Definitely a reason these were cheaper. Parts had rust spots inside and around edges. Metal sides were semi hard to get into the plastic area, but finally got them in. Bolts were another story, the heads of each bolt are larger than the opening. You can't just hammer them how ever because the square underside must line up with the square receiver. Had to carefully line them up, hit them with a hammer while it straddles a 2x4, give it the needed lift. Then once the bolt head is started into the opening, use my own bolt and beat it downward into the opening. Doing this 24 times is extremely aggravating. I'm also going to redo how the long bolts get their nuts. I don't like how they have them suggested and another company same set up has the nuts flipped which makes more sense. I may even go get a locking nut, not sure yet. Haven't even put them on, but so far getting them built was very aggravating. ... show more

The j hooks come completely unassembled but we’re simple to assemble and install. We used a hammer and a wrench in total as our tools. You’ll need some strength but I could make up for strength with the hammer. When I put both on my car the J was at the wrong angle for both my kayaks to fit on the roof. I couldn’t move them any further apart. I am 5’5” and needed a 3 step ladder to be tall enough to get the kayak on the J! I also couldn’t turn the kayak onto its side without help. I ended up having to use one set of Js, and lay the other kayak flat to fit on the roof of my RAV4. I can put the one that’s flat up by myself with just stepping inside the open door. I considered turning the hooks so that the short parts were inside but there was no way I could lift the kayaks OVER the long part of the j. ... show more

Product appeared to have been an open box. Product coverings had rust dust in them. Parts had some rust dust inside of tubing. One piece appeared to have been touched up with paint.
