plan to order again in the future. The quality was exceptional and the price was good. The rest of the assembly went smoothly and the hive came with a mouse guard that I didn’t notice when I ordered.

I’ve ordered 3 of these now and they are very good quality. The dovetail cuts are precision. The fit together easily if you just scrape out excess wax out of the joint and wiggle them back and forth until they are full set. No hammering even necessary if you do it that way. I’ve used a rubber hammer on one of my first ones and it still caused some wood damage. So the wiggle technique sets them much better. They are a great price and I hope they don’t ever go up in price cause these are my go-to hives because of the great value. My first hive still looks like new and I’ve had it for two years.

Very impressed with the quality of this hive. So much so that once I got done assembling this hive, I ordered another one. Things I like: 1. The boxes are joined together with dovetail joints which are superior to the box joints typically used on hives. 2. I did not measure the thickness, but these boxes seem to be made out of a thicker material than most (thicker that 3/4”). 3. Was not aware they came with Queen excluders (mine had 2). I don’t use them, but was nice they were included. 4. Includes high-quality nails for assembly (brass or brass-coated). 5. Brood frames are black which makes it much easier to see eggs when doing inspections. 6. Boxes are waxed so no need to paint, and they look good. Things that could probably use improvement: 1. Not sure it was clearly described, but everything needs to be assembled. Nails are provided, but instructions are not clear on what nails are used where. Fortunately I have a pneumatic pin nailer so I used that to assemble the frames. 2. This hive has a screened bottom but no way to easily utilize an inspection board. Would definitely recommend, especially for the price.

This hive is beautiful! Very sturdy and easy to put together. There is a lot of wax on this so it take a little scraping of the dovetail joints to fit the pieces together. The directions Are ok but there are plenty of videos on line on how to put them together. If you have a nail gun, the job would be much faster, but I would suggest pre-drilling your holes in the frames bc the wood will split . The hive boxes are so darn tight that I didn’t put nails in them. Maybe I should anyway? I also received a few pieces of metal and I have no idea what they are for... They are just beautiful! Stunning even- I am so glad I went with the Hoover Hive! I believe they are made in USA- so that’s a big plus for us!

For the price this is a good deal. I have 6 of these hives now. I’ve put together another 20 from mann lake this year. These dovetails are better than mann lakes straight joints. I had to chisel half of MLs. Ive only had a small split on one joint on the hoovers and one bottom board needed fixing. Trust me at this price that isn’t an issue. For my scale (50 hives) this is more economical than dipping my own hives. Its a little annoying drilling your own pilot holes but not too bad.i have a dremel mounted drill press that works fine. For frames I use a staple gun so I cant attest to those nails. I only use the big brass ones. Just keep in mind this same setup from ML would cost maybe 220 then you'd still have to assemble and paint. Positives *price *wax dipped *relatively good quality Negatives *some pieces didnt accept wax fully *light craftsmanship issues Update feb 2021: While they seem to be holding up alright I have noticed some issues. The wax isn't deep enough. I’ll have to dip them in a hotter wax eventually. Rust has appeared on some lids. It hasn't even been a year. Finally the main reason for a downgrade is that the company purveys that it goes through all this care to make these and its sourced from here and there. . . . You can order these exact hives on Alibaba from the manufacturer. The only difference is they are not branded. Still decent hives for sure. I just bought a bunch from the manufacturer in china. Nothing against hoover. Amazon is fueled by reselling Chinese made goods. Still can be cheaper than Mann Lakes. Plus Mann Lake router has been off.

These hives are assembled using pre-cut dovetail joints rather than conventional box-joints. The joints were cut very accurately and we had no trouble at all fitting them. Just the right tightness. They supply plenty of zinc-chromate platednails to secure the joints. The directions show nailing the dove-tails from both sides but that is kind of pointless, seeing that a dove-tail can pull apart from only one direction. Assembling the frames is a bit trickier as the stock is a bit thin at the bottom end. They do not mention pre-drilling for the included nails but I decided to use a 1/16" drill to prevent splitting. They recommend gluing the frames and I did. Good advice as it makes them much more rigid and puts less strain on the nailed joints. Nearly all stock is good quality pine with the exception of a divider plate which is made of luan. The wax-coated forms that go into the frames of the shorter box were a bit over-sized and would not set right into the frames (too wide). I took a block plane and shaved a fraction of an inch off each edge to prevent them from getting buckled in the frames for being too wide.
