Just stayed in a hotel that did not offer a coffee maker. I bought this device so I could easily have my morning coffee without leaving the room. During my first couple of uses, I watched the device (and held it in the coffee cup) until it appeared to be hot. It worked well, but I didn't like standing there and holding the device while it warmed the water. I was using the disposable paper cups provided by the hotel so I wasn't comfortable leaving unattended. After a couple of uses, I decided to let the heater "do its thing" while I walked away. The paper cup held up wonderfully to the heater and I was able to allow the water to get even hotter (I love really hot coffee). I am very pleased with this purchase and plan on taking it on future vacations where a coffee maker is not available. I don't recommend taking on a cruise ship because they will likely confiscate such electric devices (to help prevent fires). ... show more

I often travel with a small coffee pot but wanted this for a quick stop, late arrival to hotel. Heated up really fast and enjoyed a nice instant hot chocolate in the room. Take note of the length of the heating element - it requires a taller cup than some. I used a metal coffee mug, the taller kind you might put in your drink holder in the car. It hooks to the rim of your cup so you have no worry in using it. It cooled off quickly and didn't get oxidized and gross looking like some do. I only warm up water with this heater not boil it. I use it to warm the water intended for a water pik. It takes about a minute to do that, but the amount I heat is a bit more than I actually need due to the length of the heater. The on/off switch is handy for my purposes but not critical. This is an improvement over the old type of immersion heater I used to use, as it's longer (I like to use a deep mug). It also has a switch on the cord, which I didn't think I needed but have found it really handy. It's great for having hot water in your room for tea or instant coffee when traveling. ... show more

Operating in Europe at 220 volts, this heater will bring 8 oz of water to a boil in a minute. But you must carefully fill your cup just above the "min" mark (and not over the "max" mark) or the part of the heater exposed to the air will glow bright orange - meltdown alert! Properly used, it heats water fast, and cools down quickly. I like that. Used without care, it could be a fire hazard. UPDATE: While I was using it in India to heat a cup of water, the heating element got too hot at the top and burned out. This immersion water heater works really well, plus it has an on and off switch which makes operation easy since you can easily submerge the heating coil and then turn on the heat. The alternative is to submerge the coil and then plug into the wall which can be awkward if there is no flat surface near the wall plug. It is small and easy to pack. Heats and cools off quickly. The downside is that I was taken in by the word "travel" and used this on a European plug. The device immediately turn bright orange and died. Only use when traveling in the USA. ... show more

Works nicely with any coffee or tea cup, but particularly a tall, straight sided mug. Setting the cords on/off switch on the table helps provide stability to keep the wand upright. I reached the boiling point I wanted at 6 minutes. It's definitely hot. You don't want to accidentally touch it when you turn it on. Follow the directions of waiting till it's in the water before turning on the switch. Such a Great purchase. I will purchase this for a gift and as a second one to travel with. 🌟 ... show more
