We purchased this for our two cocker spaniels and it works great. It has been installed for a few weeks now and they use it regularly. We installed it in a metal exterior door that has a window. We had to get the large size so the top covers part of the window, but we don't normally open the window in this door anyways. The installation instructions are not great, but we are handy folks and did not have any problems with the install. Took the door off, marked the measurements, drilled holes in the four corners and used a jigzaw with a good metal blade to cut through the door. Had to cut both sides. One the hole was in place, the unit installed very quickly and easily. We had a power outlet right by the door, so we went with the AC plug that comes with the unit. I really like that the door allows for the plug to be connected on either side. The dog collars are small and don't seem to bother our dogs at all. The unit comes with one collar and we purchased a 2nd on Amazon also. One minor challenge we have is that if the collar spins at all, the sensor won't line up and the door may not open when the dog walks up to it. We are playing with the sensor adjustments now to see if there is an impact. It confuses the dog when the door won't open, but fortunately, since we have two and they are usually together. The other one will walk up or come back in from outside and open the door. The unit does not have an adjustment to specify how long the door should stay open once they walk through it. Since we have two dogs, this would be great. I didn't take any stars off for this though because we still really like how it works as-is. We haven't recognized how long the collar batteries last yet. They are specialty batteries and are not cheap, but we understand why... to keep the sensor small. We definitely recommend this unit. We had a hard time determining what size to purchase. Our dogs are fairly small. One weights just over 30 pounds, which was the max for the smaller unit. We did some testing with cardboard and determined that the larger unit would be best for our dogs, even though they are small. The size is great. They have plenty of room to run through the door and it is not too large. Sometimes they try to go through it together :-) . We did a lot of research on all the options available and from what we've reviewed and now what we've experiences... we are very confident that we made the right decision. ... show more

I bought this automatic dog door thinking it would be a convenient way for the dogs to let themselves in and out. I did not realize I was permanently altering their social class. The door senses their approach, opens automatically, and closes behind them. Apparently this small taste of luxury was all it took. My dogs are now, without question, the most high-class dogs in Abilene. Trips to the dog park have become increasingly embarrassing. They stand off to the side judging the other dogs who still scratch at doors like peasants or, heaven forbid, push their own faces through those filthy little vinyl flaps. You can practically see the disgust in their eyes. "You mean your door doesn't open for you?" They have also recently become aware that some dogs are expected to relieve themselves outside. On dirt. Common dirt. Like livestock. This has led to preliminary demands for private, climate-controlled indoor restroom facilities. I believe a bidet may have been mentioned. Negotiations are ongoing. As for the door itself, it works great. It opens when they're near, closes behind them, and has completely eliminated the need for me to act as their doorman. Unfortunately, it has also convinced them that having a doorman was beneath them in the first place. Five stars for the dog door. One star for what it has done to my dogs' character. ... show more

    • In short, this is an excellent pet door
In short, this is an excellent pet door. Go buy it. Pros: In contrast to “flap” style doors, which I have used before, there is no gap between the actual door and the frame. By design the door is completely sealed, which is great in colder weather. Wind does not keep the door from locking. Again, by design, on a windy day “flap” style doors may not lock, because the wind keeps the door open. This will not happen with this door. The ability to set different sensitivities for inside and outside is great. In my case there are stairs right outside the door and my dog is approaching the door from a different angle than on the inside. No problem with this door. I personally have no use (so far) for setting the door to deny entrance or in only. After all, I got it because I want my dog to be able to get in and out whenever he wants to. But having this option might be great for some people and it works flawlessly on this door. AC power. No more guess work when the battery has to be changed, not having charged ones at hand and the pet getting stuck outside because the power is too low to open the door. My 80lb Mastiff mix actually destroyed two “flap” style electronic doors, because the batteries where getting low and the door did not open. Cons: The key fop is very flimsy. It has not happened to me yet, but I can understand other reviewers complaining about how easy the key falls apart. I solved it by wrapping a rubber band around the key a few times. Electrical or Duct Tape might help too, but make sure you don’t cover the “speaker” Almost proprietary batteries. You will have to buy batteries for the key from the manufacturer. No going out to the store and get them quickly. My advice is to get some when you buy the door. Installing the door is a little tricky. Like the manual says, you might have to loosen the screws a little bit after installing when the door does not close all the way. It’s because of the pressure of the frame against the door. Price. Almost $400 is pricey. The door is very good, but that much? In summary, it took me about 45 minutes to install the door. That includes taking the door of the hinges, cutting the hole, “fine tuning” the hole to make the frame fit, putting the door back on the hinges and installing the pet door. That is actually pretty good considering I’m not in the handy man business. I’m very happy with the door so far. The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the high price and the low quality key. If you can afford it, it is definitely worth buying. ... show more

