If you're looking for something that just works without a bunch of setup headaches, this is it. Everything you need is included The first thing I noticed was how complete the kit is. It comes with the stick holder, ground clamp, and even the power adapter. Usually, with these budget-friendly machines, you expect to have to run to the hardware store for a missing cable or adapter, but not here. I opened the box, plugged it in, and was ready to work in about five minutes. It’s a true "plug-and-play" setup. Super easy to weld As for the performance—it’s surprisingly smooth. The arc is very stable and starts up effortlessly, which is a huge plus if you aren't a professional welder. I’ve tried it on a few different thicknesses of steel, and it handles them like a champ. It doesn't "stick" nearly as much as some of the older, heavier transformers I've used in the past. Portable and Versatile It’s also way lighter than I thought it would be. You can easily carry it around the garage or yard with one hand. The dual voltage (110V/220V) is a lifesaver too; I can run it off my standard wall outlet for smaller fixes, but I have the option for more power if I need it. I’ve spent 30+ years in IT, so I know a "magic box" when I see one. This HONE Stick Welder actually lives up to the hype for light steel work, provided you understand the hardware you're actually getting. The Good: Performance & Portability Perfect for Beginners: If you're just starting out or need a portable unit for a home shop, this is it. It’s incredibly lightweight and easy to carry around—perfect for my 12'x24' shed project where floor space is at a premium. Stable Arc: For a budget 110V machine, the arc is surprisingly stable and it handles light steel exactly as described. The "Starter Kit" Value: Usually, the included accessories with these units are junk, but I was genuinely impressed here. It comes with really nice gloves, a substantial chipping hammer/brush, and a generous amount of sticks to get you burning rod immediately. The "IT/Math" Reality Check The digital display claims 205A. If you do the math on a standard 110V circuit, you know that’s... optimistic. In real-world use, you’re looking at more like 130-140A of actual "oomph." However, for 1/8" rods and DIY repairs, that is plenty. THE BIG WARNING: The Mask Please, do yourself a favor and invest in a decent welding mask. The one included in this kit is, frankly, not even worth attempting to use. It is very substandard and potentially dangerous if you're relying on it for real eye protection. Budget for a proper auto-darkening hood separately. Bottom Line: The HONE welder itself is a fantastic value—it's affordable, portable, and welds very well. Just treat the included mask as "packaging material" and you'll be very happy with this purchase.

This welder sets up quickly, as most do, in this case merely plugging in to a 110VAC socket, connecting the clamp to the work, putting on eye and body protection, and turning it on. When a welder uses 110 volts only, it commonly has some difficulty delivering enough amperage to make heavy duty welds. This HONE stick welder does a very good job with that limitation. Meanwhile, the user needs to stay within some limitations as well. A key question for a small welder on a 20 amp, 110 volt circuit is, will the welding device trip a circuit breaker if one draws a long bead? If it will trip the breaker, then in general the welder is fairly strong, drawing all that it can from its limited voltage (not having a 220V option). But the user needs to weld for a few moments and then stop to cool the circuit, or periodically reset the circuit breaker. This stick welder is of that somewhat stronger type. First, I welded some heavy bolts using the rods included in the kit, which were unmarked but seem to be 3/32" diameter of the E6013 type. I followed up with 1/8" rod of the same type. These made a characteristically surface looking weld, but it was quite strong. (For this job, don't look for a lovely bead, since this is an odd-ball sort of weld). With a low voltage welder, the next question is how it generally handles thicker, 1/8" rod of various types. Weaker welders don't go over 3/16" rod well. So, I tried E7018, and it penetrated quite deeply and performed smoothly. Finally, I tried E6011, and it also penetrated very well and performed smoothly. With all of these 1/8" rods, the arc was easy to start, guide, and sustain. For this class of welder, this HONE is a good one, able to easily use a variety of the thicker 1/8" rods and create relatively large, strong welds. I really liked that there was little tendency for the rods to stick to the work, and little difficulty in starting an arc with any of the rods. Of course, for lighter work, one can turn down the amperage. The set of accessories that come with this welder is very good. Gloves, a slag chipping hammer, a steel brush, welding rods, and a welding mask of sorts. The welding mask is good if one has nothing else, but it would no doubt soon be replaced by a better mask. Also, its lens is plastic, and on mine that was cracked, but I won't be using it anyway. It is a start-up convenience included in the package. One thing that is not great, but can be dealt with, is that the display shows 205 amps at its highest setting, and it is more likely that the output at that point is around 140 amps. I think that subtracting about 30% from the number that is shown on the display gets one pretty close to the amperage that actually goes through the electrodes. Very much on the positive side, though, is that this little electrical box can do a good welding job with up to 1/8" electrodes. Since I used a wall plug and the 20-amp breaker would trip with continuous use of around 1/2 minute on higher settings, I am not sure about the duty cycle if the welder is used more continuously on a higher amperage circuit. Bottom line, though, is that this welder works well for being of the 110V class.