Update: the replaced power adapter seems to have fixed the door from lowering on my dogs. Also, regarding the weather proof aspect of the door, we have experienced one issue where the door would not open when/after it poured rain outside. I had to dry out the sensor and then it was fine. No issues since but something to be aware of with this product. Pros: So far, love the door. Our dogs already knew how to use a pet door, so training wasn’t tough. It is not super noisy and only scared our anxious dog for a little bit and she got used to it. The other one loves the door for some reason. One of our dogs has trouble holding her bladder all night and we just moved into a new home, so we wanted and option that would allow them to use a pet door while not compromising security in our home. So far, the dogs have had no issues. One thing I like is the door doesn’t seem to remain open if the dog remains next to it for a period of time. Door was very easy to install in our steel/glass door. My husband has some doubts about not using a professional but was not difficult when using a decent jigsaw and a metal rated blade. We have the larger size door for dogs up to 100 lbs, so the top part does occlude the glass a bit. Not that big of a deal, and not the vendor’s issue. The range adjuster on the door for inside and out is pretty nifty. Meh feedback: We ended up buying M5 collars separately because of the waterproof aspect. We kept the M4 as a backup because of the poor reviews folks had to say about the M4. Cons: We didn’t get screws or the power adapter with our order, so that wasn’t a plus. I do blame that on the shipping company though for manhandling they package. I am somewhat sure these two components fell out of the hole that was made in the cardboard during shipping. We have a power adapter that was rated for the same requirements, but the door says Low Battery. I had to purchase the company adapter from their page because you really can’t find one long enough outside of their company, and Amazon doesn’t seem to sell one with the same cord length. The door has ran into one of our two dogs using the door (not hard) two times, so I’m going to watch it and rerate after I receive the new adapter. If it still continues to run into the dog while she’s using the door, I will downgrade the rating and contact the seller. Hi Tech: if you ever read comments, one thing you really need to do is make the collar fobs fit normal collars. No one likes the crummy collars the fobs are sent with - they are junk. I had to use the zip tie approach to secure the fobs to the dogs waterproof existing collars. Also, I did know what I was getting into when buying the door with the cost total, but in all, we probably spent almost $800 for the door. Something to be mindful of if you want all of the bells and whistles. All in all, happy with the door. Time will tell - will revise if my review needs to change. ... show more

    • Worked fine for 16 months and then just stopped working.
I was very optimistic about this product after reading a few reviews from people who seemed to have no issues for years. Everything comes with wear and tear, and I reasoned that even if I have to replace the unit every 2-3 years, it’d be worth the $600 I put into it. I got the large unit for my 2 Yorkie Poos. I also got the wall tunnel and 2 pet collars. I was moving into a new-build and felt that this was money well spent. Even if it died on me after 3 years, I’d gladly pay that again for the convenience. Sadly, we only made it to month 16 when the door suddenly started going halfway down and back up continuously. There was no lead-up. One day it was fine, and the next day it would start its INCREDIBLY ANNOYING continuous up/down motion every time the dogs come near it. The only saving grace was that it still immediately went up when the dogs came close enough to walk through it, so they weren’t in any danger. It’s frustrating for everyone else because the door now effectively stays open until a human comes and pulls it down each time the dogs use it. This includes their 1 am and 5 am outings. I had become so dependent on this door that my immediate thought was to just replace it, even after just 16 months. I was hoping for a discount on a replacement and would have even given in and just paid full price if it wasn’t for their non-responsive customer service. They don’t seem to care what happens after you buy their product. I called to see what my options were and they didn’t pick up. I left a voicemail, which in my world means I am never going to hear from them again. If you don’t care enough to put people in a queue/set up a call-back, I don’t expect you to return a voicemail. I waited a few days and then sent a message via Amazon customer care. Their response was to call the customer service number. I messaged them back to say I already called. After that exchange, they called me back and I unfortunately missed the call because I was working. I called back and had to leave another message, so I guess I missed my one chance to talk to a human when I missed their call. I never heard from them after their 1 attempt to respond to the Amazon message. I then went online to see if others reported the same issue. I figured that maybe I was missing something and could find some tips on some online forums. That’s when I found the company’s troubleshooting guide. According to their troubleshooting “DIY” page, this happens often enough that it’s the first thing listed on the page. To follow their guidance, I have to order a replacement main wire harness ($30) and main circuit board ($80) from them, then unmount the unit from the wall, remove all the screws, and somehow replace those two items myself to get the unit operational again. I have never heard of a company encouraging you to take its product apart and try to replace its parts yourself. A $600 product. After 16 months…. Even with my reservations, I dutifully took the thing off the wall and took it apart to see what I was getting myself into. I figured that I could pretend to be an engineer to regain my sanity. I started looking for instructions on how to complete the replacements after the parts showed up. That’s when I found other posts saying that their doors didn’t work even after they replaced the parts. Not shocking because customers shouldn’t be asked to do this themselves anyway. Unless you are buying a build-it-yourself product, this makes no sense. Also, it looks like their limited lifetime warranty is not valid on replacement parts (i.e. Main Circuit Board, Motor, Dual Sensor Cable Assembly, etc.), so I stood the risk of being out even more money and still not having the door work. This is when I accepted defeat. So this was $600 down the drain. I took the unit off the wall and am replacing it with a plain non-powered flap. I am posting this so others are aware of what they are getting into with this purchase. ... show more

    • Well worth the money, love, love, love doggy dog!
Have used this electronic doggy door for over five years (4 years in CA and then moved to FL)! I love it! Make sure you buy back up batteries for the collar cause you never know when they will go dead and your pet won't be able to use the door (Been there on a Sunday and called multiple places looking for these batteries). Also be advised that if you purchase through Amazon, you only have a 90 day warranty, whereas if you buy from manufacturer you receive a one year warranty. I recently moved (to FL) and had to purchase a new door and bought through Amazon (expensive but well worth it!). First door stopped working within two weeks. Amazon did send a new door and told me to use the box to return the damaged one. The second door's indoor sensor broke 5 1/2 months later (never had problems like this before). Found out the hard way that Amazon would not do anything, they only cover the product for 90 days max. Luckly I went to the manufactures website on a Tuesday and it was 20% off day, so I got a much better deal and the shipping was fast. No worries about other animals getting in as the door will only open with the battery on your dogs collar. We have raccoons and possums as well as armadillo's and stray cats. Didn't want to ever wake up to another animal in my house!! I highly recommend this doggy door, I know it is expensive, but the first one I brought over 5 years ago is still working great in the home I sold in CA. I am hoping this one will last just as long, if not longer. So much easier to housebreak your dog when they can use the door at anytime. You do have the ability to turn it off (which I do when I leave my house for a couple hours just to make sure they don't go out a start a "barking party")! LOL ... show more

    • Totally worth it!
It took me a long time to find an automatic door that would fit both my large dobermans. One is 75lbs and the other is 85lbs. After a long search, I came across this door. Of course I read the comments and got concerns... but as of about a month with it installed, I and my dogs love it. It took me about a month to get it installed. Both my dad and husband weren't sure if they could get it aligned perfectly so we hired a carpenter to install it. Once it was installed it took my dogs some time to figure it out, I'd say maybe a week or two. Now they go through it all the time with ease. I did have to order another collar since this door only comes with one but I had already figured as much. They came with a wimpy little "collar" so I took the opener off of that collar and was able to use elastic to put the opener on my dogs' nice collars. (I'm not sure why people complained about that) So far tho, I'm happy with my purchase. We have it plugged in so we're not using batteries which is nice. I saw some were concerned about power and the door not opening without power (duh its not gonna work without power) and their dogs being stuck outside. Mine goes in to my garage first and so if we were to have a power outage my dogs are covered from elements. Insulation on it seems nice. I've put my hands all over and didn't feel inside or outside air coming in. The window part seems durable, my male doberman has been excited about using it and has bumped his head on it as it opens and it still opens great. All in all I'm really happy with my purchase. I get batteries wear down on the collars and that's not an issue for me. These were things I thought of when I got an automatic electronic door. ... show more

    • Couldn't do without this door!
We have had this door for about four years now and I don't know how we would get along without it. We have two dogs and two cats and I truly believe this door must go up and down at least 100 times a day. The first door quit working right at one year. When I called Hi Tech Pet they agreed to send me a new door since I was so close to the warranty period. Whew! Then that door worked for three years with no problems at all. A few days ago it would not go up and down. We immediately headed to Amazon to see if they carried it. They did and it was on prime! Hi Tech Pet said it was probably the motor, but since the door is used so many times a day my husband opted for a new door. Since the hole was already cut in the wall it was an easy fix to install this one. It fit exactly as the old one did. I ordered the door on Tuesday afternoon and it arrived by UPS on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., so we had the door from Amazon in less that 48 hours(but it was a long 48 hours for the human doormen!). I love this door. The pets are so used to it that they didn't understand when they couldn't get in or out without us opening the door for two days. I was not happy about that either. I love the fact that it locks down securely when it closes. I don't know how directional it really is because ours usually are just headed in or out, not hanging around the door. We keep it on max most of the time since the puppy tends to go through at breakneck speed. We are in a rural area and would probably see many different critters in the house if we used the magnetic flap type of door. This is stylish, secure and used to the max in our house.
